Tuesday, April the 20th, 1999 started offas a really good day. 1 went to SChool feelingconfident about where my lite was a t 1 have fourthhour off; so I spent that time having a longtalk with one of my friends outside; it wasa gorgeous day. Weleft a few minutesbeforethe bell

rangso we could get back to classontime. As

wewentup the stairsand partedto go ourseparate ways, I was lookingfor two other friends to goout to lunchwith(RyanShwayder andDeanna Shaffer,)

1 had gone out to lunch withRyan and Deanna onMondayfor the first time, but 1 forgotmy lunch money, Deannapaidfor my lunch then; so1was looking for them SO we couldgo out tolunch again and I could payher back. I couldn't find themso I wentdownstairs suspecting theywere already out the door headedtowardthe car, I stepped outsideandcouldn't find them. Iwaited there for a minute and suddenly, they carne walking out the exit at Rebel Comer. I caughtupwiththem quickly and we headedtowardRyan'sjeePtogether, By the timewe got to the car itwas about 11.12 a.m, Wedidn't notice anything suspicious about anything, Wejust did likebefore, we took our backpacks off and threw themin theback ofthe car and we all got in Ryanwas driving, Deannawas riding 'shotgun' and I was inthe backseat behind Deanna,

Weheaded for the McDonalds at Coalmine and Pierce Street On the way, I saw BrooksBrown walking south on Pierce slowly as i f something wason his mind, He had his backpackwithhim slumped over one shoulder. Looking as if therewasn't muchbeingcarried, the bag waspartlyempty lookingflattened a littlebit Wegot to McDonalds a coupleminutes later andwentthroughthe drive-thruorderingthe foodwe were craving, It didn't take us longbefore wewereout on Coalmine avenue again,

We stopped andwaited for less traffic to come throughso we couldget back to the schoolon Pierce, Suddenly, an ambulance sped by beforewecouldget on the street, We madeacomment together not even thinking it would be headed for Columbine, We got on to Pierceandheaded back up north towards the school. Suddenly police officers were guiding us into theneighborhood just south of the school, the entrance at the light wherethe bottom of the hill is. Istartedto ask questions that nobody knew the answer to aboutwhat was going on. Traffic wasvery slowenteringthe neighborhood because ofall the cars being pushedthrough there,

I saw Brooks walking againback towards Pierce from inside the neighborhood on thesouthsideof the street, Not thinking anything ofit, I stayed quiet thinking Ryan andDeannadidn't know him; but Ryan rolled downthe window callinghis name, At thistime I didn't knowi f he still had his backpack or not. He ran overto the car andjumpedinthe backseat nextto meyelling and cursing, knowing somethingwas up We asked himwhat was going on and hetold usthat there was a shootingat the school. As I froze in shock for a few seconds still clinching thefrench fries, we were told second by second ~ k n e w~ w a shappening,v

{")j,,.Qf h.lHetold us that heknewEric Harris and thathe was the one shooting At the time, we

thought it was only him, Laterwe pulled over in a northern part of the neighborhood and Brooksranout lookingtowards the school from Clement Part to lookifhe could see anything, He toldus all he saw was people running Hegot back inthecar giving us directions to a section of theneighborhood telling us hisdadwouldbe there shortly We pulled over while I used Ryan's cellphone to callmy Dad and tell him that I was okay

During the conversation I find out thatmy brother wasout and safe. Brooks thenusedthe phone to calla specific policeofficer or sheriff and let him knowwhatwas happening. Brooksalso told us that Erichad turned 18 about 3 weeks agoand ordered weapons on hisbirthday thattheseweaponshada threeweek waiting period and Tuesday wasthree weeks, He alsotold usthatEric wasabsent during 3rd and4th hour, supposedly to get the weapons,

Brookswas on the phone furquite sometime while the rest ofus got out of the car andlingered around, Later,Brooks' Dad showed up yelling at us to getinthe car and follow him totheir house, Brooks had a cord plugged in the cigarette lighter so he had to drive, leaving Ryanand me inthe backseat while Deanna still rode 'shotgun,' On the way inthe car we had the radioon listening as the news unfolded, We learoed there wastwo suspects wearing blacktrenchcoats, The first wordsout of Brooks' mouth were cursingand then, "Dylanl Eric and Dylanl."Deanna had startedto get scared and called her Mom (afterBrookswas offthe phone) wonderingi f her friends had called to saytheywereall right.

We pulled up in front of Brooks' house as Llooked out the window and saw my friendDenae withBrooks' little brother Aaron I walked upto her and gaveher a big hug, thankful shegot out unharmed, We allwent inside and the people around mewere Ryan, Deanna, Brooks,Aaron, Denae, Denae's mom, Brian Rathbun, and Brooks' Dad. I usedtheir phone to callmyMom(who was in Florida at the time) on her ceO phone, but I couldn't get through, I called myGrandmother instead, r caught herupto date, and letherknowthat my brotherand 1were allright. I tried calling mybrotherat home andat his friends house just so I couldtalkto him andhear his voice, but the more I called the more nervous I got wondering ifhe got home okay.

While allthiswas happening,Brooks' Dad warned that EricHarris lives just down th estreet so where wewere wasn't exactly the safest place to be, but the doors were locked, Ryandecided he would take Deanna homebutI had to find my ownride home after telling mydad Iwould be there shortly, I called home again after being toldI couldget a ridefrom Dense. Ididn't get answer so I decided to stay with Denae because I didn't want to go home by myself

Denae, her Mom, and I got in thecar and went to Ken Caryl Middle School to pickupDenae's little sister Melissa. Bythis time, I didn't know whatwas going on and 1 didn't knowifmy friends were okay We were able to get Melissa outof school as theywere having a lockdownbecauseof the shooting just downthestreet Wetook a different wayhome knowingPierce wouldbe over congested with cops and ambulances It seemed likeforeverbeforewecould even pull in a neighborhood off Bowles by Leawood, where Denae lives.

It ended upwe hadto parkthe car bya greenbelt andwalkintoLeawoodfrom there,Dense's Mom called her Dad notifying him where we were so he could pickusup. He arrivedafterwe satfor a few minutes just to take a break and to get some normal breathing in. Wegotoverto Dense's house andas wegot inside, Denae was relieved to seea couple ofher friendswho waited at the house for safety I got inand the news was breaking allover local channels, across CNNand MS'!'

We watched and watched andwatched, andbeforeI realized I had to callmyDad, myeyes were glued to the screen. I called him and let himknowwhereI was and that I was safe. Hetold me that myMom wastryingto get throughto mefromFloridaand that cut our conversationshort. WIlen myMom called I was told that two of mybrother's best friends were barricadedinthe choir room and that's whenthe tears started rolling. I had to getoffthe phoneandcalleveryone whom I knew their phone numbers. Alot of my friends were okay and safebut quite afewwere still missing and all I could do was panic.

We watched more news, and saw that the peopleinchoir had escaped. Theywererunning out of the building for dear fife. I noticed there was a bodylyingoutside whereeveryoneran by. I could onlyhopethe personwasokayor someone I didn't know. As I kept calling mymends I finally got wordthat one was out and at a mendshousewho lives nextto me. I wantedso badlyto go home and hug her.

Traffic was so had it wouldtake hoursto get throughfromWadsworth to Leawood onBowles. As I watched TV, seeing mymends get out, I was OVercome withjoy but stillwondering what happened to the ones inside. Later on, we learned that peopleescaping wereshipped on a schoolbus to Leawood where their parent's could pickthem up. Denae, her twomends, and I decidedto go over there andlook for mends. I saw manywith small cuts fromfalling to the floor and just running out ofthe building. I was relieved to see eachandeveryoneofthem. But I couldn't find mybest friend, Dan Rohrbough. I found his parent's there searchingfrantically for him. I huggedhis Mom. I didn't wantto let go. I couldonlyhopehe was just atsomeone's house andjust couldn't call from thephone lines beingtied up

We eventually went back to Dense's house when Dense's Dad offeredto take us home.He dropped Dense's mends off first, andthen finally I gOt homewithout a scrapeto my body.ran inand hugged myDad still not knowing if my brother got homesafe. Neighbors camerunning over to see meand hug me with sighs ofrelief Mybrother finally showedup and myDad told us that our Mom was onthe wayhome from Florida that night

We kept the newson and timewentby so quickly. Finally, the garage door opened andmy Momwas home. We ran over to the door and she held on to us as if she letgo we would begoneforever. We all sharedtears andthen Itotd Momthat Dan was missing. Later, my familywentover to the neighbors house as I stayed home waiting fora call to hear that Dan was okay.Thatcallnever came

By this time, I also knew that myother friend fromchurch, CassieBernallwas missing. All I could do was prayand ask Godto keepthem safe. I went to bed late that night not knowingwhere my best friend was The nextday,I found out that Cassie was shot inthe headforbelieving in God and Dan was shot inthe back several times, and died instantly.
