Take Action Club
The Take Action Club is, well,
taking action! A fund-raiser has
been hosted to raise clean water
in Ecuador, alongside a blanket
drive a toy drive to make the
world a better place. For their
service they were invited to WE-
day where you earn tickets for
your one local and one global
contribution. At WE-day people
talk about what is happening in
the world. Many celebrities like
Russel Wilson, Pete Carrol and
Sathya Nadella, the CEO of Mi-
crosoft came to inspire kids to do
more for their community. TAC is
trying to help people every single
day.
Congratulations Mega Watt, the first fourth grade boy team to win Battle of the Books. Battle of the books is a competition in which fourth and fifth graders form teams and read a certain set of twelve books. Then our
school librarian reads comprehension questions based on the books to the teams who compete against each other. Finally the team that has won over all the teams, gets to compete against other schools. Mega Watt, a team of three 4th graders from Mrs Carper’s class, Aaditya R., Nishant M. and Jar-ed L., has come in second in the whole district. What a huge honor!
“When Mega Watt won, I felt happy, strong, and like a better person. I would happily do the battle of the books again.”- Jared L. “ When I won B.O.B I felt full with joy, after all that we have been through and all the people who have helped us through the way and given us support. I am especially thankful towards my parents. YAY!” – Nishant M.

As the temperature in-
creses, the water’s tem-
perature rises because the
water molecules expand
and rise. This can be dan-
gerous because it can
flood villages and coastal
regions.
Also, in Antarctica the ice-
bergs are starting to melt
which is also causing the
water to rise.
A way to help this is to
stop using anything that
has high emissions (things
that use a lot of energy).
On April 5th the 5th graders at Rosa
Parks completed the egg drop!
Now I am going to tell you what
happened. We had to make a light
-weight container that can carry
an egg without cracking to the
ground! They worked to find a
working design. It took lots of col-
laboration, many trial and errors
but they followed through. Many
people were surprised to hear
that their egg didn’t crack!
WooHoo! Most eggs survived on
about 4/6 per class. People gath-
ered to watch Mrs. Bilanko and
Mrs. Bixby toss the eggs of the
ladder with the firefighter that
agreed to bring the fire truck! This
was an unforgettable experi-
ence.
The playgrounds in our community are
getting a new look! A variety of swings
are coming back to Cascara park, and the
playground is being upgraded too. We
will have two new playgrounds. One for
younger and another catered towards
older kids. The pea-patch is being re-
placed with gazebo and picnic benches.
It will make a perfect summer birthday
party venue. In addition, we might have
tennis, volleyball courts and possibly a
baseball diamond. All these changes will
probably be finished by 2017. Now it’s a
short wait.
On July 30th we are having the commu-
nity summer festival! They will have
bouncy houses, obstacle course, horse
shows, dance demos and new games this
year. Many other fun activities are being
put together and it is a great time to
catch up with friends. There will be
raffles, goodies and food at the festival!
We look forward to seeing you there!
Ms. Bixby is a 5th grade teacher. She went to a college to see what she liked the best in her
classes. She soon realized that she wanted to have a job where she helps people. Being a
teacher is a way to help people to be educated. She really enjoys building relationships with
kids and teachers while she is learning new things herself. Her favorite subject is math be-
cause math has a right and a wrong answer. Also, math builds on. Her least favorite subject is
science because it doesn’t have a huge background which means that you don’t know what’s
really going to happen. She prepares for her class by coming before school and after school to
read through the lessons she is going to teach. Ms. Bixby practices the lessons and tries to
find fun ways of doing it and teaching it at the same time. Since Wednesday is a short day
you might be wondering what the teachers do on that afternoon. They have meetings and
teachers also grade papers. The most important meeting she attended to is the meeting where
the people were talking about growth mindset. She learned how to have a growth mindset. On
leap days Ms. Bixby has full building meetings and on the meeting the people talk about dif-
ferent rules, drama exercises, and computer training. During summer break she wants to go to
New Zealand and Montana. She will sleep, travel, prepare for the school year and be a camp
counselor. This is Ms. Bixby’s very first year being a teacher. Her future plans are to teach 5th
grade most of the time and take one year teaching overseas. In her free time she likes to hike,
read, watch TV, go to church, and grade in coffee shops. Her advice to students is to give
your best effort and enjoy elementary school!!!
Q: How did you feel when you were appointed the Principal of Rosa Parks?
A: I was excited, really excited to meet the staff, families and students of Rosa Parks!
Q: If you were to take any other job, what would you choose?
A: I love being the Principal, but if I have to take another job, I would want to start
my own non-profit organization to teach kids how to make the world a better place
through service learning.

Meet Ms.Bixby!

Earth is round, But more than a pound!
It gives us air, That we can share!
Earth loves us It’s like a cuz!
Help it out, And we can shout!
Earth, earth, loves, Put on your gloves!
Take care of it, Take it every bit!
Pick up a tool, Act it all cool! Help earth out,
More than you can count!
Earth, earth, loves, Take off your gloves! You took care of it,
You took it every bit!
Earth Loves You
The leaves of my branches start to let go and wave a final good-bye.
Till they fall to the ground, waiting to be raked and thrown in the trash,
waiting and waiting only to die.
Branches are bare, waiting through the rain,
And feeling only pain.
The flakes of snow start to come on the ground and the branches without a
care.
Never seeing any bears at the moment. More or less because they went to
hibernate with all that hair.
The kids come out and grab some snow, trying their best to form a ball.
Then the kids throw the snow at each other, at least, until the mom calls.
Then the kids go in the house and “That tree with all that snow” waits for
Snowy and Paul to come back.
The tree next to me starts to blossom its flowers.
Getting jealous, for leaves haven’t come. Just wishing to have my leaves in a
snap!
Months have passed and for once, I have what I waited the winter for:
Leaves.
Finally getting the kids that were lost, have reappeared on branches with a
smile on my trunk.
My apples start as green as my leaves, but turn as red as little Red’s outfit
when harvest time comes.
Then the kids come out and pick an apple with a personality like them, leav-
ing the feeling of best.
The sun comes out, with its bearing heat,
Means the kids come out with a cool treat
Then, it starts to get colder,
Then, it repeats all over.

It was precisely 3:00 a: m and Kaafi was wide awake. He was sick of it, sick of everything he had endured. Kaafi felt underestimated and distraught it was so hard being a mustache! Enough was enough he decided. Kaafi wrenched and pulled with all his might until finally… he was free! Sure he had lost a couple of back hairs in the process, but it was all worth it. He checked himself out in the mirror, boy was he handsome. A streak of light jolted him from his fantasy, uh oh it was dawn! He had to get out of here before anyone noticed him, but how? Wait, the coal chute, he could use it as an escape route, perfect! Kaafi slipped out quietly. Oh, how beautiful the sunrise was! He had escaped, but what now? A brief memory occurred. HUH! That was it, he remembered walking past it, the fake mustache shop! He would rest there for a while, and gain some information on where and how to go next. He heard a yelp of surprise from the window, he knew that it was his previous master yelping to find his mustache gone. An hour later, he reached the small mustache shop. Perfect! Kaafi quickly settled in. A couple of days later, he decided he couldn’t stay here forever! What if he was sold, he had done so much to escape and it was all going to go down. The next day while he was leaving, he heard a small voice. “Pssst, follow me and no hassle required.” As Kaafi turned around, he saw it was a mustache just like him! They slowly walked down a deserted alleyway… To be continued…
