This month is pure excitement at WOSU and it has nothing to do with the election!

We are thrilled to announce a new hour of original local programming starring our community every Thursday night in primetime at 8pm on WOSU TV. Starting October 6th, Broad & High, recent winner of two Emmy® Awards for its focus on the arts in central Ohio, will air at 8pm, followed by the new weekly version of Columbus Neighborhoods at 8:30pm.

Earlier this year, WOSU broadcast the 12th major documentary about the distinctive, historic neighborhoods of Columbus. Now, we’re taking this project to a magazine-type format with shorter segments each half hour about the history and culture of central Ohio. We’ll often pivot from history to discuss current and future issues facing our community, always bringing the longer perspective so important to building a better understanding of where we live.

Columbus Neighborhoods will have a dynamic digital presence (columbusneighborhoods.org) and the project will regularly host public forums to focus on some of the major issues facing our world. We’re also pleased that our educational team will continue to create digital learning objects – videos, lesson plans, and more – from the Neighborhoods programs which will be specifically designed for area teachers to use in their classrooms. This new three-year commitment to tell the story of our changing community is being made possible by major support from AEP, State Auto Insurance Companies and a number of other corporate, foundation, and personal contributors.

We believe we have one of the most talented public television producing teams in America and they are very excited. Kate Quickel returns as host of Broad & High and we welcome new Columbus Neighborhoods co-hosts Charlene Brown and Javier Sanchez to our team.

So start making Thursdays nights at 8pm your time to enjoy the arts, history, and culture of this remarkable place!

– Tom Rieland, General Manager

Ohio once again will be at the center of the political storm that is an American presidential campaign. And while 2016 has been particularly tempestuous, WOSU continues to be a safe harbor for political news reporting and analysis that cuts through the spin and looks beyond the poll numbers.

In the final month of Campaign 2016, WOSU TV, 89.7 NPR News and wosu.org will provide its viewers, listeners and users the unbiased information they need to make a decision on election day.

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump likely will make weekly appearances in Ohio, and 89.7 NPR News reporters and our colleagues from NPR and Ohio Public Radio will cover the speeches, protests and fallout. We’ll do more than just repeat the talking points; we’ll profile the communities the candidates visit and share the perspectives of the people who live there.

All Sides with Ann Fisher (10-noon weekdays on 89.7) will dive deep into the key issues of the campaign. Local and national experts will provide all sides of the debates over the economy, immigration and foreign policy.

Columbus on the Record (8:30pm Fridays; 5pm Sundays on WOSU TV) will tap the knowledge and experience of veteran reporters and political strategists and give perspective to campaign events.

WOSU TV and 89.7 will provide live coverage of the Presidential Debates (10/9, 10/19) and Vice Presidential Debate (10/4) as well as the Ohio Senate Race debate on October 20 between Republican US Senator Rob Portman and his Democratic Challenger Ted Strickland.

And of course, WOSU TV and 89.7 NPR News are your choices for thoughtful unbiased coverage of the returns on election night, November 8th. Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff will anchor the PBS NewsHour coverage featuring the analysis of political columnists Mark Shields and David Brooks. If radio is your choice on election night, 89.7 and NPR will provide live coverage and analysis from Washington and around the country.
