In tune with today’s environmental and energy drivers Star Refrigeration and Starfrost have developed an environmentally conscious spiral freezer refrigeration solution, Glacier.

ProductGlacier is a complete refrigeration package plant integrating high quality, industrial components with a PLC control system to offer unrivalled performance, reliability and quality. Glacier can operate at either chill or freeze conditions

CompressorGlacier uses the Vilter single screw compressor which offers the following advantages:

› Balanced forces – Forces around the single rotor are balanced, enhancing bearing life when compared to twin screw technology.› Automatic capacity control – Variable capacity and compressor ration control, ensuring high part load efficiency all year around at changing condensing and evaporating temperature.

Aluminium CoilEvaporators used in ammonia systems have traditionally been made using galvanised carbon steel. Ammonia and aluminium are very compatible and have been used in ammonia heat exchangers for decades. The properties of Aluminium make it an ideal metal to use in ammonia refrigeration applications.

The main benefits of an aluminium evaporator are:› Weight - The low density of aluminium compared with zinc galvanised steel results in a much lighter evaporator.› Performance - The thermal conductivity of aluminium is 2 times higher than zinc galvanised steel and has a direct effect on heat transfer efficiency. This also results in faster and more effective defrosts.

Low Pressure ReceiverGlacier’s low charge, low pressure receiver (LPR) offers the following advantages over systems operating with pumped recirculation, gravity feed or DX technology:› Supplies sub-cooled liquid at high pressure which is then expanded at the evaporator inlet stimulating evaporation and improving heat transfer.› LPR system is critically charged and operates with an HP float ensuring only enough liquid is introduced to meet the maximum load requirements.› Does not require a liquid pump as the ammonia is driven by system pressure.› The LPR design ensures that the discharge pressure can be operated at lower conditions than that of conventional direct expansion and pump circulation systems.› The LPR system enables the evaporator coils to operate fully wetted and the vessel, liquid and suction lines sizes are smaller than on comparable systems.› Eliminates the need for a wasteful superheat zone within the evaporator ensuring closer approaches between the refrigerant evaporating temperature and outlet air temperature.

ControlsPlant control is fully integrated and optimised using floating discharge and floating suction pressure. A standard Mitsubishi PLC is programmed by Star Refrigeration to optimise the performance and efficiency of the Glacier’s components and ensure effective operation.

The individual components are factory assembled onto a compact steel baseframe which is easily located and connected on site. These packages come in 8 model sizes to compliment a number of spiral freezer/chiller sizes. An optional weatherproof plant housing is available to avoid the requirement for an internal plantroom.
