Rapid Market Uptake of Open Source BI
“Open source software represents the most significant all-encompassing and long-term trend that the software industry has seen since the early 1980s.”
“Open-source BI software is probably in your future; the real issue is not whether, but when.”
“Open Source BI is here to stay.”
“Interest in open-source BI technology is high as companies seek alternatives to higher-priced, commercially available products.”

Source Enterprise”
Pentaho and other open source
leaders are driving enterprise
open source adoption across
every major software category
Summary of Customer Challenges - EXAMPLE
NOTE: This is an example slide that should be used to open a meeting or conference call
with a summary of the customer’s issues. This gets everyone “on the same page”, lets
them know that we’re listening, and frames the “pain” that we may be able to address
Sales team dissatisfied with frequency and flexibility of current
reporting solution
Data only updated on a weekly basis
Can’t be used for operational reporting throughout the day
IT team has identified an upgrade of existing solution that may address
the business problem, BUT
Upgrade to existing system will take significant time
New licenses required for additional capabilities
Net/net – Solving the problem with current tools will be very expensive

Business Intelligence: Pentaho Open BI Suite
In Sachen Business Intelligence (BI) sind die Aktivitäten der Open-Source-Community eher
begrenzt.

Enterprise vs. Community Edition
Enterprise and Community Edition releases are NOT the same
Pentaho maintains a branch for each certified version providing ability to
Stabilize certified versions for customers
Professionally manage inclusion of community contributions
Deliver patch releases to customers
Provide hot fixes to customers for Severity 1 issues as required
Quality testing and certification is only performed on Enterprise Editions
Patch Releases (bug fix only distributions) do NOT get posted to open source
Enterprise Editions provide value added features for enterprise deployments
The Community Edition is not free considering Total Cost of Ownership

Is CE the right choice for my project?
The Community Edition may be right for you if:
You have the Product Management resources to evaluate 200 bug reports
and 600 check-ins a month and decide which changes are critical
You have the Development resources to manage 2.5M lines of code and
merge critical bug fixes from the trunk
You have the Change Management resources to build each Pentaho
application you use
You have the Quality Assurance resources to regression test your builds
You feel comfortable telling your manager or your board of director that you
are making critical business decisions based on untested software you
downloaded from the internet

tracking of critical metrics at
the individual, department, or
enterprise level
Rich, interactive, visual displays
so that business users can

need attention
Portal Integration to make it
easy to deliver relevant business
metrics to large numbers of
users, seamlessly integrated
into their application
Integrated alerting to
continuously monitor for
exceptions and notify users to
take action
19
Alerts
Pentaho provides you with the ability of delivering alerts in near real-time
to your dashboard. From your dashboard you can be notified about
activities in your business that you want to be made aware of in order to
make corrective actions. Alerts can also be categorized based on
predetermined settings and given a conditional icon to indicate the type of
alert. For example, the first alert we see is critical. It tells us that our
sales performance is below estimate. The second alert gives us a warning
that we have excessive inventory on hand, followed by an informational
alert letting us know that the trends of overtime requests are up. Beneath
the informational alert we see another critical alert telling us that
proprietary BI software is too expensive and lastly a good news alert that it
is time to subscribe to Pentaho. Keep in mind that any of these alerts can
be configured to drill into a more detailed view.
Scorecard Reporting
Stop lighting reports can provide your
executives , managers, and front line workers
with a method of reporting that indicates if
the operational activities are in line with the
overall company’s vision and strategy. In this
example, users can toggle between a graphical
stoplight approach and be able to see the
numbers behind the colors. With Pentaho
Reporting you can deliver reports to both user
types; those who are visual or those who are
analytical.
20
What If Analysis
Knowing how your company performed in
the past is important…knowing how your
company will react to changing market
conditions is crucial. Using Pentaho
Business Intelligence, your users can
perform many “what-if” scenerios ranging
from the simple to very complex. Due to
the flexibility of Pentaho reporting, all
aspects of your company can be turned
into a variable allowing you to analyze
what affects changes in market conditions
have business.
Google Maps Integration
One of the powerful characteristics of
Pentaho Reporting is its extensibility.
The report to the left shows a Google
Maps mash up. Now you can see from a
geographical perspective exactly how
your organization is performing and have
the ability to drill to detailed Additional, I
can drill in to more detailed. In this
example I may want to see who the store
manager is so that I can contact him to
find out further information.
21
Stoplight Reporting
Stoplight alerting is a great tool to give
you a high level view of exactly how your
company is performing; even more
powerful, it gives you the ability to drill
further down into each area, giving you
access to detailed cause and effect
information.
Operational BI – Activity Monitoring
Operational Business Intelligence is all about the ability
for you to monitor your business’s activities. This
example of a business activity monitoring dashboard was
developed when Pentaho was enlisted to help a major
military branch track, in near real time, the status of
crucial vehicle performance metrics. Utilizing Pentaho
Data Integration, they were able to receive raw data
from the vehicle sensors, transform and load it into a
data store for near real-time performance monitoring.
On the bottom left of the screen, we can see the
vehicle diagnostics strip chart that allows us to view the
real-time trend of the vehicle performance. You also
have the opportunity to drill down to view the historical
trend information behind each gauge. As a side note,
this dashboard utilizes components from both Pentaho
Dial Widgets and third party flash charting objects.

Simple Guided Adhoc
One of the biggest barriers to a successful business
intelligence implementation is user adoption. FIND
SOURCE The reason why user adoption rates are
typically low for these implementations is that most
business intelligence vendors provide a tool that end
users have to learn how to use. The last thing that end
users want is just another tool that requires days of
training.
Pentaho Reporting offers unmatched flexibility in
developing business intelligence applications that have a
wide user adoption. Instead of users needing to learn a
new tool, they can easily access and navigate through
your company’s information assets just as easy as it is
for them to do their online banking or buy a book from
amazon.com. More than 80% of your business reporting
needs can be satisfied in this manner.

Pentaho AnalysisPentaho Analysis puts rich, analytic power in the hands of your
knowledge workers - helping them to operate with maximum
effectiveness by gaining the insights and understanding they need to
make optimal decisions. For example, if a report shows sales are
trending lower than expected, knowledge workers need to be able to
easily uncover the underlying issue by getting answers to questions
such as:
Is the problem with one product line, or certain regions?
What’s different about that combination versus other
combinations that don’t have problems?
Is there a related problem with sales headcount? Marketing
campaigns? Or something else?
Pentaho Analysis helps answer these kinds of business questions by:
Making it easy for knowledge workers to freely explore business
information by dragging, dropping, drilling into, and cross-tabulating
data
Providing speed-of-thought response times to complex analytical
queries
Offering advanced capabilities - such as integrated reporting,
metadata, or dashboards through integration with other products
in the Pentaho Open BI Suite
Web AdHoc Query
Pentaho Web-based Ad-hoc Reporting is a
report generation tool based on Web 2.0
technology (AJAX, DHTML) designed to help
typical business users easily generate ad-hoc
reports using the Pentaho BI platform. It
provides a user interface that helps the user
quickly identify and group the data of interest,
apply constraints to the data, and generate a
report. The resulting reports are viewable
through Ad-hoc Reporting's Preview feature, or
through a Pentaho-platform based web
application.
