THE COMING OF THE LIGHT - Sunday 4 July 2021 Isaiah 58.8-11; Psalm 27; 2 Corinthians 4.5-6; John 12.35-47

St Paul gets right to the heart of the Christian experience when he writes to the Church at Corinth: it is God who illuminates our hearts so that we can have knowledge of God’s glory in the face of Jesus Christ.

Give thanks for the work and witness of the Diocese of North Queensland,

particularly in the Torres Strait.

Text: Robert McLean ABM’s Partnerships Coordinator © Anglican Board of Mission, 2021.

Cultural change is never universally welcome. There is always somebody who loses out. It's not always allergy to new ways or fear of the unknown.

Often it is because the change means loss of reputation through exposure of deliberate fraud and bogus claims to status. It is understandable that there are those who fear the light and are desperate to extinguish it. Frantically opposing reform, every kind of ruse is dredged up to patch and mend the old ways and de-rail, crash and crush the new. Thus, as throughout human history, this was the reception for The Light of the Gospel in the Torres Strait. As the Good News of Jesus was received by the Japanese, the Maori, the Chinese, the Innuit, Papuans and Koreans (to name but a few), the good news of forgiveness and peace was conflicted with the bad news of repentance and faith. Pretty much as it is in current Australian Society, where the renewing power of the message of Jesus is embalmed in the "I'm OK: you're OK" culture of death, where truth is relative and honesty is unattainable. Jesus said: "As long as day lasts we must carry out the work of the one who sent me; the night will soon be here when no one can work. As long as I am in the world I am the light of the world." John 9:4-5
