As has been reported in our Sunday services, the Building Committee has received bids from the General Contractors, they, along with the Finance Committee, are evaluating how best to move forward. That recommendation will be coming to us by mid – February. You have shown great patience and financial faithfulness as you have supported this project that will position us to reach even more people for Christ as we Build For The Future. Our fourteenth semester of FAITH strategy begins February 8. This has become foundational to our church growth and incorporated as an integral part of our church culture. Congratulations to the twenty three people who completed basic FAITH training last semester. January 31 is our FAITH “All On The Altar” service. I challenge you to let this become the semester you step out of your comfort zone and receive training to share Christ with anyone, anywhere, anytime God gives you the opportunity. February has a number of activities and church events. Note those in this mailing and participate. Remember the theme in January? Do Something! Making Your Life Count. Thank you for your faithful giving in 2009. While many churches struggled we were able, to finish strong both in regular giving and building Fund receipts. I am thankful for you and grateful to our Lord for all that is being accomplished in this place. Thankfully His, Bro. Our MissiOn stateMent

Being led of God, we are building a stronger New Testament fellowship of Spirit-filled believers with an ongoing ministry of evangelism, discipleship, missions, and worship that will reach eastern Hillsborough County and beyond.

Thankfully His,

Bro. Benny

Help kids love and value themselves as God’s own

Self-esteem takes a big hit as kids approach and enter adolescence. As their bodies change, young people are constantly bombarded with unattainable standards in the media. Cornell University’s Joan Brumberg says America has “a culture of kids who are being socialized to unrealistic images.” These impressionable kids constantly come up short when they compare themselves to society’s perceived ideals.

When self-esteem suffers, kids react in numerous ways. The worse kids feel about themselves, research shows, the more obsessed they become with buying stuff. Others turn to violence to try to fit in. One study found that girls are turning to alcohol to manage their low self-esteem and to repress anxieties and fears. Some kids behave provocatively or have plastic surgery to try to fit in and attain the world’s beauty standards.

When teenagers see themselves through the world’s eyes, they’ll fall short. Our job is to help them begin to see themselves through God’s eyes. He not only made each young person in his image but also has a plan for each of their lives.

David R. Smith at theSource4YM.com says an effective strategy for boosting self-esteem is providing service opportunities. “When we put young people in situations where they help others who are worse off than themselves, it is not only a great opportunity to show love and compassion to the needy, it provides these young people with a larger world view than the ‘plastic’ exterior they see in the media and the shallow world around them.

Many kids don’t like what they see in the mirror.

• 81% of 10-year-olds are afraid of getting fat, and 66% of girls ages 10 to 14 say they want to change some aspect of their appearance. (Dove Campaign for Real Beauty)

• High school girls tend to see themselves as 11 pounds over their ideal body weight, while boys perceive themselves as heavier than they are and want to be even bigger. (American Journal of Health Behavior)

“But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’” (1 Samuel 16:7)

David was an unlikely choice to be king. Of Jesse’s sons, David was the youngest and shortest. But God looked deeper and knew who he’d help David become. In his wisdom, God does the same thing for each of us.

Make sure you check out our web site www.firstbaptistdover.org/students to help your student get connected with our church through small groups and service projects.

Greetings First Family,Have you ever wondered how to please God? Many people think the Bible is full of “Thou shall not …” While there are plenty of those, the Bible also has plenty of thou shalls. Do you remember, “Love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.” In Matthew 22, Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 6 and followed it with “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” This section of Matthew is known as the great commandment. Jesus said the law and the prophets depend on those two commandments. If the essence of the scriptures is found in those two commandments it seems that would be a great place to start if we are trying to please God.Loving God and loving others is something you will be hearing more about in the coming months. Stay tuned; good things are happening at Dover.

In Christ, Bro. Chris

Dover stuDeNt miNistries

Over the past several weeks, Brother Benny has spoken about every member of our church finding a place of service. The last thing we want, when at last we stand before our Lord, is for Him to ask, “Why didn’t you use the gifts I gave you?” Everyone’s been given gifts and talents and we should desire to use those abilities to serve the Lord by serving our church.Music is one such gift. Every Sunday I see people sitting in the congregation who need to be up in the choir loft. Every week there are people sitting in the pews instead of playing their instruments on the platform. God gave you the gift…the music ministry gives you the opportunity to give it back to Him. And don’t you think He deserves that? If you’re interested in playing an instrument on Sunday mornings, let me know. (719-2273) If God’s telling you it’s time for you to join the Celebration choir, come to the worship center on Wednesday evenings at 7:30. And LET HIS PRAISE BE HEARD! In Christ,Bro. Ken

More blessings for the Hispanic Ministries!

The biggest blessing is to see people baptized.
