“The opening suite from Bizet’s Carmen was a taste of things to come. Not only did the six short movements have plenty of the NYO’s trademark energy, but the playing was full of the opera’s bright colours and tragic intensity. In de Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain soloist Ben Dawson was an eloquent advocate for its lush, shimmering charms. The rapport between Ben Dawson and the NYO was apparent throughout the performance. After the interval came Cesar Frank’s D Minor Symphony, conductor Alpesh Chauhan encouraging his young players to create light and shade through a careful control of dynamics. The triumphant, exhilerating conclusion was a fitting way to end yet another demonstration of the NYO’s musical talent.”William Ruff, Nottingham Post, Nov 2014

It is a growing and dynamic organisation dedicated to inspiring and developing musical talent in Nottinghamshire. Altogether there are now almost 300 players representing some 50 schools in Nottinghamshire and beyond.

The five orchestras under the NYO umbrella learn to become part of a team, working in their groups to play to the best of their ability. We offer the opportunity for the young instrumentalists to play a wide range of music and all of the players have the exciting experience of performing to an audience in venues in and around Nottingham, including the Royal Concert Hall and the Albert Hall.

Our aim is to promote the musical development of young local musicians in full time education. We have the Training, Intermediate and Senior Orchestras plus the two Jazz Orchestras NYJO 1 and NYJO 2, all working under the guidance of experienced tutors.

Famous musicians have taken part in many of the Senior Orchestra’s concerts. On 2nd March 2013 we were delighted to host the return of Julian Lloyd Webber to the Royal Concert Hall to play Elgar’s Cello Concerto.

Over the years the NYO has also commissioned a number of new compositions. In 2008 the NYO premiered John Dankworth’s Jazz Violin Concerto and the orchestra was thrilled when he joined them on stage for an unforgettable performance of The A Train.
