AWAY. All children and visitors should bekept a safe distance from work area.

6. MAKE WORK SHOP CHILD PROOF withpadlocks, master switches, or by removingstarter keys.

7. DON’T FORCE TOOL. It will do the jobbetter and safer at the rate for which it wasdesigned.

8. USE RIGHT TOOL. Don’t force tool orattachment to do a job for which it was notdesigned.

1. KEEP GUARDS IN PLACE and in workingorder.

2. REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS ANDWRENCHES. Form habit of checking tosee that keys and adjusting wrenches areremoved from tool before turning on.

3. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN. Clutteredareas and benches invite accidents.

4. DON’T USE IN DANGEROUS ENVIRON-MENT. Don’t use power tools in damp orwet locations, or where any flammable ornoxious fumes may exist. Keep work areawell lighted.

9. USE PROPER EXTENSION CORD. Makesure your extension cord is in good condi-tion. Conductor size should be in accor-dance with the chart below. The amperagerating should be listed on the motor or toolnameplate. An undersized cord will cause adrop in line voltage resulting in loss ofpower and overheating. Your extensioncord must also contain a ground wire andplug pin. Always repair or replace exten-sion cords if they become damaged.

10. WEAR PROPER APPAREL. Do not wearloose clothing, gloves, neckties, rings,bracelets, or other jewelry which may getcaught in moving parts. Non-slip footwearis recommended. Wear protective hair cov-ering to contain long hair.

11. ALWAYS USE SAFETY GLASSES. Alsouse face or dust mask if cutting operation isdusty. Everyday eyeglasses only haveimpact resistant lenses, they are NOT safe-ty glasses.

12. SECURE WORK. Use clamps or a vise tohold work when practical. It’s safer thanusing your hand and frees both hands tooperate tool.

ing and balance at all times.

14. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keeptools sharp and clean for best and safestperformance. Follow instructions for lubri-cating and changing accessories.

15. DISCONNECT TOOLS before servicingand changing accessories, such as blades,bits, cutters, and the like.

16. REDUCE THE RISK OF UNINTENTION-AL STARTING. Make sure switch is in offposition before plugging in.

17. USE RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES.Consult the owner’s manual for recom-mended accessories. The use of improperaccessories may cause risk of injury.

18. CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Before fur-ther use of the tool, a guard or other partthat is damaged should be carefullychecked to determine that it will operateproperly and perform its intended function.Check for alignment of moving parts, bind-ing of moving parts, breakage of parts,mounting, and any other conditions thatmay affect its operation. A guard or otherpart that is damaged should be properlyrepaired or replaced.

19. NEVER LEAVE TOOL RUNNING UNAT-TENDED. TURN POWER OFF. Don’tleave tool until it comes to a complete stop.

Additional Safety Instructions For The Sander1. Be aware of belt or disc rotation direction

when sanding.

2. Keep fingertips away from moving parts.

3. Never use excessive force when sanding.Doing so greatly increases the chance ofpersonal injury, mechanical damage, ordamage to your workpiece.

4. Always feed your work AGAINST thedirection of rotation.

5. DO NOT operate the sander if the disc orbelt are damaged or badly worn. Portionsof sandpaper could be ejected from thesander.

6. Even if you have a reliable method of dustcollection, use a dust mask or respiratorwhen sanding. Use eye and hearing pro-tection as well.

7. DO NOT sand material when you doubt itsstability or integrity. Inspect all materialscarefully for foreign objects like nails andstaples.

8. When disc sanding, feed material into theportion of the disc spinning DOWN towardthe table.

9. Habits – good and bad – are hard to break.Develop good habits in your shop andsafety will become second-nature to you.

Operating this equipment has the potentialto propel debris into the air which cancause eye injury. Always wear safety glass-es or goggles when operating equipment.Everyday glasses or reading glasses onlyhave impact resistant lenses, they are notsafety glasses. Be certain the safety glass-es you wear meet the appropriate stan-dards of the American National StandardsInstitute (ANSI).

Like all power tools, there is danger asso-ciated with the Model G1183/1276Combination Sander. Accidents are fre-quently caused by lack of familiarity or fail-ure to pay attention. Use this tool withrespect and caution to lessen the possibil-ity of operator injury. If normal safety pre-cautions are overlooked or ignored, seri-ous personal injury may occur.

No list of safety guidelines can be complete.Every shop environment is different. Alwaysconsider safety first, as it applies to yourindividual working conditions. Use this andother machinery with caution and respect.Failure to do so could result in serious per-sonal injury, damage to equipment or poorwork results.

110/220V Operation

SECTION 2: CIRCUIT REQUIREMENTS

The 1 HP motor will draw 12 amps at 110V and 6amps at 220V. A 15-amp fuse or circuit breakershould be used when fusing this combinationsander. Circuits rated any higher are not ade-quate to protect the motor from power surges. Ifyou operate this sander on any circuit that isalready close to capacity, it might trip the breakeror blow the fuse. However, if an unusual loaddoes not exist, and the circuit protection is stillactivated, you should have the circuit inspectedby a qualified electrician.

Fusing

Grounding

This equipment must be grounded. Verifythat any existing electrical outlet and circuityou intend to plug into is actually ground-ed. If it is not, it will be necessary to run aseparate 12 A.W.G. copper grounding wirefrom the outlet to a known ground. Underno circumstances should the grounding pinfrom any three-pronged plug be removed.Serious injury may occur.

In the event of an electrical short, groundingreduces the risk of electric shock by providing apath of least resistance to disperse electric cur-rent. This tool is equipped with a power cord hav-ing an equipment-grounding conductor. SeeFigure 1. The outlet must be properly installedand grounded in accordance with all local codesand ordinances.

The Model G1183/1276 is prewired for 110V, sin-gle phase operation. Figure 1 depicts the typicalgrounded receptacle which should be used. Thismachine can be rewired to operate at 220V, how-ever a different plug will need to be installed.Figure 2 shows a typical 220V plug. A wiring dia-gram is provided at the back of the manual toshow the two wiring configurations.

If you find it necessary to use an extension cordwith the Model G1183/1276, make sure the cordis rated Hard Service (grade S) or better. Refer tothe chart in the standard safety instructions todetermine the minimum gauge for the extensioncord. The extension cord must also contain aground wire and plug pin. Always repair orreplace extension cords when they become wornor damaged.

Extension Cords

Your G1183/1276 machine comes pre-wired for110 volt operation. A wiring diagram is providedat the back of this manual should it be necessaryto repair or revise the wiring. Always utilize aqualified electrician when doing any electricalwork on this equipment.

You must be surethat your particular electrical configurationcomplies with local and state codes.Ensure compliance by checking with yourlocal municipality or a licensed electrician.

SECTION 3: GENERAL INFORMATION

Grizzly Industrial, Inc. is proud to offer the ModelG1183 6" x 48" – 12" Disc Combination Sanderand its slower-speed version, the Model G1276.This saw is a part of Grizzly’s growing family offine woodworking machinery. When used accord-ing to the guidelines set forth in this manual, youcan expect years of trouble-free, enjoyable oper-ation, and proof of Grizzly’s commitment to cus-tomer satisfaction.

The Model G1183 and Model G1276 featureheavy-duty cast-iron bodies and tilting tables, andpowerful 1 HP single-phase motors. The ModelG1183 provides 3,450 R.P.M. disc rotation and a5,000 F.P.M. belt speed. The Model G1276 pro-duces a 1,725 R.P.M. disc rotation and a 2,500F.P.M. belt speed. Both have 3" dust portsattached. These sanders come prewired andready to operate at 110V.

Both offer a wide 6" belt surface for fast stockremoval and a 12" disc for convenient shaping.Fully-adjustable tables allow sanding at a varietyof angles.

We are also pleased to provide this manual withthe G1183 and G1276. This instruction manualwas written to guide you through assembly,review safety considerations, and cover generaloperating procedures. It represents our latesteffort to produce the best documentation possi-ble. Unpacking

The Combination Sander is shipped from the fac-tory in a carefully packed carton. If you find themachine to be damaged after you’ve signed fordelivery and the truck and driver are alreadygone, you will need to file a freight claim with thecarrier. Save the containers and all packing mate-rials for inspection by the carrier or their agent.Without the packing materials, filing a freightclaim can be difficult. If you need advice regard-ing this situation, please call us.

Piece Inventory

With all the parts removed from the container,you should have components as listed below andshown in Figure 3:

If anything is missing, call or write to the appro-priate service department listed in the GeneralInformation section. If anything is damaged,please follow the procedures described to the left.

NOTICEPlease keep all packaging materials untilyou are satisfied that the machine is ingood condition. Should you need to file afreight claim, the carrier’s agent will requireinspection of those materials. Settling aclaim can be difficult if packaging is notavailable.

NOTICEEnsure that the Model G1183/G1276 islocated on a flat, level surface. This willmaximize the stability of the machine andensure that adjustments are accurate. Forconditions where permanent mounting ispossible, we recommend bolting theCombination Sander to your bench top orwork table. This type of mounting will mini-mize vibration and provide a more stablework environment.

The G1183/1276 is a fairly heavy machine(155 lbs.). DO NOT over-exert yourself whileunpacking or moving your machine – getassistance. In the event that your CombinationSander must be moved up or down a flight ofstairs, be sure that the stairs are capable ofsupporting the combined weight of people andthe machine. Serious personal injury mayoccur.

When you are completely satisfied with the con-dition of your shipment, you should inventory itsparts.

Clean Up

The unpainted surfaces are coated with a waxyoil to protect it from corrosion during shipment.Remove this protective coating with a solventcleaner or citrus-based degreaser. Avoid chlo-rine-based solvents as they may damage paintedsurfaces should they come in contact. Always fol-low the usage instructions on the product youchoose for clean up.

Many of the solvents commonly used toclean machinery can be highly flammable,and toxic when inhaled or ingested. Alwayswork in well-ventilated areas far frompotential ignition sources when dealingwith solvents. Use care when disposing ofwaste rags and towels to be sure they donot create fire or environmental hazards.Keep children and animals safely awaywhen cleaning and assembling thismachine.

Do not use gasoline or other petroleum-based solvents to remove this protectivecoating. These products generally have lowflash points which makes them extremelyflammable. A risk of explosion and burningexists if these products are used. Seriouspersonal injury may occur.

Site Considerations

Make your shop “child safe”. Ensure thatyour workplace is inaccessible to young-sters by closing and locking all entranceswhen you are away. Never allow visitors inyour shop when assembling, adjusting oroperating equipment.

All die-cut metal parts have a sharp edge(called “flashing”) on them after they areformed. This is generally removed at thefactory. Sometimes a bit of flashing mightescape inspection, and the sharp edge maycause cuts or lacerations when handled.Please examine the edges of all die-cutmetal parts and file or sand the edge toremove the flashing before handling.

BENCH LOADThe G1183/1276 Combination Sander repre-sents a moderately large weight load in a smallfootprint. Most commercial or home shop bench-es should be sufficient to carry the weight of themachine. If you question the strength of yourworkbench, you can opt to reinforce it, or consid-er placing the sander on a freestanding benchsuch as Shop Fox® Deluxe Tool Table.

WORKING CLEARANCESWorking clearances can be thought of as the dis-tances between machines and obstacles thatallow safe operation of every machine withoutlimitation. Consider existing and anticipatedmachine needs, size of material to be processedthrough each machine, and space for auxiliarystands and/or work tables. Also consider the rel-ative position of each machine to one another forefficient material handling. Be sure to allow your-self sufficient room to safely run your machines inany foreseeable operation.

LIGHTING AND OUTLETSLighting should be bright enough to eliminateshadow and prevent eye strain. Electrical circuitsshould be dedicated or large enough to handlecombined motor amp loads. Outlets should belocated near each machine so power or exten-sion cords are not obstructing high-traffic areas.Be sure to observe local electrical codes for prop-er installation of new lighting, outlets, or circuits.

SECTION 4: ASSEMBLY

Assembly Basics

Belt Table

The belt table adjusts to allow you to sand yourwork at angles from -30° up to 45°. To makeassembly easier, we recommend you mount theCombination Sander on a table or bench beforeassembling. Four bolt holes are included on thesander’s base for mounting.

To attach the belt table:1. Swing the belt assembly to its vertical posi-

tion by loosening the 6mm Allen® capscrewshown in Figure 4. Tighten capscrew tohold the belt assembly in this position.

2. Remove the lock handle assembly and thethreaded stud from the belt housing using alarge flat bladed screwdriver.

3. Line up the belt table trunnion with the slotin the belt assembly bracket. Reinstall thethreaded stud, then install the flat washer,toothed nut, lock handle, lock washer andbolt, as shown in Figure 5. Make sure thehandle is installed so the table can be loos-ened and tightened without interfering withother components. The belt table’s tight fitis deliberate. Placing the table in position iseasier if you swing the belt table so the 45°positive stop bolt is located over the gap inthe motor casting cover.

Most of your Combination Sander has beenassembled at the factory. There are several sim-ple steps to follow to complete the assembly.

A few common tools will be required for assem-bly: Screwdrivers - medium and large straightblade or Phillips®, Allen® wrenches - 2mm, 3mm,6mm and open end wrenches - 8mm and 10mm.

Disc Table

The disc table adjusts to allow you to sand yourwork at angles from -20° up to 45°. To install thedisc table:

1. Loosen the two star knobs at either end ofthe disc table base until they reach theends of their threaded rods.

2. Move the sliding rails and the washers toallow enough room for the table to beinstalled.

3. Flip the 90° stop block out of position.

4. Install table securely between the two slid-ing rails as shown in Figure 6.

5. Tighten star knobs to secure the table inposition.

Belt Lever

The belt lever is used for releasing the tension onthe idler pulley for belt installation. To attach thebelt lever:

1. Thread the belt lever onto the loosen/tightencollar and secure with the checknut. SeeFigure 7.

SECTION 5: ADJUSTMENTSProper adjustment of the Combination Sander isessential to ensure its optimum performance. Theadjustments covered in this section are easilyaccomplished.

Tables

Tables should be square in both planes to exe-cute precise work. Procedures for accomplishingthis are described below.

1. Adjust the miter gauge to 90°. You can useit as a reference point from which to makeother adjustments.

2. Place the miter gauge in the table slot and,with a high-quality machinist’s or combina-tion square against the face of the mitergauge, check the tables for squarenessagainst the sanding surfaces. See Figures8 and 9.

3. If either table is out of square, loosen thebolts that attach the table to the trunnionand adjust the table until it is square to thedisc or belt. Tighten the table and re-inspect results.

Positive Stops

Positive stops are used to move the tables to dif-ferent positions quickly, without measurement.The belt table has two positive stops (one at 45°and one at 90°) and the disc table has one (at90°).

To Adjust the Belt Table Positive Stops:1. Loosen the lock handle.

2. Flip block into the 90° position.

3. Use a square to verify the accuracy to thestop.

4. If the stop is engaged and the table isn’tquite perpendicular to the belt, adjust thestop by turning the setscrew in or out asneeded. See Figure 10.

5. Flip the block back to its former position,then back to 90° to double-check accuracy.

6. Repeat this procedure with the 45° stop.You’ll need a known 45° angle, such as aspeed square or the head of a combinationsquare to check accuracy.

To Adjust the Disc Table Positive Stops:1. Loosen both star knobs.

2. Flip block over table.

3. Loosen check nut.

4. Place accurate square on table and againstdisc as shown in Figure 11.

5. Make fine adjustments by turning thesetscrew in or out. Secure the checknut.

Belt Platen

The belt platen should be adjusted out far enoughso it is flush with, or slightly higher than the upperroller. The rollers are slightly crowned, that is theyare higher in the center than at the edges. Thiscrowning helps the belt to stay centralized on therollers. The adjustment of the platen to the rollershould be done at the high point, or center, of theroller.

1. Loosen the cap screw on the side of thebelt housing with a 6mm Allen® wrench.This frees the in and out movement of thebelt platen

2. Use a straightedge positioned in the centerof the platen which extends over the upperroller. Adjust the belt platen in and out untilthe straightedge is just barely lifted off ofthe idler roller.

3. Tighten cap screw.

1. Loosen the two screws (A and B) shown inFigure 12. These screws hold the guard inplace.

2. Adjust the two vertically-aligned screws (Cand D in Figure 12) so the guard is uprightand not touching the disc. The top screwmoves the guard toward the disc and thebottom screw moves it away from the disc.

3. Rotate the disc by hand to see if the discscrapes against the guard; repeat Steps 1and 2, if needed.

4. Tighten screws C and D to secure guard.

Belt Arm Movement

The 6" x 48" Belt Arm can be locked at any anglebetween horizontal and vertical for a variety ofsanding applications.

1. Loosen the locking bolt as shown in Figure13.

2. Grab the top of the belt arm housing andmove the belt arm to the desired position.

3. Tighten the locking bolt.

The setscrew/checknut combination shown inFigure 13 acts as a stop for the rotation of the beltarm. If it ever becomes necessary to remove thebelt arm from the motor, be sure to remove thissetscrew to allow the arm housing to be slippedof the motor mounting.

Belt Installation Belt Tracking

The 6'' x 48'' sanding belt is easily installed. Firstremove the belt guard by loosening the four com-bination-head screws. Pull down on the springloaded belt tensioning lever which lowers theupper roller and allows the belt to be slid off of thetwo rollers. See Figure 14.

2. You should see a gap between the straightedge and roller. Measure this with a feelergauge.

3. Repeat step 1 and 2 with the straight edgepositioned at the opposite edge of the plat-en.

4. The difference in the measurements is theamount of "twist" in the belt. Reduce thetwist by adjusting one of the two trackingknobs. See Figure 16. If the "out-board"end (or the end furthest from the trackingadjustment side) of the roller measuresgreater than the "in-board" side, tighten theright hand tracking knob.

Tracking adjustment is conducted as follows:

1. Insure that the upper roller is parallel to theplaten (there is no adjustment for the lowerroller). This adjustment is easier to accom-plish with the belt removed. Remember thatthe roller is crowned, and a rough align-ment of the roller to the platen was alreadydescribed in the section entitled BeltPlaten. To determine parallelism for propertracking, measure at a point approximately.5'' from the ends of the roller. Use astraight edge on top of the platen andextend it over the roller. See Figure 15.

The new belt will have a rotation arrow on thebacking. Make certain the belt is placed onto therollers in the proper orientation. There is a rota-tion label on the housing indicating the direction.Pull the lever down and slide the new belt ontothe rollers and center it.

9. Test the tracking by cycling the machine onand off very quickly. See if the belt stayscentered during this test cycle. If the beltdoesn’t remain centered on the rollers, itmust be adjusted further.

5. With the straightedge along the edge whichis low, loosen the knurled locking nut andturn the tracking knob while watching thegap change between the straight edge andthe roller. Make small changes and checkfor a change in gap on the opposite side.

6. When the gap has been equalized betweenthe two sides, make sure the center of theroller, or the crown, is still approximatelyflush or just slightly above the platen sur-face. Lock the adjustment knobs with thelocking knobs.

7. Reinstall the belt. Move the belt by hand(DO NOT turn on the power). If the belttracks to one side or the other, adjust theidler roller slightly by backing off the lockingknobs and turning the knurled adjustmentscrews in or out. See Figure 16. Make verysmall adjustments and move the belt byhand for a few revolutions to test the result.Keep readjusting until you are satisfied thebelt is tracking properly when moved byhand.

8. Lock the adjustment in place by tighteningthe knurled lock knobs on both adjusters.

Moving sanding discs and belts are danger-ously abrasive. Use extreme caution whenworking near sanding surfaces. Failure toexercise care while sanding could result insevere injury.

SECTION 6: OPERATIONSThe aluminum disc accepts 12" diameter cloth orpaper-backed PSA sanding discs. The beltsander requires a 6" x 48" sanding belt. For discor belt sanding, we recommend a 100-grit (medi-um) material for general sanding chores, a 60-grit(coarse) material for rough work, and a 150-grit(fine) surface for finish work. See the currentGrizzly catalog for prices and ordering informa-tion.

Please review all safety rules for sanders and allpower tools before attempting operation. Thehints listed below are also worth your considera-tion:

1. When using the table for beveled sandingoperations, try to keep an open table angle(90˚ or more). This eliminates the risk ofgetting the workpiece jammed between thedisc (or vertical belt) and the table.

2. The surface feet per minute of the spinningdisc increases as you move from the centerto the rim.

3. When belt sanding, sand with the grain ofthe wood.

4. Do not over-sand soft woods such as basswood or pine.

5. Choose the correct sanding grit for the job.

6. Do not use the sander as a replacement fora bandsaw or a planer. It is designed for fin-ish work, not rough dimensioning.

7. Keep your workpiece moving across theface of the disc or belt to prevent groovesor ruts in the surface you’re sanding.

The belt table can be adjusted from -30˚ to 45˚and the disc table can go from -20˚ to 45˚ relativeto the plane of the sanding surface. Both tableshave positive stop blocks which will quickly posi-tion the table at the 90˚ and 45˚ angles. To adjustthe tilt it is sometimes necessary to swing thestop block out of the way, move the table, swingthe block back in, then contact the stop block. Ifangles other than the preset are desired, swingthe stop out of the way and use the angle scale ora bevel gauge to set to the position needed. Lockthe handle (on the belt table) or the star knob (onthe disc table) firmly in position.

Whenever possible, sand with an open anglewhere there is plenty of clearance between thebelt and the table. This will avoid getting the work-piece trapped between the sanding surface andthe table.

Surface Sanding

To remove a large amount of material quicklyfrom a large surface area, use the belt arm in itshorizontal position.

1. Turn the sander on and let it reach its fullworking speed.

2. Place the workpiece flat on the belt. Besure to hold the work securely with bothhands. Place one hand at the end of theworkpiece to feed it against the rotation ofthe belt. Place the other hand lightly on topof the workpiece to ensure adequate stockremoval. See Figure 18.

Disc Sanding

1. Loosen table lock knob and tilt work table todesired angle. Tighten lock knob.

2. Use miter gauge to guide work into position.

3. Ease workpiece into the half of the disc thatspins down toward the table. See Figure 17.

Bevel Sanding

When bevel sanding, be sure to re-position thework table so it is at a maximum of 1/16" away fromthe disc or belt.

1. Hold workpiece against miter gauge tokeep piece square to the disc or belt.

2. Move workpiece against sanding surfacewidth to ensure even abrasion. Use even,but firm, pressure.

3. When using the belt arm for bevel sanding,you will have greater control over your workif you tilt the belt arm and maintain the tableat level. See Figure 19.

Miter Sanding

The most efficient way to get a perfect miter is tocut the workpiece slightly long and sand it to thedesired dimension. Miter sanding can be done oneither the belt or the disc.

1. Loosen the knob on the miter gauge andadjust the angle to the desired point.Tighten the knob.

2. Slide the miter gauge into its slot and use itto hold your workpiece in position. Themiter gauge can be used in either directionin the slot to achieve the proper relation ofthe workpiece to the disc.

3. With light, but firm pressure, push the work-piece slowly into the downspin side of therotating disc. See Figure 20.

SECTION 7: MAINTENANCE

Tables

The tables and other non-painted surfaces on theModel G1183 and G1276 should be protectedagainst rust and pitting. Wiping the sander cleanafter every use ensures that moisture from wooddust isn’t allowed to trap moisture against baremetal surfaces.

Some woodworkers recommend using automo-tive paste wax on exposed steel and cast ironsurfaces. The wax provides a layer of protection,as well as reducing friction between lumber andthe table, making cuts faster and smoother. Avoidwaxes that contain silicone or other syntheticingredients. These materials can find their wayinto lumber that’s being worked, and can makestaining and finishing difficult. If you use pastewax, make sure that it’s 100% Carnauba wax.

The Combination Sander is ruggedly constructedto provide years of dependable service. Toensure that you enjoy maximum performanceand longevity, we suggest the following routinemaintenance:

1. Check all fasteners for tightness beforeeach use. Tighten when necessary.

2. Keep the Combination Sander clean formaximum efficiency and heat dissipation.Wipe away accumulated sanding dust andgrime after each use.

3. Inspect sanding disc and belt for excessivewear and damage. Replace if necessary.

4. Inspect switches and cord periodically forwear or damage. Replace if necessary.

5. Bearings are sealed and permanently lubri-cated, so no lubrication is needed. Checkfor wear periodically and replace whenworn. Increased motor noise and vibrationare both indicators of bearing wear.

6. Inspect roller drive bearings for wear.Replace if needed.

General

DO NOT make adjustments or attempt anymaintenance procedures while thismachine is running. Ensure that the switchis off, power is disconnected and all mov-ing parts have stopped before makingadjustments. Failure to do so could resultin serious operator injury.
