The launch of the Artscape Women’s Humanity Arts Festival

More cirque “enchantment” coming to Cape TownA new international cirque produc-tion – ‘Enchanted’ – is coming Cape Town’s way. Opening on September 1 in Green Point, the showcase is produced and directed by Sebastian Cassie and presented by Showcasting. ‘Enchanted’ will merge international entertainment artists with a “top” South African creative team.

‘Enchanted’ will run for a limited season into mid October and is billed as “a thrilling cirque production with mesmerising acts that have never been seen before in South Africa”, performed in a 450 seater spiegeltent shipped from Belgium and construct-ed by renowned Belgian tent master Rik Klessens. Elements within include an interactive zone, VIP bars serving premium brands, an oyster and bub-bly booth, an accessory store and cu-linary fare.

Hosted by local comedienne Mel Jones and Piky Pokus from Argentina, acts lined up include crossbow con-tortionist and silk artist Orissa Kelly, cloud swing and hoop artist Tom McKinnon, laser and bubble magic man Thomas Favaro, a disco inspired roller skating pair, a heart stopping knife throwing duo, and many more.

The magic unfolds the moment guests step inside the venue to be greeted by quirky ‘Enchanted’ artists, setting the tone for evening’s enter-tainment. After eating from tapas platters and enjoying the two-hour show, the resident DJ will take over and the audience can party with the cast, late into the night.

‘Enchanted’ brings “the best of the outstanding spiegeltent shows” that have preceded it, with an emphasis on artistry. The show has an “engag-ing” narrative running throughout in the style of nouveau-cirque produc-tions. It’s “cirque” redefined, in an in-timate setting with a service offering.

Showcasting is headed up by Se-

bastian Cassie and Michael Carrigan, the driving force behind this world-class cirque production. Having been involved in some of Australasia’s most successful circus shows, musi-cal theatre and stage productions, the dynamic team have set up a local office in South Africa, uniting artists from around the globe. “Having the opportunity to bring this enchanting and unique production to my home country is a dream fulfilled,” says Cassie, who hails from Cape Town and grew up in New Zealand.

‘Enchanted’ will be presented on P3 parking in Green Point, in front of the Cape town stadium (opposite Mcdonald’s).Performances are from Wednes-days to Fridays at 8pm, satur-days at 3pm and 8pm and sun-days at 5pm.tickets cost from r250 for access to the cirque theatre show and the after party. to enquire about tickets, group offers, corporate packages and branding and prod-uct placement opportunities, call 0744 888 222 and visit www.En-chantedCirque.com. doors open at 6.30pm before evening perfor-mances and the on-site booking office will be open weekdays from 5pm and on weekends from 12pm.

Marlene le Roux is the CEO of Artscape The-atre Centre. She is a proud woman with a disability and although it was a painful jour-ney to get to this point, she still works tire-lessly to share her journey with other women that are going through similar experiences. She has two beautiful children, Aimee and Adam. Adam has Cerebral Palsy and he is mentally and physically disabled. Marlene is an activist and an advisor to both abled and disabled persons and uses her experiences to mentor company executives and government institutions how to overcome their fear to employ persons with disabilities.

In 2008 Marlene set out to change per-ceptions with her book ‘Look at me’. This book showcases the real life stories of 23 courageous, strong and sensual women with various disabilities in South Africa. Some of the women were born with a disability; oth-ers were disabled through an accident or ill-ness later in life. “I realised from a young

age that society puts people with disabilities in a box with an ‘ag shame’ attitude and I felt I wanted to celebrate who I am – dis-ability and all,” says Marlene. “I realised that only a person with a disability can change the mindset of society.”

Marlene le Roux is a true inspiration and leads by example when it comes to living life to the fullest. Her soul purpose in life is to highlight the lack of “humanity” which marginalized groups face on a daily basis in South Africa, especially women and the disabled.

She is the brains behind the annual Artscape Women’s Humanity Arts Festival that culminates on August 9 every year. This is an opportunity and platform for or-ganizations to connect, network and forge partnerships to do work together as a united front. Workshops offering legal counseling - offered by legal practitioners - partner with Artscape annually, giving their time and sharing advice. The festival is balanced with book launches and entertainment that also offer the conduit of art for healing, learning and change. The aim of this Festival is to be

that voice through the arts and to express the elements needed to have a more embrac-ing society towards the issues women face on a daily basis. It is a day where all women regardless of their nationality, ethnic, cultur-al, economic or political divisions are recog-nized for their achievements. The Humanity Walk symbolizes the spirit of women who have marched to the Union Buildings more than 60 years ago. It has become an inte-gral part of the festival. The day ends with a lunch sponsored by The Next 48hOURS and kindly supported by the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, Grand West CSI, Cape Town International Convention Centre, Tygervalley Centre and Jive.

There are many people who want to be recognized for their goals and remembered as visionaries, or who want to change and save the world; then there are those who make a difference and are remembered for just being there for the people and help them lead the life they were meant to live – these are phenomenal people. We salute you.

Happy Women’s Month.Marlene le Roux

Wagner sets sails for Cape Town after almost two decade absenceCape Town Opera will be stag-

ing Wagner’s epic early master-piece, ‘Der fliegende Holländer’ (The Flying Dutchman), for four

performances only at the Artscape Op-era House – on August 17, 19, 23 and 26.

Grounded in Cape nautical folklore, ‘Der fliegende Holländer’ is based on the saga about a Dutch seaman who was condemned to sail around the Cape for eternity, unless true love set him free.

Director Matthew Wild’s interpreta-tion will unleash the ghosts of Dutch colonialism in the modern Mother City. “‘Der fliegende Holländer’ is a big opera and we are going to do a big produc-tion to match,” says Wild. “It’s a big set as well, which Michael Richard has designed. The beginning suggests the Cape Town docklands, then some sur-prises start to be introduced to that. Not to give too much away about the production, but we are essentially look-ing at how our colonial heritage and how the ghosts of Dutch colonialism are still with us in modern Cape Town,”

adds the director. South African baritone Jaco Venter

(the Dutchman) and soprano Johanni van Oostrum (Senta) return from Eu-rope to make their role debuts. The powerhouse cast also includes Austral-ian Samuel Sakker (Erik), American bass Gregory Frank (Senta’s father Daland) and Lukhanyo Moyake (Steuerman). Violina Anguelov (August 17 and 26) and Nonhlanhla Yende (August 19 and 23) will share the role of Mary.

“Redemption is a strong theme for Wagner in all of his operas, and Sen-ta embodies this theme: redemption through love. I find that beautiful,” says Van Oostrum, who also adds that her character is somewhat of a dreamer and an outsider.

Matching the virtuosity of the sing-ers with the bracing power of the or-chestra, CTO’s Associate Music Director Tim Murray will lead the Cape Philhar-monic Orchestra through the tempestu-ous straits of Wagner’s elemental score.

“I think it’s very easy to fall in love with the music,” says Venter. “If you tell someone to go and see a first op-

era in their lives, you would choose ‘La traviata’, or ‘La bohème’ or even ‘Rigo-letto’. ‘Der fliegende Holländer’ is one of those perfect ones to start off a love for opera,” adds the baritone.

With over 50 chorus members, an opera of the scale of ‘Der fliegende Holländer’ is a massive undertaking and was made possible due to the support of NASPERS.

“This production is the first Wagner opera that Cape Town Opera is staging since the year 2000; the last Wagner opera was ‘Tannhäuser’. It’s an abso-lute showcase for the magnificent Cape Town Opera chorus, with wonderful opportunities for the Cape Philharmon-ic Orchestra as well.

Wagner’s music is absolutely thrill-ing. It always has the most electrifying effect on an audience and if you can pull together a really first rate cast, like those that we have, it promises to be a night that is absolutely unforgettable,” concludes Wild.

Quanita Adams in ‘At her feet’

In 2002, ‘At Her Feet’, written/direct-ed by Nadia Davids and performed by Quanita Adams, exploded onto the South African theatre scene. The breakthrough play was described as “brilliant”, “tri-umphant”, “unforgettable” “timely”; “a production that will touch you, shift you and never really leave you”. From its first staging at UCT, it has travelled through-out South Africa, been staged in New York, London and Holland and won and been nominated for numerous awards (a Naledi, a Nom, two Fleur de Caps). For the first time in 13 years this beloved work is to be performed Cape Town for five specially staged performances as a part of Artscape Women Humanity Arts Festival, from August 8 to 12.

Written in 2002, ‘At Her Feet’ evokes the experiences of four Muslim women in Cape Town whose lives are touched by 9/11 of and by the honour killing of a Jordanian girl. These women – a secular

student, a tough-talking auntie, a Che-worshipping slam poetess, a recently married religious travel agent - narrate their own lives, offering “vivid, affecting, bitingly funny, deeply moving stories” that speak to race, love, faith and be-longing.

Through monologue, song, and po-etry these women offer the audience an intimate glimpse of their world.

‘At Her Feet’ was most recently per-formed in 2012 at London’s prestigious South Bank Centre. It is studied at a wide range of South African, British and American universities, is understood as one of the most important theatrical works to emerge around Islamophobia, Muslim women and Islamic Feminism post 9/11 and is considered by some as one of South Africa’s most significant post-apartheid works.

2017 marks 15 years since ‘At Her Feet’ was first staged. Davids and Adams have expressed their delighted to recon-nect this work with its original audience and introduce it to a new generation of South Africans theatre-goers.

tickets for the festival’s produc-tions are available from Compu-ticket or artscape dial-a-seat on 021 421 7695.Visit www.artscape.co.za for more information about the festival, par-ticipating organisations and the full festival program.

The second season of 2017 of the Cape Town Concert Series will open, on Saturday, August 19, at the Baxter Concert Hall at

8 pm with a concert and Milonga (live dancing) by the SAMA nominated Cape Town Tango Ensemble. This follows its popular appearance on the same series a couple of years ago.

The ensemble, established twenty years ago, comprises founder Stanislav Anguelov (Bandoneon), Albert Com-brink (Piano), Petrus de Beer (Violin) and Charles Lazar (Double Bass). The group will play a programme of vir-tuosic chamber music from the tango repertoire. Cornerstones of the Piazzolla canon will be interspersed with French and Eastern European concert tangos, as well as first performances of new works by members of the ensemble it-

self. The ensemble has delighted classi-cal audiences with its performances of the art-music of this genre, as far afield as Berlin, Singapore and the Leipzig Gewandhaus. To demonstrate to the physical dance aspect of tango, the re-cital will be followed by live dancing at a Milonga in the foyer, celebrating the Baxter’s 40th year on a suitably festive note.

CT Tango Ensemble has worked with international tango singers such as Adriana Edwards, Juan Simon and Gus-tavo Fasani, as well as mezzo-soprano Violina Anguelov, one of South Africa’s most popular opera singers.

Jazz in the Native Yards celebrates women’s month with almost all-wom-en band The Language of Being on Sunday, August 13, from 4pm at Kwa Sec NY 138 no. 52, Gugulethu. The Language of Being is a contem-porary, African jazz project that fea-tures original compositions, along with well-known African standards. The project incorporates elements of neo-soul, gospel and jazz, as well as funk into their sound, creating their own blend of African, jazz fusion. The band started this year when drum-mer/composer Terryl Bell approached trombonist Kelly Bell and pianist Nobuhle Mazinyane to work on origi-

nal material. “It was clear right away that we had the same vision after the first (meeting),” says Kelly. “We just clicked and knew we had something worthwhile.” The band was soon joined by saxophonist Georgie Jones and bassist Grant Van Rooyen, adding their soulful African blend to the mix. Tenor player Matthew October joined later and spiced up the sound with his silky tone and jazzy lines. “The collaboration worked, and has given The Language of Being their unique sound,” says Terryl. The band is hoping to release their debut album within the next year, along with planning a regional tour.

The Protea is our National flower and the Pomegranate is the National fruit in Xian in China. I believe that many

scholars debate whether the apple in the Garden of Eden was in fact a pomegranate.

The pomegranate is native from Iran to the Himalayas in northern India and was cultivated and natu-ralized over the whole Mediterranean region since ancient times. I love this biblical fruit; I love everyone one of the little ruby jewels contained under its skin. These seeds are called arils and are what we eat either raw, or processed into pomegranate juice. It is said that pomegranates are among the healthiest fruits on earth. They are said to contain a range of benefi-cial plant compounds, virtually un-rivalled by other foods. Studies have shown that they have incredible ben-efits for your body, and may lower the risk of all sorts of diseases.

An average pomegranate yields 3/4 cup seeds and 1/2 cup of juice. When you go shopping for pome-granates make sure that you choose them with a thin, yet tough unbro-ken skin. They should have a deep red colour and be heavy for their size, as well as a crown that is free of mould.

Pomegranates will stay fresh for

about two weeks when you store them in a cool, dry place. Make sure that this is out of direct sunlight. If you keep them in the refrigera-

tor, they can be stored for up to two months. Although it is recommended that you don’t freeze the fruit whole, the seeds can be frozen. They are in the shops now, so go and get some.

Let’s cook!

GrandWest is gearing up to host the exuberant Michael Flatley when he ventures to Cape Town this month to perform for his local fans for the first time. Based on the reviews of Flat-ley’s tour to Johannesburg in 2015, GrandWest expects the spectacular new staging of Flatley’s traditional show, ‘Lord of the Dance: Danger-ous Games’, to be a sellout success. The production will be staged at the Grand Arena from August 8 to 13.

“We are thrilled to be part of bringing Michael Flatley to his Cape Town fans for the first time. This is a not to be missed audiovisual treat,” says Elouise Matthys, the PR and Pro-motions Manager at GrandWest.

Although Flatley may not have performed live in Cape Town, he is globally known for his innovative choreography and performance at the ‘1994 Eurovision’, as well as his hit shows ‘Lord of the Dance’, ‘Feet of Flames’ and ‘Celtic Tiger’.

With all the precision and thrills of the original, ‘Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games’ boasts new stag-ing, “dazzling costumes and breath-taking choreography”. The show also features cutting edge technology in-

“Oscars of the hotel world” crown their winners

Soak up the rugby season “gees” at Boktown

Not everyone can get to the stadium to watch the Springboks, but Boktown is a place where the most

passionate South African supporters congregate for a “uniquely Spring-bok Supporters experience”. Rugby is not unlike a religion to many in South Africa and Boktown is “the church” at which the wearers of Green and Gold go to worship their rugby heroes.

You will find many of your Springbok and South African leg-ends at Boktown, supporting the current generation of Springboks. You will get to chat to them and mingle, but mostly you’ll get to party, as only Springbok supporters know how.

Boktown, presented by the offi-cial Springbok Supporters’ Club, cre-ates a unique experience that goes beyond the 80 minutes of on-field action. This rugby place-of-worship gives South African rugby lovers the best alternative to being at the game. Fans watch the test live on the big screens but the entertain-ment starts long before the first whistle and continues long after the final whistle.

It’s a Springbok rugby supporters’ dream experience that also speaks to the entire family. There’s interactive

fun for the kids, drink specials, food, bars, DJ’s, dancing, sponsor givea-ways and competitions.

There is always a visit from Bok-kie – the official Springbok mascot – and part of the experience is being able to formally engage with select South African Rugby Legends in a structured “Q&A” session before and after the game.

The Springbok Supporters’ Club will host Boktown for the Castle Lager Rugby Championships for the first time ever at the River Club Slug and Lettuce in Cape Town. Boktown opens two hours before kick-off, so get there early to secure your seat and enjoy the “gees” (spirit) and ac-tion with your friends, family and neighbours.

The Distell Inter Hotel Challenge has become a red-letter annual event on the hotel industry calendar. 2017 marks the fifth anniversary of this ini-tiative, a first in South Africa and a first internationally.

Described as a defining event for the hospitality industry in South Af-rica, the success of the Challenge has seen it labeled as the “Oscars of the hotel world”. Although a competition that provides glitz and glamour, the true role is serious and deep-rooted - providing a vehicle and a public platform for creating an environment of mentorship for the country’s hos-pitality industry.
