January 2009 Vol. 52 No. 01 COMMODORE’S COMMENTS I want to sincerely thank the members of the Milwaukee Boat Club for electing me as your new Commodore. The past two years, Pete Merryfield as Commodore and Bonnie Merryfield as Director of Membership have worked very hard in accomplishing a larger membership and interest in MBC. I know all of you join me in thanking them. I also want to thank Wayne Happel for his work as Senior Pilot the past two years and stepping up to become the Vice- Commodore, as well as Daryl Grubbs, who continues to do a great job as Webmaster and is also becoming Senior Pilot. Thanks also go to Dave Dorner for continuing as Purser and Jim Heyden for continuing as Director of Programs. I want to thank all members for exhibiting confidence in the future of MBC by renewing your membership as we start our 52 nd year as a club. The MBC General Planning Meeting is coming up on January 22, 2009 at 6:30 PM. Vice-Commodore Wayne Happel will direct the meeting as we make plans for 2009 activities. Please try to attend. With lower gas prices we should be able to do more cruises this summer. I hope some of you will volunteer to captain these events. I look forward to any input, suggestions, or ideas to maintain MBC’s reputation as Milwaukee’s best club for boaters. Hope to see you all at the MBC General Planning Meeting. USCG 406 MHz EPIRB REMINDER

The U.S. Coast Guard issued a press release reminding the maritime community that older Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) that broadcast analog signals on the 121.5 or 243 MHz frequencies will not be monitored by the COSPAS/SARSAT satellites as of 1 February 2009. Mariners should promptly replace the old EPIRBs with newer ones that transmit digital signals on the 406 MHz frequency. Thursday, January 22, 2009 MBC Planning Meeting for 2009

Harborside Yacht Center Clubhouse 6:30 P.M.

Come with ideas & calendars

(and your appetites – we’ll have pizza!) Those with last names beginning with A through S, please bring an appetizer. Those whose last names

begin with T through Z, please bring desserts.

Ideas for events and volunteers to captain events are needed for 2009. Start thinking about possibilities and bring contact information with you. Captains should be willing to organize the events or cruises by making plans, including reservations if necessary, and getting publicity to our Runabouter editor in a timely manner. For those unfamiliar with the planning process, Vice-Commodore Wayne Happel will distribute a tentative schedule based roughly on last year’s activities. Anyone may suggest an event or changes to an event held previously. Captains then volunteer to run the events. Be sure to bring the dates of events held by other boating groups, including boat shows, etc.

ADDITIONS/CHANGES/CORRECTIONS

TO THE MBC 2008 DIRECTORY

Please note the following change to the MBC Directory: Greg and Debbi Canak's pontoon is a "Sweetwater," not a "Seawater."

INTRODUCING…JIM & SALLY MERGENER

“Commodore’s Ball” 2008 was the perfect occasion to initiate Jim and Sally Mergener into Milwaukee Boat Club. This smiling and happy couple is well known to many of us. Sally grew up in West Milwaukee, and Jim was raised in South Milwaukee. The couple met when both were students at UW-Madison. Jim received two degrees in industrial psychology, while Sally graduated with degrees in social work and political science. Jim and Sally have been married for 39 years and now live in Germantown with their six-year-old Westie “Duffy,” whom Sally describes as an “escape artist.” The couple has two children. Matt (34) lives in Menomonee Falls and is an SSYC member and avid sailor. He works as an engineer for Milwaukee Electric Tool. Jim and Sally’s daughter Beth (31) lives in California with her husband Tom and their nineteen-month-old daughter Ellie. Beth is a civil engineer for the State of California’s Fish and Game Division which is similar to Wisconsin’s DNR. Her husband Tom is a computer engineer. Sally and Jim both retired in 2007. Sally worked as an adjudicator for the State of Wisconsin’s Unemployment Compensation Division, and Jim was an HR manager for MGIC.

Jim and Sally became interested in boating when they would make trips to Sally’s parents’ cottage in Door County. When Sally’s parents no longer boated, Jim and Sally decided to buy their own powerboat “Escape.” The couple’s fifth and current boat is a 34’ Cruiser named “5th Quarter II.” It is slipped in Sturgeon Bay at “Quarterdeck Marina” in B-25, which isn’t too far from the Mergeners’ cottage in Egg Harbor. When Jim attended UW, he played trumpet in the college’s marching band, and it is from the band’s well known “5th Quarter” performance that Jim and Sally’s boat gets its name. The Mergeners are members of SSYC and Waukesha Cruise Fleet. Jim is the new Commodore of LMYA (Lake Michigan Yachting Association), as well as continuing in his position as LMYA’s Rear Commodore for the Wisconsin Region. Retirement certainly hasn’t slowed this couple down with regard to activities. Jim is a past-president of “Friends of the Rep” (Milwaukee Repertory Theater) and remains active in the organization. Sally is in charge of the Rep’s “Intern Angels” program, which includes providing meals for approximately 24 Repertory interns. Sally enjoys knitting (especially for little granddaughter Ellie) and also serves as registrar of the West Bend “Daughters of the American Revolution,” the chapter her mother founded in 1952. Jim does woodcarving and is active in his church’s choir, heading the church’s music committee. The couple also enjoys traveling and camping in their trailer. This past September they camped with two other couples in Yellowstone Park and California’s Napa Valley. Jim and Sally are avid Badger football fans and even found time to take in a UW/Fresno football game. Their trailer and its car are currently being stored in California, and in March Jim and Sally will bring it back to Wisconsin via the “Southern Route.” Sally says they’ll continue to stay busy, and we certainly believe her! Jim and Sally learned of the MBC from their many boating friends. To this active and friendly couple, we, of the Milwaukee Boat Club, extend a heartfelt...Welcome Aboard!

INTRODUCING…GREG AND DEBBI CANAK

Greg and Debbi share their home with Kelly, a 25-year-old conure (smallest of the true parrots) and three dachshunds. Schnitzel (17) is a shorthaired miniature that prefers to “take life easy.” Sammy (3½) is a longhaired red, and Nicky (1) is a shiny-smooth miniature.

When asked how she became interested in boating, Debbi replied, “Bonnie! I grew up three blocks from Lake Michigan, and my dad was a fisherman!” Greg got into boating when he and Debbi began dating, and they would go out on her pontoon. Greg is now the Captain of their 20’ Sweetwater pontoon “C’ Tusi” (a combination of parts of their last names), and Debbi – “I hardly get to drive the boat anymore!” – is the First Mate. Because of their busy work schedules, Greg and Debbi treasure any free time they have to be together. Their two youngest dachshunds, Sammy and Nicky, are enrolled in agility classes, and Greg and Debbi have as much fun putting the dogs through their paces as the dogs do participating. Greg and Debbi enjoy traveling, and recent trips have included Sandals Resorts in St. Lucia, the Bahamas, and Jamaica. Debbi has traveled to Europe several times, Greg’s been to France on business, and the two are anxious to travel there together. They also like spending time in northern Wisconsin. They own a 40-acre plot of land with 1200 feet of water frontage on Gile Flowage in Pence (outside of Hurley) where they enjoy hiking, biking, and ATV-ing. Greg is an auto-racing fan and Green Bay Packers fan. Debbi likes to exercise while walking the dogs, gardening, knitting, and decorating. Both enjoy the time they can spend together landscaping and working around the house. Finding time for family and friends is a top priority.

New members Greg and Debbi Canak added to the fun-filled and festive evening of the “Commodore’s Ball” by formally being initiated in Milwaukee Boat Club. Greg grew up in Wauwatosa and Debbi in South Milwaukee. The couple met when Greg’s cousins, who were also close friends of Debbi, decided Greg and Debbi would be perfect for one another and introduced them at a Christmas party at Debbi’s home. The cousins’ instincts were right on, and Greg and Debbi were married four years ago this past August. Their home is on Fowler’s Bay in Waterford, giving them easy boating access to the Fox River and Tichigan Lake. Greg graduated from Cardinal Stritch University with a degree in Business Management and is a supervisor at Wisconsin Precision Casting Corporation in East Troy. Debbi has an Art Therapy degree from Mount Mary University and received her Master’s degree in Management from Cardinal Stritch. She is Senior Therapist Supervisor at the State of Wisconsin Veteran’s Home in Union Grove.

Greg and Debbi learned of MBC through Greg’s sister and brother-in-law, Pete and Bonnie Merryfield, and have enjoyed spending time with many members over the years. To friendly and fun-loving Greg and Debbi, we, of the Milwaukee Boat Club, extend a hearty…Welcome Aboard!

Greg has two sons. Mark (27) lives in Chicago where he manages “Food For Thought” restaurant on Michigan Avenue. Andy (24) is an EMT and ambulance driver for Meda-Care. He and his wife Alyssa live in Milwaukee with their cat Graham. Debbi has two other stepchildren through her late husband. Stepson Mike (40) is an RN in Froedtert Hospital’s ER, and his wife Jennifer is a cardiac care unit RN. They have two children, Logan (6) and Molly (4). Debbi’s stepdaughter Beth (36) works in an urologist’s office.
