MISSION STATEMENT Columbia Art Center is dedicated to providing artistic experiences in the visual arts for all ages and interest levels, and connecting with local arts organizations and community businesses to create diverse opportunities.

OVERVIEW Columbia Art Center offers year-round art classes, rotating gallery exhibitions, a gift shop, summer art camp for children, art parties, studio rentals, a Japanese garden, art and life enhancement lectures and more. Columbia Art Center is part of Columbia Association’s Community Services Department and has been part of Columbia Association for 35 years. It has been a functioning arts school for more than 40 years and was formerly known as the Antioch Visual Arts College.

LOCATION Columbia Art Center is located in the Long Reach Village Center (next to Stonehouse Community Center), just minutes from Route 175 and Tamar Drive.

Infinite Creator: Installation and Paintings by Fidel Carey-RealmoYou are the spectator. You are the artist. Fidel Carey-Realmo’s interactive Infinite Creator installation is an homage to the great creator within. Colorful, decorative boxes of all sizes are located on the gallery floor and open to the public for putting them into various designs and patterns. As a backdrop to this interactive installation, Fidel’s abstract and mixed media paintings are on display on the gallery walls. This event is fun for families!

You will have the opportunity to express those Maryland colors through designs such as the black-eyed Susan, Maryland blue crab or even the state flag itself. Wear-a-Doodle Party For ages 5 and older Make an impression with your one-of-a-kind design. Imprint your artwork on a T-shirt or cinch bag. Choose your own theme. Note: Wear-a-Doodle items are not guaranteed to be printed by the conclusion of the party. If not completed by the end of the party, they will be ready for pickup in two days.

Minecraft Madness For ages 5 and older Are you a Minecraft fan? Do you want everyone to know it? At this party, you can learn how to draw your favorite 3-D friendly or unfriendly creature and put it on a T-shirt. Make your own party world and create a real-life game sword.

PAINT NIGHT PARTIESFor ages 16 and older Pick a personal and meaningful design to recreate with your friends at your very own Paint Night party! The selected design will be taught step-by-step by one of Columbia Art Center’s instructors. Great for birthdays or bridal events! Art instruction runs two hours, plus one hour for setup, refreshments and cleanup. Early reservations are recommended. OFFICE ART RESCUEColumbia Art Center is the ideal venue for companies to hold creative team-building painting activities in a relaxing atmosphere. The workshops can be held any day of the week, depending on availability. A canvas, easel, brushes, paints and smocks/aprons are provided for your team. TEAM-BUILDING PAINTING ACTIVITIES

Individual Paintings: Each participant paints their own painting with the help of the instructor’s step-by-step instruction.

One-Step, Two-Step Painting: Paint one step, then move to a different seat to continue to the next step.

Collaborative Painting: Everyone in the group contributes to a large painting (3 feet by 4 feet). One collaborative painting is recommended for every 10 painters at the event. These works of art are ideal for displaying in the office.

Mystery Masterpiece: Our instructor takes you through the painting process step-by-step. The fun twist with this project is that no one knows what the painting will look like until it is completed.

PLEIN AIR PAINT NIGHTS For ages 16 and older With Desiree Scherini NEW! No plein air painting experience is required! Paint from nature outside in Columbia Art Center’s Japanese garden, and learn plein air painting techniques for working quickly with shifting light and the use of the palette for expressing the landscape. There will be short demos including technique, as well as compositional details to strengthen the design of your painting. Bring a friend and have fun painting outside like the French impressionists did!

YOU, ME AND THE ZOO For adult and child ages 5-14 With Thais Piageti-Cassel Let the adventure begin! Come create a collaborative masterpiece with your young artist. Each person paints half of the animal’s portrait on their own canvas without looking at each other’s work. Create a one-of-a-kind artwork!

Provide your group with a new way of studying a subject while they have fun creating art. All workshops are designed to be age- and skill-level appropriate.

In a fun and relaxing atmosphere, use basic techniques of handbuilding (coil, pinch, slab) to express individuality and creativity. We will be using a variety of metal findings, crimp beads, wire for stringing the pearls, and pliers. This workshop is sure to ignite your creative desire to continue producing your own jewelry designs at home. All supplies included.

INTRO TO JEWELRY: MEMORY WIRE BRACELET AND EARRINGS For ages 6-14 With Shawnda Smith Perfect for beginner jewelry enthusiasts. Choose from a large variety of beads and charms to adorn your memory wire bracelet, which will keep its shape and dangle just right on your wrist. Create a specific pattern or add a variety of beads and charms that inspire you. Students will also create earrings. Pick a theme or match an outfit!

DRAWING SERIES 101: ALL DRAWING MEDIUM For ages 9-12 With Anna Beidelman Children love to draw, and they do so freely with great joy. Many kids reach a point where they want to achieve new levels of realism in their work. To do this, they must learn to see with an artist’s eye. This course introduces methods to help reach their goals in a fun and productive way. Each class focuses on working with a new medium such as graphite, charcoal, markers, chalk pastels, or colored pencils. We will also concentrate on a variety of drawing types — still life, landscape and portraiture. Each term expands the artistic horizon of every child, whether they are new to art or repeating the class.

Character sheets, sequential art (graphic novel, manga or animation keyframes) and story development will be explored.

Create a fashion journal and timeline. Construct an original headpiece and accessories, plus a presentation board to understand past and present trends.

ZENTANGLE TINY HOUSES For ages 11-15 With Arlene Mindus, CZT Do you like fairies? If so, join us to create colorful, beautiful and detailed tiny houses for fairies to inhabit and a mushroom made out of colored tissue paper. Design your tiny house with Zentangle patterns using multimedia paper, colored pens and pencils.The above materials will be provided, but a red Zentangle box with a black micron pen, a Zentangle pencil, a pencil sharpener, eraser, and a stump for shading may be purchased for $5 and may be used for additional workshops.

CERAMICS NOTE: All summer 2018 enrolled ceramics students can use the open studio to practice their skills for free. The studio is available when classes are not in session. See listing of available open studio hours posted in the Ceramics Studio. Ceramics classes include use of studio equipment, all bisque firings, glazes and glaze firings for up to 20-25 medium-sized pieces (approximately 200 cubic inches each) per session, e.g. 25 pieces for a 10-week session, 20 pieces for an eight-week session, etc. Students who wish to produce more than 25 medium pieces each session will be charged an additional firing fee per cubic inch. INDEPENDENT 2-D STUDIO Designed as independent studio time for 2-D artists to pursue their own projects during day, evening and weekend hours when classes are not in session. There is no instruction. Students will work on their own watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel, colored pencil, and mixed media paintings and projects. Bring your own supplies. Open studio schedule will be posted. Due to limited space, we cannot guarantee storage of supplies and projects.

FUSED GLASS FUSED GLASS SQUARE BOWL SAMPLING WORKSHOP With Jean Marie Mettee Back by popular demand! Learn basic fused glass techniques and create your own fused glass square bowl. Learn stringing techniques for creating a rhinestone bracelet and necklace, and explore steps for wire-wrapping a pair of earrings. GIRLS AFTERNOON OUT: EARRING EXTRAVAGANZA With Jill Rose A girl can never have too many earrings! Grab your best girlfriends and come to Columbia Art Center’s Girls Afternoon Out Earring Extravaganza. You’ll learn basic wire jewelry-making techniques to make a beautiful bounty of earrings while enjoying some light refreshments. No prior jewelry experience necessary. Students also have the option to purchase a basic supply kit for $10 from the instructor at the class. Jewelry pliers and other tools will be provided. MOSAICSMOSAIC MIRROR WORKSHOP With Christina McCleary Explore the basics of mosaic design in this fun workshop. Learn how to cut and position tiles and grout your own design. You will be given a framed mirror, supplies, grout and tiles. Feel free to bring additional beads, ceramics pieces, seashells, broken china or other accents to decorate your work. Your finished project will be ideal for home decorating or to give as a gift. Continuing students are welcome to take the workshop and try new techniques with more advanced designs.

A zine is a publication that is created to tell a story, share thoughts, and/or share drawings or artwork. Join Sarah Matthews in a hands-on workshop where you are encouraged to remix and reinterpret a range of materials using nothing but scissors, glue and a photocopier. At the end of each class, you will learn how to fold, collate, bind and reproduce your very own zines so that they are ready to go for gift giving or for sharing with your friends and family!

Class Policies & ProceduresINCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY In the event of inclement weather, Columbia

Art Center will update its phone message at 410-730-0075 by 8am regarding facility closings

and class cancellations. This information is also available on Columbia Association’s Facebook

page and website.

DISCOUNTS Columbia Art Center programs are offered at two rates: one for those

with CA memberships or Columbia Cards, and the other for non-members. Non-members

who live on CA-assessed property may obtain a free Columbia Card to receive the member

rate for Art Center programs. To obtain a card, visit the Customer and Member Service Center

(6310 Hillside Court). Columbia Cardholders are also eligible for discounts at pools and

other facilities. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia resident

(member or non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to

the Architectural Resource Committee for action.

SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most

classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional

information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon registration.

CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves

the right to cancel any class for any reason. In the event Columbia Art Center must cancel a

class, refund of tuition is guaranteed. Tuition cannot be credited, prorated or refunded after

the first day of class. No prorated tuitions will be given; full tuition is required. If you have any

questions about the content or focus of the class, please contact Columbia Art Center before

the class begins.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY Columbia Art Center has a zero tolerance policy for class

disruption and aggression towards staff, instructors, students and visitors. Any type of aggressive

behavior may be grounds for removal from Columbia Art Center. Columbia Art Center reserves

the right to suspend or terminate class participation and usage of Columbia Art Center for

inappropriate or abusive behavior or class disruption. No credits or refunds will be granted.

Registration & AdmissionAdmission is open to everyone. Advanced registration is required and early enrollment is advised to reserve a space in each class and to avoid possible cancellation. Art displays change regularly. All rental rates include use of kitchen and restrooms. Limited number of tables
