DISTINGUISHED TEACHER AWARD

The Distinguished Teacher Award, given one only to an individual, recognises teaching at any or all

levels by a member of the faculty that has made a significant and lasting impression on students.

Previous recipients in the Faculty of Commerce have been:

1986: DE Kaplan (GSB)

2001 N Nattrass (Economics)

2006: J Burns (Economics)

2008: LC Smith (Economics)

The following member of the Faculty of Commerce has been chosen for this award in 2009:

Carla Jayne Fourie

Lecturer in the Education Development Unit

Carla Fourie started her teaching career at UCT in 2001. She teaches Financial Accounting andReporting I to first year students admitted to the Faculty of Commerce’s Academic Development

Program (ADP). ADP students are a diverse group in terms of language, race, religion, culture and

socio-economic backgrounds. They inevitably come from disadvantaged schooling backgrounds,

and are admitted to UCT on lower than required matric scores. The ADP affords such students

an opportunity to bridge past disadvantage to meet UCT’s challenges and strive for academic

excellence. It is within this context that Carla Fourie has met the teaching challenge; to identify and

create the appropriate environment in which a student’s potential can be unlocked and stimulated to

enhance academic and personal growth, as well as meeting the objectives of the curriculum. How

she manages to achieve this is borne out in this excerpt from her teaching manifesto:

I am constantly aware of the academic and socio-historic diversities of the students anduse ways to accommodate and affirm the students in the classroom. I am particularly sensitive to the multiple languages that are spoken by the students and the challenges thatthe second language students encounter when engaging with the complex theoretical concepts and principles introduced in Accounting. Through informal conversations before and after lectures, I make an effort to get to know students and some of the experiences that they bring to the classroom. This is important to ensure that new contentis presented in a context to which students can relate and that students are appropriatelyguided from the known to the unknown, building confidence to explore new content. Forexample, when discussing a corner cafeteria, it would be more appropriate in the contextI am working in to refer to the “spaza shop” as this concept would be embedded in the majority of students’ experiential frameworks or knowing… Where appropriate I involvestudents who understand a concept in English well to explain their understanding to peersin their first language e.g. Xhosa. The use of code switching is an effective tool to unlocka student’s understanding of a concept first in their own language and then work with thestudent to convert their understanding into the demands of English first language.

Carla Fourie has won high praise from her students and colleagues alike. Her colleague, Dr June Pym

writes:

Ms Fourie’s student’s results have been outstanding and often exceeding mainstream student results. This is astounding in that the majority of students in Ms Fourie’s Academic Development class enter the Faculty on special admissions criteria and therefore, lower matric scores. This is a considerable achievement and is testimony of MsFourie’s exceptional teaching skills.

This is what some of her students have said about her:

Our lecturer is so active and committed and tries by all means to make sure that students understandand are involved. She is on top of things and you can see that she knows what she is doing and thatgives you the assurance that everything is in good hands. She also knows each and everyone byname.Carla’s style is BRILLIANT. I believe we can all do well.Carla is articulate, knowledgeable and great at relaying her knowledge.Carla Fourie, an innovative, creative, and inspiring teacher.
