The History
India, the land of culture and tradition has a history of more than 5000 years. Our
traditional sports were intervened with the lives of our ancestors. Each region added
its own flavour to this ancient culture. The Vanavasi community is the early
practitioners of our traditional sports.
Vanavasi, who have been living a harmonious life blended with nature in the remote
forest and hills are genetically gifted with physical and intellectual attributes most
suitable for sports. Archery being one of them was known as “Dhanurvidya”. Archery
competition is not a new phenomenon. We can see innumerable archers in our epics
like Shriram, Lakshman, Arjun, Abhimanyu, Ekalavya, Karna and Dorna, etc. Through
this competition, the modern day archers will be identified who may set the world
records…………
Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram is the only organisation which conducts sports competition
exclusively for tribal youths to excel in the field of sports. Many of these tribal youth
are now representing India in the international sports events including Olympics.
Kalyan Ashram selects the tribal youth from remote villages through our 2233 sports
centres across the country. These youth compete at block, district & state level
sports competition and such qualified sports persons participate at national level.
The Excellence
Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram started the sports activities for vanvasis in the year 1988.
The activity was named Ekalavya Khelkud Project. The first ever National level
Games and Sports Competitions exclusively for Vanavasis were held in Mumbai in
the same year. 392 Vanavasi sports persons from 15 states participated in this
historic event. Since then such event is being organized every four years in various
parts of India. The last event was held in 2015 at Ranchi where 2836 sports persons
participated.
Archery Competitions – A Part of Ekalavya Khelkud
Archery is practiced by tribal as a way of life. Our culturally rich tribes are the real
torch bearers of this ancient art. To bring out these natural skills, Kalyan Ashram
Started conducting Archery competitions every year since 1997. Last year these
competitions were held in Bengaluru where 262 Archers participated from
various states.

This year All India Archery Competition for Vanvasis will be held in Mumbai.
Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram, Konkan Prant is proud to host this four days Archery Competition.
Over 350 archers from various states, officials and prominent personalities will be participating in this event.
It is going to be a unique opportunity for all of us, especially all Mumbaikars to witness this competition.
We can also enjoy the Colourful Cultural Programmes which will be held every evening.
