Georgia Devil Dog Detachment #952

Commandant's Report

We have 36 paid members, 24 of which are paid life members. We have contacted all five delinquent

members. One has renewed, one will renew, one will not renew and the other two are non-committal.

We have sworn in five new members and their transmittals will be forwarded by the end of this month

in accordance with the requirements that became effective this past quarter.

Our recruiting efforts this last quarter found us in the local paper, hosting a cruise-in and pitching a ez

up Booth at the legion cook out events and the local Sam's Club. We have returned to the tried and true

method of passing out our Detachment Business Cards to everyone who will take one.

Our detachment continues to focus on Wounded Warriors. We have joined the other Marine Corps

League Detachments in the Greater Atlanta area on the Marine Corps Coordinating Council of Greater

Atlanta chaired by BGen Shortal, USMC,Retired. I sit on the board as the webmaster of

WWW.AtlantaMarines.org and as a member of the wounded warrior committee chaired by Ernie

Prickett. WE have a need to identified any wounded warriors in our area, in particular those who are

home after service and have or are hoping to assimilate into life after service. It is these Marines we

would like to connect with and continue the bonds and spirit de corps that we Marines pride ourselves

in.

We have organized a Marine Corps Veterans cruise for 16 November 2013. Everyone is invited,

Marines, families, friends, everyone and anyone. The criteria continues to be that you be Marine or you

are a friend of the corps and hope to someday understand us.

We have identified a few Marines from up north, Marine Poole brought a few hard chargers to a recent

mess night and our detachment hopes to raise enough funds to take these two wounded warriors and

their guests with us in November. We have enough for one state room and are working toward

another. If individuals or detachments; or the department would like to donate, PLEASE, PLEASE do.

We would like to have as many of our Department of Georgia Marines as possible join us and we would

love to be able to extend invitations to more than just a few wounded warrior families.

Our annual trip to DC is 3-7 July. We are invited, encouraging, border line begging other Marine Corps

League Marines to join us. Aside from being one of the best received "standing ovations" float in the

National Independence Day Parade. We also visit the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Marine

Barracks 8 th &I's Evening Parade, Micky Finn's MCL Detachment Quantico and the Globe and Laurel

restaurant. This is always a great trip.

Report on the 2012 TOYS FOR TOTS Project PFC George Eiland Detachment 1040, Marine Corps League, LaGrange, Georgia

The members for the PFC George Eiland Detachment 1040, Marine Corps League thank the many people and organizations in our area that have helped make our 2012 TOYS FOR TOTS Project a success through their donations. We also give both credit and thanks to all of the people involved in the Empty Stocking Funds of LaGrange and Hogansville, and the Salvation Army in LaGrange for allowing us to work with them in their service to the community by acting as distribution agencies for children in our area. The Georgia State Patrol again selected TOYS FOR TOTS as a statewide project. For the second year, Troopers from Post 2 of the Georgia State Patrol cooperated with our Detachment in staging local collections. We also thank Company L, 3 rd Battalion, 23 rd Marines, the United States Marine Corps Reserve unit in Montgomery, Alabama, for allowing our Detachment to work with them and be a part of the TOYS FOR TOTS program.

The very generous contributions this year exceeded our expectations. A total of 6,432 toys were received. The donations ranged from a couple of thousand "stocking stuffers" through a wide range of gifts including bicycles that should excite any child at Christmas. In addition, funds donated to our Detachment for the 2012 TOYS FOR TOTS Project totaled $9,037.07. Our support, combined with the United Way allocations to our United Way distribution agencies allowed them to serve 1,740 children from 696 families this year.

Several events helped to create the increase this year. Two locations cooperated with two groups of local bands to hold a "Tunes for TOTS" and "Rock for TOTS" event. The admission to these events was a toy or a $10.00 cover charge. Both of these events were well attended and the people who presented these events and those who attended expressed hope that they would be repeated in 2013. Troup High School Swim Team held a meet here in LaGrange in December and requested the donation for toy by each entrant. The swim club then donated the entry fees to our Detachment for TOYS FOR TOTS.

This year, our Detachment was invited to make TOYS FOR TOTS a part of the annual LaGrange Christmas Parade. In addition to the parade entry fee, the donation of a toy was required. We then accepted the donation of toys from the people along the parade route. Since this was only the second time we have accepted toys during this parade, and the other time was several years ago, we only received 52 toys this year.

Below is a Summary of our 2012 TOYS FOR TOTS activities:

Distribution Agency TOYS FUNDS CHILDREN FAMILIES

LaGrange Empty Stocking Fund 1,931 $3,000.00 602 243

Hogansville Empty Stocking Fund 1,444 $ 600.00 110 50

Salvation Army (LaGrange) 3,057 $5,437.07 1,740 696

TOTALS 6,432 $9,037.07 2,452 989

Goals and Opportunities:

1. Continue to encourage early donations. 2,955 toys (46%) came in after the initial collection and distribution for the December 17, 2012 distribution by the two Empty Stocking Funds. We must educate our contributors to the need to allow time for the distributors to sort for delivery. 2. Promote the idea of parents or grandparent to teach children the joy of giving by allowing them to purchase a toy to bring to the LaGrange Christmas Parade and to donate there. 3. Work with the bands to hold TOYS FOR TOTS events. 4. Encourage more clubs and organizations to give to TOYS FOR TOTS as an alternative to a Christmas gift exchange. 5. Develop a contingency plan, so that should a large number of late donations be made, we can know if other TOYS FOR TOTS programs are in short supply. A call could then be made to allow them to come and pick up any late excess. This year, the local Salvation Army served families up until Christmas Eve and provides some last minute toys to Salvation Army units in the Atlanta area.

1. YOUR DETACHMENT STRENGTH. 13 Life Members 76 Regular Members 19 Associate Members 108 total with 12 currently unpaid

2. INCREASE OR DECREASE FROM THE COMMANDANTS COUNCIL OF 2012. Increase of 17 from last year's total of 91.

4. PROGRAM FOR RECRUITING OR RETENTION. We publish member's names with memberships coming due in the monthly newsletter. Initial contact for retention is by paymaster then the Commandant contacts the member to determine "why they are not going to remain a member."

5. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, ARE YOU IMPLEMENTING THE PROGRAM. The professional development lessons have been best delivered at the District and Department level. Individual review by existing or incumbent officers is less desirable or beneficial.
