    Acknowledgement

I would like to express sincere thanks to the Caribbean Examination Council for giving

me the opportunity to develop my skills in communicating, in both writing and in

speech. I am now able to communicate with a better understanding as I am

academically aware of my speech and actions. I would also like to thank my

communication studies teacher for guiding me in completing this task successfully.

Thanks to my friends who assisted me with a computer so that I was able to type my

work. Most of all thanks to God who gave me understanding; as without understanding I

would not be able to comprehend.

    General Introduction

Decades after decades the use of drugs has been drastically increasing. As it is

continuously used in various ways, there are numerous ways in which it affects society. I

have been observant of the ways it influence society therefore I have been motivated to

know more about how it affects people therefore I would be able to help people who

has drug related problems. Therefore the theme is drugs.

I take great interest in continuing my studies in the field of law; there are many

social factors which call for a lawyers intervention. A lawyer should understand the

reasons for social behaviors which will be an asset in helping him/her to work

confidently and effectively on cases. I believe it relates to me since it will help me to

have a better understanding of behavioral patters andpossible reasons for them.

The expository piece contains a detailed research of the theme drugs. It contains

factual information to provide the research with knowledge on the chosen topic. It

clearly highlights the push factors why people use drugs and how it affects their social

life. Which normally result in problems and conflicts, whether relational or societal.

The reflection brings the theme to life. It is a story which shows the reason for a person

to take interest in using drugs. It showed how it affected a persons social life. Which

was a negative outcome; and it also showed her process of recovery. The analysis

analyzed the refection. It clearly outlined attitudes to language and communicative

    behaviors, displayed throughout the story.

    Preface

This story is one which deals with drug abuse and how it affects people social life and

social behavior. It targets most teenagers as they are the one whom mostly take drug

use lightly, drug addicts and people who have the intention to start use drugs. Many

people take drug consumption lightly as they believe they have enough time to bounce

    back.

The purpose is to uplift their spirits, motivate and inspire them to realize that using

drugs is not the best solution to their problems. It is wise to attack the problem as if this

is not done it can lead to further destruction. Though disappointments may arise,

shadowing hopes and dreams drug abuse will only make it worse.

The context of the story vividly informs people of how drugs will destroy your mental

and social status. Drugs can lead to drastic changes within a persons life; as it can lead

to frequent feuds and disputes due to presence of violent and anti-social

behavior. Therefore it is considered very smart to abstain from drugs. The story also

involves different use of language and communicative behavior which is analyzed in the

    analysis.

    REFLECTION

Emilys innocenceHatred, disappointments were all that lingered in Emilys mind. Life was a battlefield.

Happiness, laughter, love and care were what she had no more. Home became a house.

Friends and family became the enemy. Depression and drugs were her best friends.

Emily was once known as the spirit of the home, mommys baby, and daddysprincess,

thats what she was. She was a beautiful Jamaican girl. Her hair was a black as ebony, as

it framed her small dark face. She had dark brown eyes, a small nose and her lips were

that of a cherry. She was a bulb, as she was exceptionally brilliant. She was annually

placed the most outstanding student in school.

However, one day after school it was raining torrentially and Emily wanted to go

home. She then saw one of her friends who decided to drive her home. After feeling

safe, Emily noticed that her friend had changed route. She asked, Weh yah guh? Her

friend began to get upset; he flashed an upsetting look at her. He responded, Nuh ask

mi nutn . His fury had built up as he and Emily began to fight, while he tried to sexually

molest her. He grabbed her body and fiercely ripped her clothes off. TEK YU DUTTY

HAN OFFA MI! RAAAAAPE! , screamed Emily. He responded, HEY GYAL, SHUT UP!

Being the weaker gender, Emily was defeated and raped.

The news spread like wild fire, when her family and school mates found out what

happened. She bowed her head in shame while her family supported her. Life at school

was like a cub away from a lioness. She was scorned and rejected by her school mates.

Her friends no longer associated with her. She shield away from all social activities.

As time grew, Emily met a friend name Brad. He was the only person whom she could

talk to. Over time, Emilythought she was in love with him. Emily buried her trust and

heart. Brad introduced Emily to drugs. Seeking a source of comfort, Emily got involved.

There she was feeling high as she hallucinated. She felt sexy and wanted by Brad, not

realizing that the relationship was mainly sexually oriented. It was too late when her

family realized the reality of Emilys life.

Emilys grades fell; she started stealing and demonstrated violent behavior. She

frequently got into fights and she spoke violently to her teachers. This resulted in her

being expelled from school. She no longer had any one to call her friend. Her home

became a house, as her family gave up on her. Drugs became her best friend. It was her

only friend as everyone kept there distance. She often remained silent while loneliness,

hurt and hatred filled her heart like a river over exceeding its banks.

It was only an aunt who shared a similar life story who decided to help her. She told

Emily she was taking her to a rehabilitation centre.Surprisingly, Emily finally spoke out.

A wah rang widunu ?Everybodi a gwan like mi mad!Excuse mi a wen since yu start

chat so bad! However Emilys aunt was determined to help Emily. Look ya Emily, mi a

guh help whether or not yu like it! She took a deep breath. I will be taking you to

rehab for the improvement of her health. Emilys aunt took her to the rehabilitation

centre and got her registered. When she first came there she looked at the people in

scorn. Days, weeks and months passed by, when Emily was in rehab; as she learned of

other peoples experiences, she felt as if she could relate to them. She realized that

there are people experiencing worse situations than her.

However, Emily had finally reached the time to go home. She was now drug free and

happy. Joy filled her heart like a cup running over. She got the opportunity to go to a

new school, meet new friends and most of all reunite with her family. Emily was grateful

for what her aunt had done to help her. She expressed her gratitude by hugging her and

Analysis of communicative behaviors and attitude to language.

Throughout the reflection the reader could be able to identify communicative behaviors

and attitude to language. These were dominant as they are various ways in which these

    were identified throughout the piece.

In the beginning of the story when Emilys friend was suppose to be taking Emily home

his first action was the changing of route. This change is a communicative behavior as

the driver is aware of the destination that Emily should be taken to. The change sent a

message of resentment. Emily asked of this change and he flashed an upsetting look at

her this allow the readers to realize that the driver is now aware that Emily is

suspecting him and he finds it uncomforting therefore he tries to shut her up. The look

he gave her allowed her to sense danger. He grabbed her body, this shows the

harassing action that has been carried out. It also shows the horrifying experience she

had with him grabbing on to her.

When Emily went back to school, everyone kept their distance these non-verbal actions

were very strong as it allowed her to feel rejected and neglected. This resulted in her

becoming insecure and she became uncomfortable in her own life. However while Emily

was at home her parents thought they were giving Emily personal space. However Emily

got the impression that they have abandoned her. She keeps quiet and things continue

    to get worse.

During reading the story the readers could see various attitudes to language. Emily

was afluent speaker of the English language. However when she was on drugs and her

aunt tried to speak to her she got very upset and started talking in the English Creole.

Her aunt was shocked as she did not expect this type of language from Emily. She saw it

as talking bad, she thought of it as a bad language to use. However she used the very

same Creole to talk to Emily. Emily started displaying violet behaviors as she began to

get in fights; and disrespects teachers. The schools attitude towards this type of

    behavior in non-tolerable.
