Mission Statement of GHS-MAG:To further unite the school as a community by highlighting the many talents, opportunities, activities, and achievements within the student body at Geneva Community High School; and, to provide a vehicle by which student voices can be heard by allowing any student to publish their thoughts and opinions.

About:The inspiration for GHS-MAG came from a group discussion at the November 2009 session of Geneva City Government (GCG, a program at GHS in which students learn about and participate in mock municipal government). The discussion group included GHS Principal Tom Rogers, select school board members, and a group of GCG student participants. The idea was developed after the concern was articulated that some sports and other curricular and extracurricular activities are sometimes under-recognized at GHS. Mr. Rogers stated that he has been aware of this issue and pointed out that it is mainly up to students to decide what receives recognition. Following some discussion, it was concluded that GHS students could launch a magazine to help represent and acknowledge the clubs, organizations, opportunities, activities, etc., within our school.

This idea brings us to where we are today. While printing a magazine would be too costly and charging a fee for the magazine might discourage readers, establishing an e-magazine seems a good choice. Living in a world of technology and, more importantly, living in Geneva, where almost everyone has access to a computer either at home, at school, or at the public library, we thought that the Internet was an appropriate choice for publishing and delivery of this magazine. The magazine utilizes the contemporary forms of communication which students at GHS use, and it seeks to integrate them into student life. Students have very busy lives, so posting the magazine online is a logical choice since students already spend a lot of time with online social media. In addition to a regular desktop version of the site, the magazine already offers a fully accessible iPhone® website. Various other mobile versions will hopefully be available in the near future as we continue to expand.

As this is an online magazine, there is an opportunity for expansion through the website and social media. Some collaboration for the magazine goes on through Facebook® while other collaboration can go on at school and elsewhere. In addition to social media, the magazine is always open to submissions by e-mail (e-mail submissions of content may be made to <[email protected]>). Every official member of staff receives their own free e-mail account on the site's domain. The magazine may also include polls, discussion boards, contests, etc., on the website.

Why Would You Join?In becoming a staff member of GHS-MAG, you embark on a great opportunity to get experience in writing, designing graphics, and editing and publishing a magazine. GHS-MAG provides an excellent chance to experience working in a joint collaboration of more than 40 students and various organizations school-wide. In becoming a part of the staff, you have lots of flexibility in your position and few (if any) meetings to attend.
