Worlds First Post-Combustion CCS Coal UnitIs Online in CanadaThe first full-scale commercial post-combustioncarbon capture and sequestration(CCS) project at an operating coal-firedpower plant is now online in Estevan, Saskatchewan,roughly 10 miles north of theU.S. border. The heart of the C$1.4 billionproject at Boundary Dam Power Station isthe rebuilt 110-MW Unit 3, originally commissionedin 1970.The project, which celebrated its grandopening Oct. 2, has given a new missionto an aging power plant, the largest coalfiredplant in the SaskPower fleet. The sixBoundary Dam Power Station units wereoriginally commissioned between 1959and 1978 and have a combined capacityof 824 MW. The utility, a Crown corporation,derives about half of its generationfrom three coal-fired power stations; sevenhydroelectric plants, six natural gasplants, and two wind facilities make upthe balance of the total 3,513 MW ownedby the company.
