Introduction to DSC

• Dye Solar Cell (DSC) technology draws together two very important scientific concepts –nanotechnology and biomimicracy. Dyesol’s nanotechnology product is based on artificial photosynthesis, safe and plentiful raw materials.

• The DSC was conceived by its inventor Michael Graetzel as a solar cell with low embodied energy, manufactured using low temperatures and environmentally benign and plentiful raw materials. Thus the DSC will provide a solar cell which can be scaled up without the downside of increased Greenhouse gases during its manufacture.

• In 1995, the Australian government initiated and supported an industry led collaboration on DSC technology between Australian researchers and , Professor Michael Graetzel and the Swiss Federal Institute EPFL.

• Dyesol was formed in 2004 to commercialise the R&D

• DSC is 3rd generation solar technology, with products beginning to enter the market.

• Dyesol’s cllaboration with Korea is now in its 3rd year.

DSC Unique Characteristics

• Can be deposited onto a range of substrates

• Stable maximum power point in all light conditions

• Proven technology stability for 25 years and good temperature stability

• Range of natural colours and optional transparency

• Easy to produce with low skill labour force

• LCOEs (Levelised Cost of Energy) simulation showed that a typical DSC design in high volume manufacture, would have a LCOE of $US 10.6 cents per KWhr.

Why is DSC Better in Low light?

� Different principles of operation

� Silicon solar cells are solid-state devices - based on charge transport through minority carriers where bulk electron-hole recombination significantly increases at lower light intensities.

� DSC are a photoelectrochemical system, where charge transport occurs through majority carriers and with reduced recombination mainly at the TiO2/dye/electrolyte interface. Recombination processes at low light levels have a much lower negative impact on performance. In addition surface modification and ‘interface engineering’ of nanosized TiO2 can further selectively suppress recombination.

� Maximum power point voltage of DSC devices (and thus fill factor) is thus significantly more stable regardless of the angle of incidence and light intensity. Mpp is virtually independent of light level.
