Commitment to DiversityBaker Hostetler has made a long-term commitment to incorporate diversity within our workforce and business strategies by recruiting, retaining and promoting women and minority attorneys at all levels.

Our progress is demonstrated by our continual growth within lawyer ranks. As of January 1, 2010, the Baker Hostetler partnership includes 5.6% minority lawyers and 19.9% women lawyers, while our associate ranks are com-prised of 16.9% lawyers of color and 50% women lawyers.

Our commitment to diversity is internal to our lawyers and external to our clients and our communities. Whether a new associate or an experienced attorney, all benefit from our prior efforts, existing activities and future initiatives.

Firm Receives Diversity Award from Eaton CorporationDiversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation recently honored Baker Hostetler for its strong commit-ment to diversity as part of the Eaton Law Department’s supplier recognition program. Eaton is a long-term client of the Firm and is served by several offices. Los Angeles Office Managing Partner John Cermak, who has done significant work for Eaton, submitted the successful application for this award. Baker Hostetler was one of only two firms chosen to receive Eaton’s Supplier Diversity Excellence Award from among a select group of firms. Baker was recognized at a special event in Cleve-land in September, 2010.

Baker Hostetler has been outstanding in working with Eaton towards its diversity goals, according to Mark M. McGuire, Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Eaton Corporation. “Additionally, they embody the spirit of diversity in the legal community,” McGuire added.

Diversity CommitteeIn 1994, the Firm instituted a Diversity Task Force, which has since evolved into a standing committee. The Diversity Committee includes members of the Policy Committee, Office Managing Partners, Partners and Associates. Exemplifying the goal of true diversity, the committee includes minorities, non-minorities, men and women, lawyers and staff members.

The Diversity Committee has regular conference calls and meetings to evaluate current initiatives and propose revised or new action items to be undertaken by the Firm. These action items are part of the continuing effort to improve the hiring, development and retention of minority and women attorneys.

In September 2010, the Diversity Committee organized the seventh Minority Attorney Conference. Minority attorneys across the Firm, as well as practice group and management leaders participated. Management roundtables provided an opportunity to discuss strategic growth; recruiting; compensation and promotion; and client development in small groups. Werten F.W. Bellamy, Jr., Founder and Organizer of the “Charting Your Own Course” Annual Conference facilitated discussions on becoming an indispensable attorney, establishing and maintaining client relationships, and confronting unconscious bias.

Women’s CommitteeRecognizing that women face distinctive challenges in the legal profession, in 2004 Baker Hostetler formed a separate Women’s Committee to provide recommendations to management to meet these challenges. Chair of the Committee is Lisa Pennington, Houston Office Managing Partner.

The Committee, which is comprised of attorneys from all our offices as well as representation from Human Resources and Marketing, is divided into five subcommittees: — Hiring/Retention — Social Inclusion— Work/Life Balance— Management/Leadership — Marketing

In addition to the firmwide initiatives addressed by the Women’s Committee, various offices have also organized business development and networking events for women attorneys and clients, as well as hosted or sponsored programs honoring the contributions and achievements of women within the local community, including:

— The Denver office hosted its fifth annual Reception in Honor of Women’s History Month in March 2010;

— The Cleveland, Houston and Orlando women attorneys have hosted networking receptions for clients and friends of the Firm;

— Multiple-year Firm sponsorship of the Corporate Counsel Women of Color’s Annual Career Strategies Conference;

— Cleveland office sponsorship of Diversity Seminars hosted by the Cleveland Bar Association.

RecruitingWe recognize that in order to serve the needs of our diverse client base, our lawyer population needs to be equally diverse. It is because of these differences that we can bring a variety of perspectives and experiences together and provide creative solutions for the challenges our clients face.

For over a decade, half of Baker Hostetler’s new hires were women and minorities. Our ability to diversify our workforce is the result of many factors, including targeted recruiting of minorities and women at law schools and through lateral lawyer interviews, the Paul D. White Scholarship program, active participation in minority job fairs, and the appointment of minority and women lawyers to our Hiring Committees.

Paul D. White Scholarship Program A Remarkable ManPaul D. White, Baker Hostetler’s first minority partner, was a fine lawyer and a remarkable man. Born in 1917, Mr. White overcame obstacles throughout his life through education and commitment to become a highly regarded lawyer and a widely respected leader. A Pioneer • First African-American judge elected in Cleveland • Director of Law, City of Cleveland • Trustee, Cleveland Bar Association and Legal Aid

Society • Permanent Delegate to The Judicial Conference of

the Eighth District of Ohio • Member, Ohio, American, National and Norman S.

Minor Bar Associations • Distinguished Service Award, NAACP, Cleveland

Branch

An Inspiration Paul D. White inspired his partners at Baker Hostetler to create an annual scholarship for law students of Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, Asian, American Indian or Alaska Native descent. The scholarship, named in his honor, includes a paid summer clerkship and a $7,500 cash award.

Although Mr. White passed away in 1997, his legacy lives on. Nearly $2 million in scholarships and clerkships for minority law students has been awarded in his name. Through The Paul D. White Scholarship, he continues to inspire young lawyers to believe in what they can become through education, commitment and leadership.

Working at Baker has been an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to go to Capitol Hill during my first week and have worked on significant projects that are relevant to current events. The work is substantively intriguing in an environment where everyone is open and welcoming.

Leah Watson of Harvard Law is First Recipient of Diversity Fellowship

Leah Watson, a Harvard Law School student and summer associate in Baker Hostetler’s Washington, D.C., office, is the first person to receive the Firm’s recently established Diversity Fellowship. Her academic performance and significant personal achievements, along with her strong community involvement, make Leah the ideal Diversity Fellowship recipient.

While at Harvard Law, where she is a candidate for her J.D. in 2011, Leah has served as Outreach Director of the Tenant Advocacy Project, Orientation Chair of the Black Law Students Association and External Vice-President of the Black Law Students Association. Prior to entering Harvard Law, she earned her B.A., magna cum laude, from Vanderbilt University, where she was active in the Andrew Jackson Boys and Girls Clubs, the Undergraduate Honor Council and the First Amendment Center.

Leah has always been interested in and involved with education and civil rights. She has worked with the Education Pioneers in Boston, the Breakthrough Pro-gram and Teach for America in Atlanta, and the Center for Investigative Reporting in Washington, D.C.

In addition to her academic, civic and professional accomplishments, Leah was a finalist for MTV’s “Miss Seventeen” and was voted runner up Miss Tennessee, U.S.A. If somehow she does find time to relax, she enjoys reading, films and travel.

Training, Retention and DevelopmentAttorneys succeed with training and personal and professional development opportunities. At Baker Hostetler, these opportunities begin early in an associate’s career and continue through a partner’s career.

Associate AcademyEvery first-year associate is invited to attend our Associate Academy within six months of joining the Firm. From business development and communication skills to due diligence and pre-trial preparation, the Associate Academy provides targeted training for our first-year attorneys, while giving them the opportunity to meet and network with peers from other offices.

Mid-Level TrainingDuring their third or fourth year, associates participate in a multi-day program. This advanced training focuses on the practice group and the industries it serves, to further develop the depth of knowledge and understanding associates have of the practice area they have chosen.

Mentoring ProgramThe mentoring program matches first-year and lateral associates with a mentor who assists with training and development. Associates are advised of their progress on a regular basis which ensures they have the feedback they need to move forward in their careers. Evaluations are coupled with face-to-face discussions regarding professional development.

4th-Year Coaching ProgramAll associates are assigned a senior-level partner as a coach during their fourth year. The coach acts as a role model for enhancing professional development by passing on knowledge, skills and values and providing advice and counsel in improving the associate’s legal skills. Additionally, the coach acts as a support person by helping to develop social contacts and community involvement during this year-long program.
