BAl MASQuEA HuGE SuCCESSThe Bal Masque was truly Harrisburg’s Mardi Gras on February 2 when over 250 revelers partied the night away at Appalachian Brewing Company on Cameron Street. Everyone agreed this was the best Bal in years... people continued dancing until midnight when Funk n’ Gumbo finally stopped playing, and even then, the guests stayed on at the bar and pool tables even while the tired committee was dismantling the lavish decorations! Above all, AAH is proud to report that over $20,000 was raised for its cultural programs! John Keck and Moira Brandt were selected, “King and Queen of Mardi Gras” by the attendees, using beads to vote.

What made this Bal so successful were a number of factors...The new venue was less “formal” than the Hilton and more appealing to a younger crowd; devotees of the now-defunct Red Hot Strawberry Ball attended because they love costume parties; tickets were sold online for the first time; WHTM’s tv spots were ubiquitous and fabulous; and we had a great committee!

Kudos to the Bal’s hard-working co-chairs, two of whom had been ill the week before the Bal but managed to be there nonetheless in true, “the show must go on” spirit! These three wonderful ladies – Julie Bancroft, Tracey Meloni and Bridgit Wiest – were absolutely intrepid and inspired the entire committee. Kathy Marley-Dunbar and her friends Terry Croteau and Donna Caskandon collected the best silent auction items ever, raising almost $7000 from sales and raffle... amazing! Eric and Sharon Ulsh certainly contributed to the high attendance with their MySpace presence and creative “guerilla marketing” efforts, and the exciting cover story in MODE, Lamar’s billboards, and the Susquehanna Style article all brought in new attendees this year.

Kelly Lick donated $5000 worth of extraordinary Mardi Gras decorations, and helped the committee to embellish the Brewery space the day of the Bal. Thanks to these elaborate props, including two life-size jesters, we can continue with the popular Mardi Gras theme for next year’s Bal, already scheduled for February 21 at ABC! Jodi Marciano, Special Events Manager for the Brewery, was a hard-working committee member and made coordinating logistics far easier for the co-chairs. Her authentic New Orleans menu was a huge hit.

The other committee members were Betty Fish Bryan of WHTM, Jeff Wiles, Brook Lauer, Julie Dlugolecki, Martha Brown, Robert Potter, David Morrison, Terrie Hosey and Carrie Wissler-Thomas. Our sponsors were Highmark, Aegis Security Insurance Co., Engle Business Systems, Fry Communications, Harrisburg DID, Lehman

Volvo, McKissick Associates PC, Nauman Smith Shissler & Hall, Pinnacle Health System, Reynolds Construction Management, WHTM, MODE, Lamar Advertising and Susquehanna Style. And special thanks to Beard Printing & Publishing for doing most of our printing at the last minute, and in-kind!

Thanks to all the program advertisers, the silent auction and raffle donors, and all the volunteers who helped to run the Bal... including our terrific emcee, Alicia Richards of WHTM. Harrisburg’s Mardi Gras is here to stay. Mark your calendars for February 21, 2009!

This will prepare you for the afternoon session where we will paint a local scene while adding in the figures of passers-by. You will need to work somewhat quickly as most people will not hang around long enough to get a detailed image down on your canvas. Some experience painting outdoors is helpful, but not required.

Class will meet at AAH and then move to the painting location. we will break for a half hour lunch before moving on to the afternoon session. Please bring enough canvas or boards to do several paintings with sizes no larger than 16x20” or smaller than 8x10”. Call the Art Association for a supply list.
