Have you ever wondered what the meaning is of the various types of robes and hoods worn by participants in a commencement ceremony? The history of academic dress reaches far back into the early days of the oldest universities. It appears that academic clothing was first introduced and worn at Cambridge and Oxford
Universities in England in the 13th Century. The European custom was carried to America, but prior to 1895, the institutions in this country did not follow any particular style of costume. In that year, an academic code of dress was adopted and the standards accepted by most of the colleges and universities in the United States. Today, the black robe, hood, and cap are generally worn.
