PROGRAM NOTES
Several longstanding campus traditions infuse the WPIspirit, two of which will be experienced during today’sCommencement ceremony.
Crossing Earle Bridge is one of the oldest. To visitors, the bridge is a lovely pathway connecting the east andwest sides of campus. To students, crossing the bridge signals the start and end of their undergraduate careers atWPI. Traditionally, they cross over as an entire class onlytwice during their four years—at Convocation, whenthey are welcomed as first year students, and atCommencement, as they process toward the Quadrangle.
Another involves stepping on the WPI Seal in the center of the Quad walkway. Throughout their fouryears, undergrads make a point of walking around theSeal, for folklore says that the student who steps directlyon the landmark won’t graduate on time. That this tradi-tion is upheld is most evident during the snowy wintermonths. After four years of avoidance (not to mentionfour years of hard work and intense studying), each graduating class walks directly over it as part of theCommencement ceremony (weather permitting).
Performers of the national anthem are seniors EmiliaMartini (conductor), Nicole Cahill, Dan Cianfrocco,Jason Climer, Nathan Climer, Greg Coffey, Maura Craig,Lesley Drohan, Erin Ingalls, Briana Lorenzo, KatMcKenna, Michelle Terry, and Eleanor Terry-Welsh; andgraduate students Jonathan Carelli, Shant Orchanian, and Erica Stults.
The Senior Class Gift is presented by gift committeechairs Paige Bourne, Matthew King, Chad Mondor,William Proia, Mary Schultz, John Upton, and SaraanVercillo. This year’s class chose to raise funds for a barbecue station, to be located near the patio behind theCampus Center. As a new social gathering space, this giftis meant to be a complementary addition to the Sportsand Recreation Center to further enhance student life. Itwill serve as an opportunity for current and future mem-bers of the WPI community to enjoy an atmospherewhere school spirit abounds.
Roseann S. Gammal ’10, who was selected as this year’sstudent speaker, is a chemistry and biochemistry doublemajor with a minor in writing and rhetoric. TheWestborough, Mass., native is the third generation in aWPI lineage that dates back to the Class of 1920, ofwhich her grandfather, Charles A. Gammal, was a member.
Throughout her undergraduate career, Roseann hasexcelled both inside and outside the classroom. Whilemaintaining a perfect 4.0 grade point average, she hascontributed to WPI campus life in numerous leadershiproles. She has served as president and vice president of theStudent Government Association and has represented thestudents on many faculty and Institute committees. As astudent representative on the faculty Committee onAcademic Policy, she was instrumental in establishing thecriteria for inclusion in the recently reinstated Dean’s Listto recognize academic excellence.
Roseann has enhanced the social and academic expe-riences of her peers by serving as a community advisor forfirst year students, working in WPI’s Writing Center as awriting tutor, and promoting mental health and wellnessas a member of the Student Support Network. She is alsoan avid Ballroom and Latin dancer and shared her passion for dance with WPI faculty and staff as a danceinstructor in the Employee Wellness Program. She helpeddevelop the first Great Problems Seminars for first yearstudents and devoted her IQP experience to creating thecontent and assignments for a new seminar on globalenvironmental issues.
Recognized as a student leader, Roseann was asked to be the student speaker this past August at the grandopening of the new George I. Alden Life Sciences andBioengineering Center at Goddard Hall. For her academicachievements and contributions to the WPI community, she has been recognized with numerous awards and honors, from the university and from national organizations.Among these awards is the Two Towers Prize, the mostprestigious undergraduate award given at WPI.
Roseann will be continuing her studies by pursuing a doctorate in pharmacy at Massachusetts College ofPharmacy and Health Sciences in Worcester.

ELKE A. RUNDENSTEINER
In a world driven by digital data, which flows across networksand through the air in ever growing volumes and at everincreasing speeds, the ability to intelligently store, process, andtransform bits into useful knowledge is vital. Wrangling vastamounts of data is the domain of database scientists, and amongtheir ranks, Elke Rundensteiner is widely regarded as aninnovator of unprecedented skill and insight.
Over the past two decades, Rundensteiner has developed aninternational reputation as one of the topresearchers in the field of database systems.Time and again, she has taken on some of themost challenging problems in the discipline, developing elegant solutions that otherresearchers build upon and repeatedly cite.
Early in her career, she established anoriginal and influential body of research on theuse and management of views, a central conceptin database design. She pioneered a newapproach to the difficult problems related todata independence, and she was the first toapply materialized views—which can vastlyincrease query processing time—to object-oriented databases. More recently, she has moved into thefrontier of managing and processing continuously streamingdata, work that is redefining the notion of data management.
Rundensteiner’s pioneering work has been supported by asteady stream of external awards from the National ScienceFoundation and other agencies, and from major technologycompanies, including Hewlett Packard and IBM. These honorshave included a Young Investigator Award from the NSF, theagency’s most prestigious award for young faculty members, andthe highly competitive HP Labs Innovation Research Award.
She has shared her results through more than 300 articles intop journals and presentations at the most important andcompetitive conferences. Rundensteiner and her students regularlydevelop new fundamental theories and, more importantly, theyreduce them to practice through highly anticipated softwaredemonstrations at top venues in the field. Her accomplishments
have been recognized with a string of honors, including the IBMCorporate Partnership Award, as well as WPI’s Sigma Xi SeniorFaculty Researcher Award and its Board of Trustees Award forOutstanding Creative Scholarship and Research.
Rundensteiner’s passion for research is equaled by herdedication to helping her students prepare for successful careersin academia and industry. She has advised more than 60 graduatestudents, including 13 PhD candidates at WPI alone. Described

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT
GORDON B. LANKTONDOCTOR OF ENGINEERING
Thomas Edison once observed that “opportunity is missed bymost people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”Gordon Lankton is not most people. A born leader, he has alwaysrecognized the great value of opportunities—and people—dressed inoveralls. He has never shrunk from anything that looked like work.
After graduating from Cornell with a BS in engineering,Lankton served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956.He was stationed in West Germany, working in militaryintelligence. When his service ended, he decidedto go home the long way—on motorcycle—through the Middle East and Southeast Asia, finally flying home from Japan. Living on justfive dollars a day, he sought not luxury but reallife. “I got to know the working people of theworld,” he said. “And I have followed thatdirection until this day.”
Throughout his career, Lanktondemonstrated his respect for working people bygiving them a voice—and a financial stake—inthe success of their workplace. In 1962, afterearly stints at DuPont and Stanley Works, hejoined the plastics manufacturer Nypro (thencalled Nylon Products) as general manager anda 50 percent partner. At that time, the company employed 40people and had sales of less than $1 million. When he bought theother half of Nypro from its founder seven years later, one of hisfirst acts as head of the company was to put in place a cash profit-sharing plan for employees.
Over the next 30 years, he transformed Nypro from aregional company to a global manufacturer with $1 billion insales and operations in 17 countries. He invested in newtechnologies, and was the first to bring robotics to the plasticsindustry. He was also convinced that growth was the best course, both for the bottom line and for the people who contributed toit. “I always felt that if you didn’t grow, you would lose your goodpeople,” he has said.
In 1998 Lankton went one step further, selling his stock inthe company to Nypro’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan,
creating one of the largest employee-owned companies in theUnited States. Later, the company extended ownership rights toits 10,000 foreign employees, as well.
A wise and wonderful friend to WPI, he was a trustee from1981 to 2005, and remains a trustee emeritus to this day.Throughout his career, Lankton has served Clinton, Mass.,Nypro’s hometown, as a member of the board of trustees for Clinton Hospital, as chairman of the Clinton Citizens
Council, as chairman of the Clinton Chamberof Commerce, and as president of the ClintonDevelopment Task Force. Twenty years ago, heestablished an award-winning robotics team, made up of Nypro employees and Clinton HighSchool students, that competes in annual eventssponsored by FIRST (For Inspiration andRecognition of Science and Technology).
Lankton has received many awards of hisown, including lifetime achievement awardsfrom the Society of the Plastics Industry, theSociety of Plastics Engineers, CornellUniversity, Plastics News magazine, and others. In 2001 he was named “New England MasterEntrepreneur of the Year” by Ernst & Young. In
2009 he was inducted into Industry Week magazine’sManufacturing Hall of Fame. He is a member of the NationalPlastics Hall of Fame, and a founder and former chairman of theNational Plastics Center and Museum.
Today Lankton devotes much of his time to another passioninspired by his travels. He is the founder of the Museum ofRussian Icons, which displays a collection of over 200 icons heacquired during 20 years of traveling to Russia on business.Located in Clinton, the museum houses the largest collection ofRussian artifacts in America, and has become a major touristdestination since it opened in 2006.
For his visionary and principled leadership, his generousspirit, and his splendid example of always treating others withdignity and respect, WPI is honored to confer upon Gordon B.Lankton the degree of Doctor of Engineering, Honoris Causa.

ANGELA M. BELCHERDOCTOR OF ENGINEERING
Angela Belcher has been called many things: nanotech pioneer,climate-change hero, genius. She has been named Researcher ofthe Year by Scientific American, one of the Top 40 Innovatorsunder 40 by Fortune magazine, and a Young Global Leader bythe World Economic Forum. Today, we are delighted to add onemore title to this impressive collection—honorary alumna of WPI.
A materials scientist with expertise in the fields ofbiomaterials, biomolecular materials, organic-inorganicinterfaces, and solid state chemistry, Belcherrecently welcomed President Barack Obama toher laboratory at MIT, where she and acolleague demonstrated their work on usinggenetically engineered viruses to produce self-assembling batteries and solar cells. Delightedand impressed, President Obama described thiskind of innovative research as intrinsic to theAmerican spirit, commenting on “the legacy ofdaring men and women who put their talentsand efforts into the pursuit of discovery…thoseintrepid few willing to take risks on an idea thatmight fail, but might also change the world.”
Belcher’s pursuit of discovery began in herhome state of Texas. She earned a BA in creativestudies and a PhD in chemistry from the University ofCalifornia, Santa Barbara. As a doctoral student, she realized thatabalone shells were strong and durable because they were madewith proteins using nanoscale structures. From this discovery, anidea took root: What if the organisms that build abalone shellshad access to other materials from the periodic table? Could theyuse those elements to make silicon materials and electronics?
Through a series of experiments involving DNAmanipulation, she was able to identify a process for evolving avirus quickly and exposing it to a wide variety of elements thatthe virus could use to make complex, novel materials. She createda compact viral battery that can power small devices such as alaser pointer. A truly green idea, such a battery produces almostno waste during manufacture and is largely biodegradable.
Today, nature continues to guide her as she develops novelhybrid organic-inorganic materials that can be used to make solar
cells, batteries, medical diagnostics, and basic single moleculeinteractions related to disease. She plans to work through theentire periodic table to synthesize a vast array of complexmaterials in an environmentally responsible way.
In addition to advancing research in the field, Belcher iseager to inspire new generations of young people to pursuescience. “Innovation and creativity are going to be the key tosolving a lot of the world’s major issues, like energy, healthcare,
and water,” she has said. “We need new ways ofthinking about these problems. That’s one of thereasons it’s so exciting to be a scientist orengineer right now in this country. These aresuch great challenges, and we’re not going tosolve them by going down the same road we’vebeen on before.”
Belcher was a faculty member at theUniversity of Texas, Austin, from 1999 to 2002,before joining MIT as the John ChipmanProfessor of Materials Science and Engineeringand Biological Engineering. In 2006 she wasappointed Germeshausen Professor of MaterialsScience and Engineering and BiologicalEngineering. Today, Belcher is head of the
Biomolecular Materials Group of the MIT Department ofMaterials Science and Engineering.
The author of more than 60 papers, Belcher holds some 20patents or patents pending. Among the many honors she hasreceived are the Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award; theMacArthur Fellowship Award, often referred to as a “MacArthurgenius grant”; the Four Star General Recognition Award from theUnited States Army; and Top 10 Brilliant Scientist by PopularScience. In 2003 she co-founded Cambrios Technologies tocommercialize biologically formed electronic materials. In 2007she founded Siluria Technologies to bring additional newproducts to market.
For her extraordinary contributions to science andengineering, and for taking a risk on an idea that could changethe world, WPI is honored to confer upon Angela M. Belcher thedegree of Doctor of Engineering, Honoris Causa.

JOHN E. BASSETTDOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS
When John Bassett contemplated life after Clark University, hewas certain about only one thing: he would never be president ofanother college. After all, he had spent more than four decadesin higher education, serving universities in the Midwest, South, and Northeast as a professor, department head, dean, and finally, president. What, he could reasonably ask, was there left to do?
The answer turned out to be, “Go west, young man.” InNovember 2009, Bassett was named the second president ofHeritage University in Toppenish, Wash.—3,000 miles and in many respects a world awayfrom Worcester and the university he has lovedand led with distinction for more than 10 years.
What changed his mind? An enduringcommitment, expressed in his own advice toClark’s graduating classes, “to make a difference,to make the world a better place for ourneighbors and for ourselves.”
In Bassett, Heritage has found anaccomplished and admired leader. During histenure at Clark, the university madetremendous strides in several key areas, including the academic quality of its students, the strength of its current faculty—more than half of whom werehired during the past decade—and its national visibility. Hehelped revitalize the Clark campus, which now boasts newacademic, arts, athletic, and residence facilities. And he securedthe university’s financial future through a successful capitalcampaign and a 58 percent growth in the endowment.
Bassett has been fond of noting that an unprecedented runof success by New England’s sports teams—including threeSuper Bowls, two World Series, and one NBA Championship—also happened to coincide with his arrival in the Bay State.
A champion of social and community justice in his ownright, Bassett has been deeply committed to Clark’s involvementin its urban environment and beyond. In addition to theuniversity’s $40 million partnership with its Main Southneighborhood, Clark has been a key participant in a citywideeducation reform effort and another local initiative that is
resulting in 80 new housing units, a new Boys and Girls Club, and a Clark athletic field. Bassett has also served on the boards ofmany cultural, educational, and community organizations inWorcester.
“John Bassett has not just been an incredible leader in highereducation; he has been a passionate and effective advocate for theCentral Massachusetts community at large,” said MassachusettsCongressman Jim McGovern. “His commitment to economic
development, social justice, and our youth willbe felt for generations to come.”
Bassett chairs the Board of the NationalAssociation of Independent Colleges andUniversities. He is on the board of Phi BetaKappa Fellows and the Council for HigherEducation Accreditation, and is a member ofthe Presidents’ Trust of the Association ofAmerican Colleges and Universities. Hepreviously served on a commission of theAmerican Council on Education.
A scholar and teacher of Americanliterature, Bassett has published 11 books, including Sherwood Anderson: An American
Career, and more than 30 professional articles. Before taking overthe helm of Clark University, he served as a faculty member atWayne State University from 1970 to 1984, as head of theEnglish Department at North Carolina State University for nineyears, and as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at CaseWestern University. He received his BA in history and MA inEnglish from Ohio Wesleyan University and his PhD from theUniversity of Rochester.
While Bassett has taken his esteemed place in the history ofClark University, today he also becomes a part of WPI history, as the Institute’s first recipient of an honorary Doctor of HumaneLetters degree. For his distinguished record of academicleadership and for the inspiring example he has set for all thosewho wish to make this world a better place, WPI is honored toconfer upon John E. Bassett the degree of Doctor of HumaneLetters, Honoris Causa.

CURTIS M. SCHILLINGDOCTOR OF SCIENCE
There are those who look at things the way they are, and askwhy? There are those who dream of things that never were, andask why not? There was one man who stared down an 86-year-oldcurse and asked, why not us?
On October 4, 2004, pitcher Curt Schilling issued thissimple call to a nation of Red Sox fans, kicking off anunforgettable postseason run that would rivetNew England for weeks. An ace throughout the2004 regular season, Schilling would lead theRed Sox to a historic comeback over theirfiercest rivals in the American LeagueChampionship Series, winning Game 6 with aninjured ankle and wearing the now famousblood-soaked sock. His win in Game 2 of theWorld Series would help bring Boston its firstchampionship since 1918. Life for Red SoxNation would never be the same again.
Schilling’s long road to Boston glory beganin Anchorage, where he was born on November11, 1966. He is one of only nine Alaskan-bornplayers in Major League Baseball history. Beforelaunching his professional baseball career, Schilling attendedYavapai Junior College in Prescott, Arizona, where he helped histeam advance to the 1985 Junior College World Series. In 1986he was drafted in the second round of the Major League Draft bythe Boston Red Sox—but his first stint with the Old TowneTeam would prove to be a short one.
Before pitching a single major league game for the Sox,Schilling was traded to the Baltimore Orioles, where he spentthree seasons before moving on to the Houston Astros and thento the Philadelphia Phillies, where he played from 1992 to 2000.In 2001 he won his first World Series with the ArizonaDiamondbacks. Finally, in 2004, he returned to the Red Sox,where he would win two more championships before hisretirement in 2009.
Known as a fearless workhorse throughout his career,Schilling pitched in 516 games, compiling a record of 216–146with a 3.46 ERA and 3,116 strikeouts, which ranks 15th-most inMLB history. He was named to six All-Star teams. He is the onlypitcher to compete in a World Series game in his 20s, 30s, and40s. He was named 2001 World Series MVP and 1993 National
League Championship Series MVP. Schilling retired with a careerpostseason record of 11–2, which is equivalent to an .846postseason winning percentage, a first among pitchers with atleast 10 decisions. He will be eligible for the Baseball Hall ofFame in 2013.
And while he no longer plays in Boston, Schilling keepsclose ties to the Commonwealth. He sits on theadvisory board for WPI’s Interactive Media andGame Development major program. In 2006 he founded 38 Studios, a video gamedevelopment and entertainment company basedin Maynard, Mass. Through Schilling’s annualMassachusetts Game Challenge, he encouragesyoung minds to redefine the industry bydeveloping new, innovative games. Since itsinception in 2008, WPI student teams haveplaced in the top three.
Schilling is committed to helping others, and he has demonstrated a fierce determinationto do so. He has received numerous honors andawards for his philanthropy, including the 2001
Roberto Clemente Award, presented to the player who bestcombines excellence on the field with devotion to communityservice. He was named The Sporting News #1 Good Guy of theYear in 2004 and 2002 Philanthropist of the Year by Worthmagazine. In 1996 he received Phi Delta Theta’s Lou GehrigAward, presented annually to the major leaguer who bestexemplifies the character of the Hall of Famer and fraternitymember.
Schilling continues to serve as an ardent supporter of carefor those who suffer from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.Through Curt’s Pitch for ALS, he has raised over $10 million to fight the disease. Schilling also supports his wife Shonda’scharity, The Shade Foundation of America, which is devoted toeradicating melanoma and promoting sun safety. Together, the Schillings are advocates for the Asperger’s Association of New England.
For his commitment to excellence, unwaveringdetermination in the face of challenge, and passion for helpingothers, WPI is honored to confer upon Curtis M. Schilling the degree of Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa.

COMMENCEMENT • MAY 15, 2010
Today’s Commencement exercises are a modern recreation of aceremony that dates back to the Middle Ages. The pageantry of theacademic procession and of the degree-granting ceremony, and thedignity and color of the academic gowns, are a reminder of the longtradition of the college.
Each degree recipient at WPI receives his or her diplomaindividually from the president. Those who have earned thedegree of doctor of philosophy, the highest academic degreeawarded by any university, also receive a hood symbolizing his orher achievement, presented by the faculty member who hassponsored the candidate.
The academic costume––caps and gowns and hoods––worntoday is particularly striking, for Commencement is one of thefew occasions in the United States at which academic dress isworn. Until recently, students and faculty at English colleges anduniversities wore their gowns in class, in university dining halls, and at all official occasions.
Academic dress originated in medieval costume. At the timewhen universities first came into being, in the 12th century, everyone wore gowns (that is, long, full-flowing robes) to helpkeep warm in unheated buildings. There were, of course, considerable differences in elegance and style between theextremes of the social and economic scales, and in many cases theking decreed just who could wear what.
Over the gown would often be worn a cloak (usually with acowl or hood attached), just as we wear coats today. The origin ofthe cap is more obscure. The “mortarboard” cap usually worntoday seems to have been introduced at Oxford Universitysometime in or before the 17th century.
The gown soon fell out of fashion with the general public, but it remained a distinctive part of the scholars’ wardrobe, serving to set them apart from the rest of the community––hencethe perennial controversy between “town and gown.” Until after the Civil War, students at most U.S. universities wore capsand gowns daily while in residence. Designs varied until theywere standardized by the American Intercollegiate Commissionin 1894.
At that time it was decided that all robes would beblack––bachelors’ gowns to be made of worsted stuff withpointed sleeves, masters’ gowns of silk with long, closed sleeves, doctors’ gowns of silk with longer sleeves and faced with blackvelvet from hem to neck and back. They also carried three velvetbands around each sleeve about the elbow. Hoods were made ofthe same material as the gowns, the length varying with thedegree. The lining of the hood indicated the university by itscolors. The border of the hood indicated the academic disciplinein which the degree was earned, as listed below:

The annual graduation ceremony is an important milestone in the lives of our students and their families. The informationon these pages will help make sure this is an enjoyable and memorable event for everyone.
Processional and Recessional—The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. with the processional. Themarchers line up in front of Boynton Hall in the following order: honorary marshal, the colors, honorary marshalfor graduate students, candidates for graduate degrees, ceremo-nial marshal, candidates for undergraduate degrees, faculty members, and the stage party. The procession moves acrossEarle Bridge and follows the roadway past Alden Memorial and Sanford Riley Hall, then moves onto the Quadrangle.(Guests are asked not to block the progress of the processional. It is especially important to keep the center aisle clear somarchers may make their way to their seats.)
At the ceremony’s conclusion, the marchers, in reverseorder, move down the center aisle and proceed toward ReunionPlaza. Again, guests are asked not to interfere with their progress.
This year’s honorary marshal is Satya Shivkumar, profes-sor of mechanical engineering and winner of the 2010 Trustees’Award for Outstanding Teaching. The honorary marshal forgraduate students is Dalin Tang, professor of mathematical sci-ences and winner of the 2010 Trustees’ Award for OutstandingResearch and Creative Scholarhip. The cere monial marshal isJohn A. Orr, provost and senior vice president. The baton car-ried by the honorary marshal is the walking stick of JohnBoynton, a founder of WPI.
President Berkey wears the Presidential Medallion, with theWPI seal cast in silver and the names and years of service of all15 of WPI’s presidents engraved on small silver plates that formlinks in the chain. Provost Orr carries the Academic Mace, a 42-inch-tall staff made from fluted cherry wood topped with acircular silver pedestal on which sits, on edge, a large silvermedal that has the WPI seal on both sides. (The PresidentialMedallion and the Academic Mace were gifts to the university fromPresident Berkey and his wife, Catherine, in 2007.)

Following his graduation in 1910, Willard Hedlund taught civil engineering at WPI until 1913. He later served the city of Worcester as superintendent of public buildings. Hedlund’s original version of the
Alma Mater has seen a few changes over the years; these are the lyrics currently sung on the WPI campus.
A second stanza often follows:
As years roll on, and changes bring, To all things great and smallWe still will thee in rev’rance hold, We’ll greet thee, one and allIn accents which no one will doubt, In terms so strong and boldThe world will know thy worth to us Increases many fold
Then here’s to good old Worcester Tech, Come, fellows, join in our refrainWave high the colors crimson and gray, For good old Worcester Tech
