Course Approval A Warsash School of Maritime Science and Engineering approved course.

Course Aim The programme is designed to provide continuing professional development for experienced pilots. The bridge

simulator and manned models give pilots the opportunity to extend their knowledge and practice, with

particular reference to special situations encountered within their own sphere of operations.

Course Objectives On completion delegates will have addressed, but not limited to the following subject areas:

1. Revision of principles of ship handling

2. Further enhancement of ship handling skills

3. Practise pilotage techniques in a variety of environmental conditions and port situation

Course Structure and Content The course takes place over 5 days. The first 3 days are spent in the manned model ships followed by two days

in the ship’s bridge simulator. If desired, the duration of the individual elements of the course may be adjusted.

The course is comprised of two modules:

• Manned Model Ship Handling at Timsbury Lake

• Full Mission Bridge Simulator Suite at the Warsash School of Maritime Science and Engineering, Solent

University, East Park Terrace, Southampton

Pilots have the opportunity to develop their existing skills and understanding of the behaviour and handling of

ships using the fleet of manned models. This is followed by a number of scenarios in the Full Mission Bridge

Simulator with agreed objectives, examples of which might be specific environmental conditions, exercises in

own pilotage district or dealing with emergencies.

Workshop Sessions

Workshop sessions are timetabled in to the schedule. Consultation with the pilots and consideration of relevant

and typical ship handling objectives will assist in determining their content. They may include, but not be limited

to, elements taken from the following list, which in itself is not exhaustive. Indeed subsequent workshops and

exercises may address a combination of subjects, for example, complex berthing operations in conditions of

current and wind.

Revision of principles

Local scenario berthing/un-berthing operations

Turning

Channel work

Varying environmental conditions - visibility, day/night, wind, current.

Thrusters

Tug use

Berthing

Escort

Anchor work

Interaction

Rudders and propulsion systems

Twin screw

SBM operations

CBM operations

STS operations

FSU operations

And where appropriate;

• Port Marine Safety Code

• Pilot/Master relationship

• Port passage planning

Further Objectives

Further objectives appropriate to the special situations of the pilots attending will be defined at the start of the

course in consultation with them.

Training Area

Some pilotage associations use their own area if available to conduct various local manoeuvres, which can

include exploring the boundaries of existing ship size, number of Tugs allocated, extreme environmental

conditions and/or reactions to emergency situations. Wide ranges of training area databases are held, but if the

specific area is not available in the library, similar/generic ports can be used instead. It may be possible to create

new area databases but this does need adequate notice and may incur additional cost.

Bridge Simulator Ships

The mathematical models used in the Bridge Simulator have been tested and verified to ensure that their

performance is realistic and is comparable to that of the real ships they replicate. They comprise a wide variety

of vessels ranging from Tugs & Offshore Vessels to Container Ships, LNGs, General Cargo, Bulkers, Warships and

Passenger Vessels through to a series of VLCCs.

General Information on Manned Model Ship Handling Module

The Manned Model Ships

The models are scaled from real ships or ship types. On board logic systems ensure that engine output, delivery

and response times and rudder responses, are correctly scaled. Manned models are a form of simulation and,

as such, are subject to some limitations and differences compared with the real ships which have to be taken

into account:

Time

Due to the scaling factor, ship handling manoeuvres are carried out in a shorter time-scale then the real ship.

This permits each delegate on the course to conduct a large number of individual manned model manoeuvres

within the week.

It also means that an individual has to respond quickly, thus emphasising the concentration and observation that

is important to the ship handler.

Speed

The scale of the models means that speed is very low in real terms. For example; a 1/25th scale model approach

speed of 2 knots (in scale terms) at one mile from the berth is approximately 0.4 knots in real terms.

Distance

The need to estimate distance is a fundamental factor in establishing correct approach speed, and can be aided

by using “ship lengths” as a yardstick. For example; 1/25th scale Panamax model, “Progress”, 4 ships lengths = 5

cables approx. at that scale.

Wind

The wind cannot be scaled, but the lake which is in a sheltered valley has been laid out to give optimum berth

and channel protection from various wind directions. Even in gale conditions areas of calm can be found behind

screens of trees and hedging and useful exercises conducted. Consideration of the effect of wind on a ship is an

integral objective of a ship handling course. Wind is a natural element with which a ship handler or pilot must

contend during the normal course of his profession. Consequently it is not advantageous to work exclusively in

calm conditions.

Lecturers will endeavour to conduct ship handling operations in the most appropriate scaled wind conditions for

a particular objective.

Briefing/Debriefings

All delegates will be fully briefed by their instructor before each exercise commences to enable them to

formulate an exercise plan. Once an exercise is underway the instructor remains on the jetty (or in an

accompanying launch) and does not intercede unless absolutely necessary. This is to avoid breaking the

concentration required during the exercise and allows the delegate to learn, if necessary, by observing the

results of their actions. When the exercise is completed a comprehensive debriefing is conducted on the

quayside to discuss the results. Such debriefs are considered to be a most important part of the course.

Staff

All lecturers are either; practising pilots, ex-pilots or senior mariners, who bring to the course their varied

backgrounds as practical ship handlers, which collectively offer a wide range of maritime expertise.

Page 7: Combined Manned Model and Bridge Simulator joining ......configured with inward or outward turning fixed pitch propellers. “Challenger” Scale: 1/15th Twin screw Ro-Ro vessel of

7 WSMSE/FCMMBSP April 20

The course is, by its nature, generally relaxed, informal and enjoyable as well as instructive. It is hoped that even

the most experienced ship handler will find that the time has been useful in improving his knowledge of a highly

skilled and necessarily professional task.

Nearby places of interest There are many places of historic and other interest within easy reach of Romsey. These include:

Romsey Abbey which is adjacent to the White Horse Hotel. An ancient Abbey church commenced in the tenth century as a Benedictine Foundation and where Lord Mountbatten of Burma is buried.

Broadlands House which is a short walk from the hotel and is open to the public at certain times of the year. This is the home of the Mountbatten family and in the nineteenth century was the country seat of one of Britain’s most famous Prime Ministers, Henry John Temple, better known as Lord Palmerston. The Queen and Prince Philip spent part of their honeymoon at Broadlands as did Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

Salisbury Cathedral. The ancient City of Salisbury is a short journey by car or train and is the setting for one of England’s most beautiful cathedrals near the water meadows of the River Avon. One of the four original copies of Magna Carta is preserved in the cathedral. The others are in the British Library (2) and in Lincoln Cathedral. The Charter was signed by King John at Runnymede on the River Thames in 1215 so it is 800 years old. It is still a valid legal document.

Stonehenge. The famous pre historic stones are on Salisbury Plain not far north of Salisbury.

Marwell Zoological Park is situated about ten miles east of Romsey near Colden Common

Page 11: Combined Manned Model and Bridge Simulator joining ......configured with inward or outward turning fixed pitch propellers. “Challenger” Scale: 1/15th Twin screw Ro-Ro vessel of

Winchester Cathedral commenced in 1079 has the longest Gothic nave in Europe. The city which was the ancient capital of England and King Alfred the Great, is a short drive from Romsey. It is also the site of the oldest public school in the United Kingdom whilst Winchester Castle houses the famous “Round Table” of Arthurian legend.

The New Forest National Park. The ancient hunting forest of William the First or the Conqueror is immediately to the south west of Romsey. William the Second, better known as William Rufus, was killed by an arrow in the forest by Sir Walter Tyrell, possibly or possibly not by accident.

The National Motor Museum which is at Beaulieu in the New Forest. The museum which houses a large collection of veteran, vintage and modern vehicles is the work of Lord Montagu of Beaulieu and is in the grounds of Palace House which is also open to the public.

Bucklers Hard in the New Forest on the Beaulieu River is where many of the Royal Navy’s wooden wall battle ships of the eighteenth century were constructed. There is an excellent maritime museum and some of the shipwrights’ cottages are open to the public.

The City of Southampton, an excellent shopping centre and major port which includes five cruise terminals, is ten miles from Romsey and was the initial departure port of the Pilgrim Fathers. RMS “Titanic” sailed from Southampton on its voyage to disaster in 1912. Southampton Football Club play in the English Premiership and are known as “The Saints”.

The City of Portsmouth once the most fortified town in Europe (the fortifications are all still in place around the city), twenty miles to the east of Southampton, is the home of the Royal Navy and the historic Dockyard. The collection of historic ships includes the Mary Rose, flagship of the navy of King Henry VIII, HMS Victory, the flagship of Lord Nelson, and HMS Warrior, the first all iron sea going warship. HMS Dreadnought, the first all big gun battleship was built in the Dockyard along with many other famous warships of the twentieth century. The nearby waterfront at Gunwharf Quays has many shops, restaurants and pubs as well as the iconic Spinnaker Tower. There are frequent trains from Romsey and Southampton to Portsmouth Harbour station next to the Dockyard. The M27 Motorway connects Southampton and Portsmouth. Portsmouth FC, (universally known as “Pompey”), play at Fratton Park and have been twice champions of England and twice FA Cup winners.

The beautiful Isle of Wight is a short, fast ferry journey from Southampton, Portsmouth or Lymington which is a small town in the New Forest.

London is about seventy five minutes by train from Southampton Central station and is easily accessed by road via the M3 Motorway.
