Mothers today want to be more independent while knowing they provide their baby with the best. Aiming to help maintain the babies natural sucking behaviour as learned on the mother’s breast Medela conducted research with the University of Western Australia, resulting in the development of the feeding-solution Calma.
As there is no such product as Calma on the market, the feeding-solution can be named a radical innovation. Even though commercialization of a radical innovation is often the least well-managed process of the entire innovation process, it heavily influences the product’s performance afterwards.
Launched in 2010, the potential of the current target group is exhausted, what makes it hard to generate further sales.
Reacting to this, Medela requested a new marketing strategy for a relaunch of the product.
Applying the tools Marketing Mix and a SWOT Analysis led to a better understanding of the company and its surroundings. Based on the gained information a new marketing strategy was developed, regulating further marketing activities throughout Europe.
These also include the in shop appearance of the product and the necessity of educating professionals. Besides, a change of the packaging and an extension of the target group is recommended.
