ALUMNI AND STUDENT FOCUS GROUPS

13 alumni & 7 students over 5 sessions – diverse backgrounds; not scientific

Asked questions aimed at uncovering value of Columbus State to inform vision &

mission:

What are the top 1 or 2 goals that you hoped to achieve by coming to Columbus State?

What are the 1 or 2 elements of your experience at Columbus State that were most

important in helping you achieve your goals?

What 1 or 2 elements do you wish you would have had or experienced at Columbus

State that would have helped you achieve your goals?

Solicited feedback on words that emerged during mission and values discussions with

Steering Committee, College Planning Forum, Cabinet, and Board

Feedback is consistent with what we’ve been hearing, with compelling examples of

how Columbus State fulfills its mission

MAJOR THEMES ABOUT COLUMBUS STATE EXPERIENCE

Goals for coming to CSCC varied, but all tied to preparing for a next step:

New career

New skills for job or life

Transfer to a 4-year program

Columbus State’s people make the difference – welcoming, caring, supportive, focused

on individual success

Education is practical and relevant – it’s about what people need “right now”

The experience here builds confidence – success breeds success

Brought new understanding of the value of Columbus State’s diversity

It’s organic

It permeates the Columbus State experience

It transforms the way people think, act and see the world

Page 6: COLUMBUS STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE Strategic Planning Steering Committee Session V September 7, 2012

The Columbus State experience is transformative

Alumni felt better prepared than peers when they moved to their next step

Columbus State has abundant resources and support, which more people need to

know more about and take advantage of

Multiple clear pathways to completion are very important, and not always well-

understood

Concern about “C’s Get Degrees” attitude – need to make sure we are all held to high

standards

USING WHAT WE LEARNED

Sessions validated many themes that have emerged in all other stages of the process

The exact words we heard may or may not make it into final vision, mission and

values, but we need to make sure the concepts do

Questions or comments on focus group feedback?

THE PROCESS

VISIONMISSIONVALUES

Step 2: Articulate the vision, mission & values

Step 5: Implementation planning & goal-setting for key priorities…

CURRENT REALITY

Step 1: Assess the environment & the organization

Step 3: Analyze the Gap

Step 4: Identify clear priorities to close the gap

Page 11: COLUMBUS STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE Strategic Planning Steering Committee Session V September 7, 2012

Step 1 – Assess the environment and the organization (March – May)

Community Interviews

Dr. Harrison’s Food for Thought

Achieving the Dream

Reclaiming the American Dream

Central Ohio Compact

And much more….

THE PROCESS – HOW WE GOT HERE

Page 12: COLUMBUS STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE Strategic Planning Steering Committee Session V September 7, 2012

Step 2 – Articulate the vision, mission and values (May - Present)

Vision and mission statement drafts

Small group discussions

Discernment of major themes

Many drafts and discussions

Testing of concepts with Steering Committee, Cabinet, College Planning Forum, Board, Students, Alumni, Dr. Harrison, Ologie

All in order to get clear on….

THE PROCESS – HOW WE GOT HERE

VISION/MISSION/VALUES

Vision (The “What,” “When” and “Where”)

What will be true for our stakeholders as a result of our work; what we will

have accomplished from their perspectives at a defined point in the future

The value we will have created

Mission (The “Why”)

Our role as an organization; why we exist

The institutional purpose aligning us with & directing us toward our vision

Values (The “Who”)

The principles & cultural attributes that define us and how we operate

Page 14: COLUMBUS STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE Strategic Planning Steering Committee Session V September 7, 2012

CURRENT VISION/MISSION/VALUES DOCUMENT

Incorporates input from 7-27 Steering Committee meeting, Dr. Harrison, Focus

Groups, and Ologie

Major revisions:

Took out context-setting sections – they were background to the main act!

Simplified vision, mission and values

Vision includes both Columbus State and its impact on the region

Mission provides more clarity on Columbus State’s unique role, especially as

educators

Values explanations are shorter and simpler, and some headings changed

This is the “long version” to summarize the work of this group – will likely also

end up with shorter/different versions to be used for various purposes internally

and externally

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Understanding that specific words/sentences might eventually be tweaked as we

continue our journey…

What is your reaction to the concepts in the draft vision, mission and values?

Are there major elements from the team’s thinking to date that are missing from

this description?

Are there major issues that need to be addressed by this group before Dr. Harrison

finalizes the vision, mission and values?
