The Berlin BlockadeAs the end of World War Two was approaching, Allied

leaders met at the Yalta Conference to discuss what to do with Germany after the war. The leaders agreed to divide Germany into four zones: American, British, French, and Soviet. The Soviet Union feared that Germany would become a strong nation and invade once again. To prevent this from happening, Stalin ordered that all German factories and industries be dismantled in an effort to keep Germany weak. Meanwhile, the U.S. pumped money into West Germany in an effort to demonstrate the benefits of capitalism over communism. This was obviously met with disapproval by Stalin and the Soviets. On June 24th, 1948, Stalin completely blockaded supplies and traffic going to and from West Berlin in an effort to force the Western nations out of Berlin.

3) Why did the Soviet Union implement a blockade around West Berlin in 1948?

The Berlin AirliftTwo days after Stalin implemented his blockade around West Berlin, the U.S., Great Britain, and France began

flying supplies and dropping them into West Berlin. This collective effort became known as the Berlin Airlift. The Airlift required hundreds of airplanes to fly twenty-four hours a day, regardless of weather conditions. In less than one year, the nations of Western Europe had launched over 277,000 flights, delivering over 2.3 million tons of fuel, food, and medicine to West Berlin. On May 12th, 1949, the Soviet Union lifted the blockade. Afterwards, France, the U.S., and Britain combined their military zones and established the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany). The Soviets responded by establishing the German Democratic Republic (East Germany).

4) Identify and EXPLAIN the causes and effects of the Berlin Airlift below:CAUSES (1 or more) EFFECTS (1 or more)

The Berlin Wall is ErectedAs West Germany was rebuilt and rehabilitated, East Germans began to escape their zone and flee to the West.

Each year, thousands of East Germans, especially skilled workers, doctors, and scientists, migrated in attempt to make a better life for themselves. In 1961, East German troops began to build a giant wall to prevent East Germans from escaping. The Berlin Wall would ultimately stand from 1961 to 1989.They were jobs that required a high degree of education but under Directions: As you view the slideshow, complete the accompanying table below.
