As our students will have finished school for Term 1 tomorrow and not be here in the lead up to Easter, we have celebrated our Easter Liturgies today. Throughout Lent, our classes have embraced the Project Compassion campaign, with creativity, enthusiasm and a little healthy competition between one another and year levels. In doing so, we trust that the spirit of Easter and Jesus' message of how we should lead just lives has been felt and acted out by our students. We hope that Jesus’ message is not forsaken at Easter time and that we respect our privileges of abundance, thus consider even small acts of living more simply, whether it is cutting down on the chocolate, and taking ourselves to church, or visiting a lonely person in one’s neighbourhood at this time. During Easter, the hospitals’ wards are much quieter yet the emergency rooms will call their demands. Service personnel will be stretched to the limit and their shift work continues whilst others enjoy family time. We hope that the spirit of giving to rather than merely giving up has been caught by our students and that they continue in a similair way throughout their holiday break. A way of sharing in community life arises at the end of the holidays with Anzac Day. Our student leaders, staff and all students of the Samaritan community are welcome to march on this commemorative day. Please see page 3 for further information. This week we distribute Issue #2 of our Q & A for the proposed new primary site. Please feed any further questions into our Info@ samaritan.catholic.edu.au. Last week we celebrated the opening of the Saint Francis Xavier Centre, with Bishop Greg O’Kelly SJ, blessing the classrooms and those who will use them; and Rowan Ramsey MP, officially opening the building and its new environs. Our music students – Emma, Joeulla, Crystal, Carla and Matt, supported by Miss Anttila and our Year 11 Catering class, Stacey, Sarah, Declan, Tayla, Jacob, Rylie, Haylee, Claire, Madeline, Chantelle, Adam, Teagan and Cameron led by Ms Hopkins and assisted by Mrs Faulds, provided wonderful hospitality for the evening. We wish to thank Bernie Meixner for organising the Liturgy and our leadership staff and teachers for supporting the evening. A special acknowledgement to Matt Thursby and Lawrie Boyle for creating our plaque presentation framework to make the opening special. Parish NewsLove means being ready to say “I’m sorry”

We are commonly afraid to say sorry and ask forgiveness, because we imagine that we will get into trouble. For instance, if I apologise that my child accidentally rode his new bike over your newly planted shrub, I will be admitting guilt and you will go ahead and sue me. In this, we adults are not all that different from our children, who get anxious that by owning up to some misdemeanour, they will somehow cause their parents to love them less.

Not just us, but even the church itself. The leaders of the church have learnt, and are still learning, that they have to meet those sinned against, and ask for forgiveness, and indicate how things have changed and will continue to change.

In the Season of lent, we as parishioners have scrutinised our hearts and minds, to uncover hidden faults and bad habits – owning up to sinful actions and lack of action, and hard-hearted thoughts and attitudes. We have listened to the special gospel readings of lent, discovering anew a God in whom we can trust. Even in disclosing our faults and brokenness, we can trustingly place ourselves in God’s arms.

Now we are ready to go to our heavenly Father and acknowledge our guilt, humbly asking for forgiveness for our sins. We can do this individually through talking with a priest, or we can assemble as the parish community, humbly acknowledging that even with all the gifts we have been given, we still get it wrong on a regular basis.

communal Reconciliation is on this Thursday, April 10 at St Teresa’s, and Tuesday, April 15 at our lady’s – just check the front of this newsletter.

come and join in the joy of the Sacrament, and bring the kids – why shouldn’t the whole family have a chance to grow in God’s love?

During Project compassion this year, one of the featured stories is that of Martina in the Solomon Islands. She has created a learning program for young children, utilising nursery rhymes to teach about natural disasters and what children should do in the event of one. Martina’s lessons would have come in handy when disaster struck the capital city of Honiara on Friday last week. Flash flooding, landslides and strong winds have taken 23 lives, made 90,000 residents homeless and caused extensive damage to the city. The photographs that show the wide spread devastation are unbelievable to look at. caritas Australia have worked extensively within the Solomon Islands for a number of years and have stated that they will support those who are affected by the floods so it is even more timely, that in this period of lent where we think about the true meaning of sacrifice, we donate to Project compassion.

Prayer for Natural DisastersAlmighty God,

Help us to understand what has happened

Give strength to those that are suffering- the homeless, the hungry, those who have lost loved ones,

those who have lost the will to live.

Show your love to them, give them hope and show us the way to help.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

Amen.Carly MurphyRElIGIoUS EDUcATIoN cooRDINAToR (SEcoNDARY)

timely to thank our Business Manager, Terry costello who has managed the project the past 18 months and acknowledge his relentless work involved. In addition we thank our grounds and maintenance team - Geoff, Rob and lawrie who have supported the preparations in the lead-up to our opening of the building.

IMPORTANT NAPLAN INFORMATION

our Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students will participate in the NAPlAN tests during the week of May 13-15 next term. We encourage all parents and caregivers to become informed of the purpose and nature of NAPlAN, the responsibilities of schools, as well as your rights as parents, through accessing the website: www.naplan.edu.au. We also invite parents to contact the college, should you wish to discuss any concerns about your child's participation in NAPlAN. For families new to NAPlAN, the website is very handy. The NAPlAN, in its current form, has been an annual part of every school’s calendar since 2008.

Best wishes to Miss Kristy Howard, who will marry Justin (both ex-scholars) during the term break. She will return as Mrs o'Keefe in Term 2. congratulations!

As I start to think about my Easter preparations and the extended family who will be visiting my mind wanders to; where will they stay? What will we eat? I then take a moment to reflect on the real meaning of Easter. I remember back to my childhood sitting at Easter Vigil Mass and the wise priest, whose words I have remembered for a very long time, ‘As you bite in to your first hollow Easter egg in the morning, enjoy the taste and think of the bitten egg as the empty tomb from which Jesus has risen.’ From a child perspective Easter is a time for Easter eggs - I encourage you to acknowledge this, but also share this story, to help deepen your families understanding of the true meaning of Easter.

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Throughout last week, teachers, parents and students have strengthened the partnership between home and school through engaging in learning conversations. The rich dialogue and sharing enables parents, students and teachers to evaluate learning and set goals for the remainder of the year. If you have not made a time to talk with your child’s teacher, please contact the campus offices to make a mutually convenient appointment.

GIRLS BASKETBALL CARNIVAL

Recently students from STc and olHcc participated in the Girls’ Basketball carnival. All the girls had an amazing day, and participated with good sportsmanship and an amazing attitude towards other teams. The teams were made up of girls from both campuses, and they enjoyed getting to know their peers from across town. Thank you to parents and friends who assisted with scoring and Mrs Edwards and Mrs Ness for coaching the girls.

SA REFUGEE WEEK POSTER AWARDS ExHIBITION 2014

CYBER SAFETY

last year I presented information to most of our year levels around some of the commonly used social networking sites and some of the risks associated with them. one critical element which I wasn’t able to share with the students was around the behaviours of predatory internet users.

This Friday night, from 6:45 – 8:30pm, the University of South Australia is hosting the carly Ryan community Forum with the theme “cyber crime – How to keep our kids safe”. one of the speakers is Sonya Ryan who for the past 6 years has dedicated herself to the promotion of internet safety through the carly Ryan Foundation in memory of her daughter carly. carly was tragically murdered after befriending an internet predator posing as a teenage boy. Sonya provides counselling for victims of internet crime and provides Police with information to help prevent crimes against children. In 2013 Sonya was awarded “South Australian of the Year”.

This Forum is open to parents and children over the age of 12. I hope to see many of you in attendance. This event is free, however, you can give a donation to the carly Ryan Foundation.

PARENT INTERVIEWS

over the past few days a number of parents made time to talk with teachers about the progress of their children. It is understandable that these days may not have suited all families, as such you are welcome to contact your children’s teachers and make appointments to discuss progress and concerns for early next term.

AUSTSWIM COURSE

The Whyalla leisure centre is hosting a course for students ages 16 years and older who would like to learn to become a qualified swimming instructor. Whilst there is an initial cost to cover the course, the qualification is something through which students could earn money and the qualification can be counted toward SAcE. The course is being held on the weekend of May 24 and 25. Interested students will need to go online to register, the website is www.austswim.com.au.

CHANGE OF UNIFORM

Reminder that now is the time to check the condition and fit of the winter uniform. Although there is a two week grace period, before students need to wear the full winter uniform, they are not permitted to wear a mixture of winter and summer uniform.

It is quite concerning that a number of students are not following the college uniform policy with regard to ear rings and jewellery. As a reminder students are permitted to wear only one ear ring per lobe and a watch. Students will be asked to remove any other visible piercings, wrist ornaments and necklaces their compliance is appreciated. Facial jewellery, keepers, or concealing band-ads are not permitted.

MOBILE PHONES

A reminder that students are not to use their mobile phones at school. If a child is feeling unwell the correct procedure is to report to the front office with a diary note from the teacher. The Senior First Aid Staff will assess the situation and if necessary contact the parents on behalf of the child. Please assist us in encouraging your child to follow the process.

TERM 2

Term 2 starts on Tuesday, April 29. We look forward to seeing all students return relaxed and prepared to engage in their learning.

YEAR 8 HISTORY

In Year 8 History we have been learning about Medieval Europe and the Black Plague. Students have enjoyed discussing the strange and unusual facts of the era in class, and have even created mini-plays to showcase their understanding of Plague treatments.

“We have enjoyed learning about The Plague as there are so many interesting fact that I never knew.”

YEAR 12 PASTORAL CARE

In Year 12 Pastoral care students have been learning about effective study habits. They have been examining their own study space, and existing study routine, and have aimed to improve these. Students have learnt that they must be doing homework in 40 minute blocks, this is the most effective way at it keeps them awake and sharp. They have also learnt that they must be working in a quiet and tidy environment, away from distractions such as Facebook, television and loud noises. The Year 12s have created a study routine, one that they should follow so that they remain on schedule and best utilise their homework/study time. It is recommended that one must alternate study with ‘me time,’ as rigorous, never ending study may result in increased stress levels and therefore an ineffective outcome. For this reason, myself,

alongside the Year 12 caregroup teachers, decided to put aside one Pastoral care for some fun bonding activities. our caregroup "Battle Royale", tested the students' general knowledge and physical expertise. After the "Quiz-o-Rama", there was one caregroup who were clearly in the lead, they had worked effectively together to answer the questions, ensuring that the consulted with one another. The physical activities included tunnel ball and ring toss, these showcased the caregroups' ability to communicate effectively and work together. Students have enjoyed our Pastoral care, and found the skills and bonding opportunities to be invaluable.

New Primary Campus Development - Questions & Answers

ISSUE: #2, April 10, 2014

______________________________________________________________________

It is important to remember when reading these questions and answers, that we are 2-3 years from relocating to the new site. This means you need to imagine your particular scenario 2-3 years from now. For example, if your youngest or only child is in Year 6 now, then all of the questions below have no impact on your child’s schooling, as they would be in Year 8 or 9 when the new school is finally operational.

These (continued) Questions & Answers were compiled with the knowledge we currently have in regard to the development of this new school. Future changes in governments or government policies may change some of these answers in years to come.

Who helps the college in designing and building the new school?

Catholic Education SA have a team dedicated to buildings and refurbishments of schools. They will assist with the whole process and ensure ‘we know what we are doing’. There are some aspects of a school that must be included and some will be determined by funding. Ultimately it is the College Board that chooses an architect and builder and we must follow a tender process.

How will you consider residents’ interests?

The planning committee which includes architects, will consider some of the possible concerns and will also research school design in terms of ‘cloistering’ buildings, noise considerations, traffic, car-parking and other matters. Council have a range of requirements that must be met and any applications for development have public consultation in the process.

Will ‘old’ parts of STC and OLHCC be re-used in the new school? Yes, to some extent. With responsible stewardship in mind, some buildings, air conditioners, whiteboards, pin boards, ICT equipment, playground equipment, furniture, etc, all can, and will be relocated. There will also be a range of brand new classrooms, learning spaces play spaces and offices.

What car-parking for pick up and drop off will be provided and have you considered traffic?

There have been preliminary discussions with The Whyalla City Council regarding traffic and ‘kiss ‘n’ drop” zones. Car-parking and pick up/drop off zones are very important elements of school design and can be legislated requirements of general capital works of significance.

Will the school have its own oval or use the soccer pitch next door?

There is ample room on our new site for an oval, or multiple large grassed areas catering for different age groups to be part of the design brief.

How will the new school ensure that the special aspects of my current campus are retained?

One example is the ‘small school feel’ of STC which is very much about its ‘cloistered effect’ created by the building and yard layout. We will endeavour to include this aspect in our design brief. Another is the great resource centre at OLHC – we see the new Samaritan primary resource centre as being a very important hub of the school.

We only sent our child to STC/OLHCC because it was very close to where we lived and now the new school will make it difficult for our child to attend. Will any arrangements be made to transport children to and from the “old” sites?

The committee will look into this issue and explore existing local bus services and future options.

What will the new school be called?

The old names were kept for the past 7 years as a way of distinguishing between the 2 primary campuses. We would not favour one over the other and would be more likely to re-name the new primary campus through a community consultation process, as we did with the new college name at amalgamation and when we named Samaritan Hall.

Will maintenance and repairs still be carried out at STC and OLHCC in the next 2-3 years?

Absolutely. Work, Health & Safety standards and appropriate conditions for teaching and learning will never be compromised. Whilst some new facilities may not be installed closer to the date of the big move, equipment that teachers need for teaching will always be provided, updated and maintained.

Will the road between the new site and St Teresa’s Church be closed off? ie: joining the school and church?

Whilst it looks like a great advantage to have that section of Wilsdon Street closed off to join the church and the school, it is not a simple thing to make happen and it is very expensive. It isn’t something that will be part of the initial design of the new school.

Where can I find updates in the future? Our new website will go live in Term 2. We will have a dedicated section. Please refer to last week’s Newsletter for ISSUE #1 Q&A. Currently, any further questions can be directed to [email protected]
