Introduction
• From the previous picture, we have already seen a use of a comma. Without commas in a sentence, the sentence could imply a different meaning.
• a punctuation mark (,) indicating a pause between parts of a sentence or separating items in a list.

USES OF COMMAS:
• To separate things in a list or series.
Example: Cat, Roger, Mike and Lucy went to the cinema last night.
• We also use commas between two or more adjectives that independently modify a noun.
Example: She is a brilliant, young woman.

Cont…
• Before conjunctions that link independent clauses.
Example: I'll take the blonde, and you can have the redhead.
• Use a comma after introductory words, like well, yes, no, why, etc., when they begin a sentence.
Example: Well, I don’t mind as long as you are back by 12:00 am

Cont…
• Commas can be used to separate dates.
Example: 1ST September, 2014
• We use a comma after an introductory prepositional phrase or adverb clause.
Example: Halfway through the game, John and Mary started arguing at the park.

Cont…
• We use commas to separate nonessential words or groups of words from the rest of a sentence.
Example: Mr. Jackson, the owner of the ranch, gave me a huge some of money.

What is wrong with this sentence?
• I’m not going to give up, however, I do sometimes
get discouraged.

What is comma splice?
• A comma splice is a sentence error caused by putting just a poor, weak comma between two complete sentences.
Example: We all like grammar , we all love this class
Correction: We like grammar .We all like this class.
