Location Western Michigan University, located in Kalamazoo,

Michigan, is just a 2 1/2 hour drive from Chicago or

Detroit and less than one hour from the scenic shores of

Lake Michigan. Kalamazoo is a safe and friendly city with a

population of almost 75,000. Travel is convenient to and from

the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (AZO).

transcripts (translated into English)

Official proof of English language proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, etc.)

Bank statement or scholarship letter that includes one year of

funding

Copy of your passport identification page

Acceptable English Tests

The following tests and scores are accepted at WMU as measures of English language proficiency. Request testing agency to submit official English language proficiency scores directly to WMU (some graduate programs do require a higher score, please check

program website).

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) A score of 61 iBT, 500 PBT for restricted admission*, or a score of 80 iBT, 550 PBT for unrestricted admission**. WMU’s institutional code is 1902.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) A score of 6.0 is required for restricted admission*, or a score of 6.5 for unrestricted admission**.

Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) A score of 69 for restricted admission*, or a score of 77 for unrestricted admission**.

Successful completion of ELS level 112.

International Baccalaureate (IB) A grade of 5 in English at the higher level is required for unrestricted admission**.

Pearson Test of English, Academic Module A score of 45 for restricted admission*, or a score of 53 for unrestricted admission**.

General Certificate of Education Advanced Level Pass in English A grade of A, B, or C in English from one of the five British-based examining boards is required for unrestricted admission**.

Center for English Language and Culture for International Students This is WMU’s intensive English program. With successful completion of the advanced level of CELCIS, and instructor recommendations, you can fulfill the English language requirement and begin academic study at WMU (www.wmich.edu/celcis). *Restricted admission: full-time academic program enrollment including a five credit undergraduate English course during the first term of enrollment. **Unrestricted admission: full-time academic enrollment starting with the first term of enrollment. NOTE: You should also contact your academic department of interest for further information and requirements.
