THE STORY BEHIND KAIDERMA® SKIN CAREThe following is the story that inspired the husband and wife team of Brad and Debi Zaro to develop Kaiderma® Skin Care. Both of their careers were in the pharmaceutical industry. Debi worked in clinical research conducting clinical trials on new medications. Through her work she learned the importance of proving the safety and efficacy of healthcare products. Brad completed his graduate work in marine natural products chemistry. His research focused on biologically active compounds found in marine organisms and their potential for development into new medications. Following graduation, Brad worked as a Chemist at a major pharmaceutical company where he continued his research on medications from the ocean. Through his research he became aware of the many unique compounds ocean plants and animals have developed to protect themselves from intense sun exposure and other environmental challenges. As Brad’s career took him into management he moved away from the lab, but often wondered if these powerful compounds could provide similar repair benefits for people’s skin.

Fast forward, following a 35 years in the pharmaceutical industry Brad and Debi retired and they purchased a vacation home in Key West. Not long after purchasing their house both were diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma. They wanted to continue enjoying time with their grandchildren at their vacation home which meant time in the tropical sun. Knowing sun exposure is the leading cause of skin aging (responsible for over 85% of skin aging), and more importantly the primary cause of skin cancer, they began looking for products which would provide the skin protection and anti-aging benefits they needed. After considerable research, and trying multiple products, it became clear that there were unacceptable trade-offs for most products on the market. Many simply did not work, while others made unsubstantiated claims, or contained potentially toxic chemicals. Debi and Brad felt there had to be a better way to protect themselves, and their family, while still enjoying the outdoors. They recalled Brad’s earlier research and decided they should explore the development of skin care products which employed the protective marine compounds he had previously studied. So, they founded a company named Mariner Biomedical and set-up a research lab where they spent the next two years developing a line of safe and effective skin therapies. The goal was to develop products based on natural sustainable ingredients combined with the anti-aging benefits of powerful active ingredients from the ocean. They also wanted each product to be based on real science with clinically proven results. They named the product line Kaiderma® Skin Care (Kai means the sea in Hawaiian and derma refers to skin). They exceeded all of their goals and are proud to stand behind each product in the Kaiderma® Skin Care line. Support Skin HydrationExtensive clinical research has shown the best way to moisturize skin is to reduce a process called Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL). This is the process of internal water escaping through the skin to the outside world. Countless scientific studies have shown that hydrating skin by reducing TEWL is far more effective thanhydrating from the outside in, the strategy used by most water based skin care products. Kaiderma® products are specifically formulated to reduce TEWL thus promoting significantly better and longer lasting skin hydration.

Replenish and Protect Barrier LipidsThe Stratum Corneum (outmost skin layer) lipids are comprised of three specific classes; cholesterol, ceramides and free fatty acids, referred to as “barrier lipids”. Through a complex system, our bodies do a good job of replenishing these lipids when they are depleted by washing, environmental exposure or other daily activities. However, research has shown that support of barrier lipids is also achieved by topical application of properly formulated products. Kaiderma products are formulated to eliminate damage to barrier lipids while helping to support and replenish these critical skin components.

Deliver Active Ingredients to the Skin’s Lower Cellular LayersIn order to provide benefits, active ingredients need to be delivered in sufficient quantities into the lower layers of the epidermis where the living cells reside. Many factors including solubility, molecular weight and stability determine how well active compounds can penetrate the skin’s barrier. As well, carrier and transport systems are very important in helping deliver actives into the cells, a process called bioavailability. Kaiderma® products include active ingredients in stable bioavailable forms formulated in carrier systems which facilitate the

Reduce Free Radicals and InflammationMost skin damage is caused by free radicals and inflammation. These two closely-related processes are the primary cause of premature skin aging, as well as several skin diseases including cancer. In fact the damage caused by UV- induced free radicals is responsible for 85% of skin aging. Once free radicals are formed they initiate a chemical process called oxidation which exposes cells to “oxidative stress”. Oxidative stress causes the deterioration of phospholipids that make up 45% of the cell membrane, as well as damaging proteins, enzymes and DNA. If allowed to proceed unchecked, oxidative stress and associated inflammation become a vicious cycle that leads to severe cellular damage. The most effective way to combat these destructive processes is with free radical neutralizing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents. Kaiderma® products contain some of the most powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds available without a prescription.
