Comprehensive training in the assembly and use of our safety

Overview: An edge protection solution

protected workers during the fabrication

of a 35 metre long pedestrian walkway

at London’s new Crossrail Custom House

station, built by International construction

firm Laing O’Rourke.

There was a major challenge as workers

were forced to operate directly over a fully

operational and electrified rail line and

under the main electrical cables serving

Canary Wharf. Traditional solutions were

not viable, so it was decided that the

structure would be built off-site in four

sections which would then be hoisted into

place in just one day.

solution, helping us overcome both

safety and environmental issues on a

Overview: Forming part of the largest

infrastructure project in Holland, the

construction of a second Holland Bridge

across the Ijmeer Channel will widen the

A6 motorway to four lanes in each

direction and led to the specification Steel

Mesh Barrier Edge Protection System.

During the construction of the 300 metre

long bridge, civil engineers VolkerWessels

installed 700 LM of Steel Mesh Barriers

along each side of the extensive concrete

deck and steel works using the Adjustable

Safety Posts and the Shuttering

Overview: Built next to Helsinki’s main

train station, KPMG’s new headquarters

required Steel Mesh Barrier Edge

Protection and the Safety Net Fan to

protect workers, the public and trains.

Tasked with developing a bespoke solution

for the installation of Safety Net Fans as

drilling into the slab was not possible.

Combisafe developed a solution that

enabled all 28 Safety Net Fans to be lifted

into place using a tower crane and

installed in one day.

“As well as protecting pedestrians,

another reason for the safety measure

were the actual railway cars and the

presence of the high power lines. It was

vital that debris didn’t fall on the trains,

dislodge the high power lines or

conduct electricity to the people at

ground level. Following a risk analysis,

the Safety Net Fans were lifted to higher

floors to coincide with the forming

activities and to have the netting as

high as possible to catch any debris.”

Overview: The £160 million Eagle House

development in London was the UK’s first

project to combine the COMBISAFE

POWER POST with vertical netting. To

ensure the highest standards of safety

during the two year construction

programme, Mount Anvil turned to the

practical experience and product expertise

of COMBISAFE. With the crucial

requirement to retain all loose materials

within the structure, a fast installation and

easy access to the cladding brackets,

COMBISAFE supplied 252 POWER POSTS

and 234 vertical nets which were delivered

in blue to match Mount Anvil’s branding.

Overview: For the construction of a

stunning new €90 million National

Military Museum in Soesterberg

Netherlands, the main contractor required

an edge protection system that offered

reliability, flexibility and compatibility with

flat roofs.

HEIJMANS hired 500 linear meters of the

COMBISAFE Counterweight System for

use on the roof, installed Steel Mesh

Barriers on the floor and used Steel Mesh

Barrier Stairs to protect workers from stair

edges.

COMBISAFE® operates in many markets across the world and recognises the need to develop posts

and attachments that integrate with existing structures. The Steel Mesh Barrier S-system of posts

and attachments have been developed to include square posts and supporting attachments for

markets such as Germany and the Nordics while the C-system with circular posts and attachments

were developed for markets such as the UK and the Netherlands. If you are not sure which system

best suits your needs, please speak to one of our product specialists.

STEEL MESH BARRIER STAIR

In terms of edge protection, staircases have traditionally

presented a significant safety challenge - previously, even

providing basic safety features generally necessitated the

improvised cutting of tubes and timber boards which

themselves carried inherent safety issues.

Based on the trusted Steel Mesh Barrier system, the Steel

Mesh Barrier Stair provides an unrivalled systemised

solution specifically designed to work alongside Steel Mesh

Barrier protected landings for exceptional continuous edge

protection.

FRAMED BARRIER SYSTEMThe Framed Barriers offer a simpler, stronger and more

systemised alternative to the more traditional options of

guardrails and toeboards. The traditional options also have

the disadvantage of needing many component parts and

requiring the replacement and disposal of timber rails

between jobs while the Framed Barriers are reusable,

quicker to install and compliant to EN13374 Class A.

POWER POST SYSTEMThe POWER POST is a full height containment system that allows

you to install edge protection from floor to soffit without the need

for mechanical anchors. With a height adjustment from 2.7m up

to 4.2 metres (when using the extender) the friction only

installation applies a compressive force of 7.0kN, providing EN

13374 class A compliant performance as well as easy fitting and

adjustment. The telescopic post, once installed, can be used with

a single level of Steel Mesh Barriers or deliver full height

containment using barriers or nets.

COUNTERWEIGHT SYSTEMThe Counterweight edge protection system with its innovative

weight handling trolley is a freestanding solution for flat roof

construction and renovation. Made of galvanised steel with

recycled rubber weights for maximum durability, it provides

protection to EN 13374 Class A while offering easy access to

the work surface.

NET BARRIER SYSTEMThe Net Barrier System offers a flexible edge protection

solution to all types of roof construction and,

when combined with internal safety netting, provides a

secure envelope within which the roofer can operate in

complete safety. It will readily follow the curves of

standing seam roofs, accommodate extended curved

canopies, steep valley gutters, long verge overhangs, and

both inboard and trim line gutters.

Featuring the NEW SkyReach Anchor device

which incorporates a retractable fall arrest

block this in turn connects to the full body

safety harness worn by the operative.

Available flat packed, boltless and with

replaceable, adjustable feet, the modular

support base of the revised COMBISAFE

Loading System, allows the disassembled

units to be stacked.

Each system includes a weighted base

ballasted with 1500kg of precast ballast,

which is interchangeable with the previous

designs: alternative ballasting material such

as a well compacted 10mm rounded pea

gravel* or site-cast concrete can still be used.

The standard Loading System MkII provides

an operative with an anchor point 5.9m above

ground level. Just one COMBISAFE Loading

The SCAFFSTEP is a lightweight step device, enabling a scaffolder to erect or dismantle guardrails on the lift above, whilst protected by that lift’s ledger. The SCAFFSTEP is clipped onto the working level top guardrail at any position, and its adjustable feet bear on the boards.

SITE STAIRWAY

The Stairways are quickly and easily installed on-site, straight off the back of the transport, and are ready for use in minutes.

Set up between 25° and 50°, users can carry

small tools, equipment and materials in

safety and comfort.

They can be set up on table forms, between

floors in buildings, in service ducts, around

the perimeter, or elsewhere, and can protect

the building’s permanent stairs from the wear

and tear of the construction process.

They fully comply with EN 12811, as

Temporary Work Equipment for access

between levels on scaffolding.


• The Stairways come in six lengths, which

can be joined and supported to offer a

single run climb height of up to 7.5m

• There is a double handrail on both sides,

which automatically adjusts to the correct

height to meet the angle of the stairs.

shown in the table ‘y’ axis)

2. Draw a line across the inclination diagram

3. Choose the number of steps shown on the

top section of the scale (from 3 - 36) and

follow the curve until it intercepts with the

rise height line you have drawn, to give

inclination required (24 steps = 38º)

4. Using a straight line, track down to the

Reach Length from building (5.3m as

shown on the ‘x’ axis)

INCLINATION DIAGRAMThe inclination diagram is used for selecting the Stairway length.Recommended inclination range is 25° – 50° (30° minimum for compliance with EN12811)

An example is shown in the diagram with dotted lines and should be interpreted as follows:


• Whatever the angle of the Stairway

(between 25° and 50°), the treads will

always be horizontal

• The locking mechanism ensures the stability of

the Stairway and keeps it at the correct angle

• The bottom of the stringers are shaped

to prevent slipping

• Being over 750mm wide, the Stairway

permits occasional passing if required

• Can be folded flat for ease of transport

• The Stairway is manufactured in steel

sections and has a durable galvanised

finish as standard

• The treads have a coarse expanded metal

surface for grip, which also clears muddy

footwear in use

HANGING PLATFORM

PLATFORM SOLUTION FOR DIFFICULT TO ACCESS STRUCTURES

The COMBISAFE® Hanging Platform offers a modular, quickly installed, working platform system, that can be fixed around the outer perimeter of structures, allowing high level access without the need to restrict the area below by building a scaffold for example.

This light weight system comprises a

console, which is suspended or attached to

the structure using a range of supports,

into which a boardwalk is fixed to create a

walkway. The consoles also support Safety

Posts and Barriers from the edge protection

system on the outside of the walkway.

The system has a wide range of support

options, to accommodate all manner of

different structures. The light weight,

relatively small components also make the

system suitable for installation in difficult

access areas, like bridges and viaducts.

The heaviest single item only weighs 25kg.

Flexible Solution

The COMBISAFE® Hanging Platform system is often used in places where a floor mounted

scaffold would restrict other activities, or would be too expensive. As it is installed at a high level

it limits unauthorised access and therefore offers improved building security.

The system has great flexibility to fit many building shapes. The overlapping boardwalk allows

easy adjustment of the support centres with no step or trip at the joint. There are corners, and

even self-closing gates to control the point of access. The Boardwalk has an integral toeboard,

and there is a screw-in stop-end to complete the protection.

The maximum load permissable on the walkway is 200kg/m², and the maximum span between

consoles is 2.4m.

snow loads, which can lead to unacceptably

high pull out forces on the scaffold anchors.

UBIX® TEMPORARY ROOFING - TENSION BAR

The UBIX Tension Bar is a structural addition to the standard roof which links from side-to-side with a series of pre-fabricated high tensile steel tubes, joined with standard UBIX beam spigots. The UBIX Tension Bar eliminates the need to make ad-hoc solutions using standard tube-and-fittings and eliminates excessive erection work, saving on labour cost.

UBIX® RUNWAY™ SYSTEM

SAFE ASSEMBLY AND DEPLOYMENT FOR TEMPORARY ROOFS

A complete system of tracks, wheels and roof supports offering permanent anti-uplift protection.

RUNWAY enables temporary roofs to be

erected in complete safety using the roll-

out method. By mounting the temporary

roof on the RUNWAY system, all erection

work can be carried out from safe working

platforms at a gable end, from which fully-

assembled roof bays are rolled out easily

into position along the track. Opening roofs

for craning through materials also

becomes much safer and easier using

RUNWAY.
