Our goal from the very beginning has been to put on a fantastic jazz and blues festival that celebrates this great music and our city. Beyond the day of the festival itself, we also engage in a variety of music educational support and events year round with local school music programs to help inspire the next generation of musicians.

The Tacoma Jazz and Blues Festival started off in the theater district of downtown Tacoma. As we grew and expanded the festival moved out into the city and now we have expanded the festival to include an outdoor main stage, blocking off the street, outdoor beer garden, music on that stage and in the clubs along the street. The talent includes top regional artists to nationally known artists and the festival is becoming a major destination event.

The Coltrane Home is thrilled that the Third Annual Coltrane Day Music Festival, will be returning to Heckscher Park, Huntington, Long Island, New York this summer. Once again, The Coltrane Home will be partnering with the Town of Huntington Summer Arts Festival and the Huntington Arts Council. Last year’s event left thousands of music and jazz lovers with an unforgettable experience which included a magnificent lineup of music greats, including Roy Haynes, Michelle Coltrane, Randy Brecker, Charles Neville, and many others. Music workshops, from electronic to hip-hop, jazz, funk and blues were part of the extraordinary day. Our first two festivals made clear that nothing brings a community together like music.

Also exciting was the focus on women in music and empowerment of girls and young women, not only with inspiring performances from leading women musicians, but also a special “Girls Only!” workshop, led by music greats Nioka Workman and Mala Waldron.

We hope this year’s event to be even more successful. In addition to building a fine line-up of musicians (to be announced), there will be more child and family-friendly activities, more sponsor, vendor and display booths, and return of the Artist Village, so successful last year. And once again, numerous workshops will be part of the day, culminating in a terrific community jam where young musicians have an opportunity to play on the main stage with supportive professionals.

Our goal is to raise awareness about music giants John and Alice Coltrane, raise funds to restore the Coltrane Home in Dix Hills, fulfill the vision of creating a state-of-the-art Cultural Center and Museum and on site, and support creativity-based music education.

MUSIC IMPROVISATIONImprovising on an instrument is one of the most enjoyable elements of music. These introductory music improvisation classes are for musicians and non-musicians alike, and are designed to be fun, spark imagination and creative expression. No worries about wrong notes permitted. Bring your instruments if you have one, and plan on smiles and laughter.

No formal knowledge of jazz or general music is required. Each workshop limited to 20 participants. Length: 40 minutes.

MUSIC IMPROVISATION 1: Age 5-8. Time: MUSIC IMPROVISATION 2: Ages9-11. MUSIC IMPROVISATION 3: Ages: 12-15MUSIC IMPROVISATION 4: Ages 16-Adult

PERCUSSION IMPROVLimit to 25 each class

PERCUSSION 1 & 2Rhythm is the most basic element of music. This workshop is a fun and creative approach to music using our voice, hands and body percussion to make rhythm and sound and create “conversation”. Led by master percussionist Napoleon Revels-Bay -- who has been working with young people for many years -- this workshop is sure to bring smiles and fun for all. Ages: 8-12 (suggested)

FUNKNothing moves people like Funk or is more fun to play. Funk has its roots in Rhythm and Blues, Blues and Jazz and evolved with a rhythm and groove all its own. Geographically speaking Funk music came from all over the US and the world -- from NY to Philly, Chicago to the Bay area and New Orleans to Texas. Led by Funk veterans and members of one of the great funk bands of Long Island and the New York tri-state area– Funk Filharmonik – participants will learn and play the basic elements of what makes funk “funky” and open a whole new world of fun to their musical universe. Bring instruments and cords. Amps on hand. Audience welcome. Ages: 16 thru adult.

RAP/HIP-HOP & BEATS (2 sessions)Hip-hop music, which began in the Bronx and spread across Long Island continues to explode in popularity. This workshop, led by Bronx-born and now Long Island native Clifton Torres will help build creative writing and other techniques to collectively create a song. “With participation and collaboration we can brainstorm, write, and formulate ideas and lyrics that can then be used to practice performing to a beat or instrumental.” Ages: 9-13Ages: 14-Adult

ELECTRONIC MUSIC (2 sessions)Electronic music is the current rage, and the music of a generation. The Electronic Music workshop, led by Huntington’s own composer/producer and saxman Mikah Feldman-Stein, will cover some different ways of creating and performing electronic music. After a basic introduction to a few of the great common rhythms and styles of electronic music, we’ll discuss how to make and perform them. Then we’re on to a group project with the goal of creating a short piece of electronic music that can be performed collectively. This collaborative activity will involve a combination of computer and live instrumentation, relying heavily on improvisation. Come learn about and explore the amazing world of electronic music with us! Ages 15+:

BLUES WORKSHOP

SONGWRITING WORKSHOPTake part in a creative songwriting workshop led by a group of master songwriters – including Patricia Shih, Toby Tobias, Eric Eaton, Martin Stone and talented up-and-comer Kirsten Maxwell. Details forthcoming! 2 session class followed by performance.

MASTER CLASS WORKSHOPA two session class for advanced young musicians with master musicians. 2 period session followed by short stage performance in the day.

The Story of the Coltrane Home...Nestled in Dix Hills, the Home of one of America’s most important and influential artists – John Coltrane – was spared the wrecking ball thanks to an enormous outpouring of support from music lovers and musicians from around the world, including Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker and so many others. It is the home where Coltrane composed his opus masterwork, “A Love Supreme”, in 1964, considered by many to be one of the most essential compositions of the 20th century. It is also the home where not one, but two essential artists lived – Alice Coltrane, John’s wife, was a tremendous musical force in her own right, recorded her first critical records in the famous basement recording studio, and left a lasting musical and cultural legacy.

The saving of a National Gem. Thanks to the initial efforts of local historian Steven Fulgoni who discovered the plight of the Home, the Town of Huntington purchased the 3.5 acre property, now named Coltrane Park and deeded the home to a not-for-profit, “The Friends of the Coltrane Home” for posterity. Now a landmark, the Home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been designated by the National Trust as one of the “11 Most Endangered Properties in America” – a designation reserved for essential cultural sites.

The Coltrane family, which then included Alice, son and saxophonist Ravi, along with others developed a vision for the Home: to restore the Home, create a cultural center, and establish an outreach center to help support music education and empower young people. The goal, in Alice’s words, “To inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in the making of music, the creative process.”

A tremendous amount has already been accomplished with the Home since that time. The home, discovered in poor condition, has been largely stabilized. A music education program has been developed. Outreach and education through events and programs has extended throughout the region. We are excited to announce shortly, The Alice Coltrane Project, a program modeling Alice Coltrane’s courage and creativity to reach out to and inpire girls and young women through music.

Just fifty years after the creation of “A Love Supreme” we invite you to help the Home realize its important mission and promote the legacies of these two music giants who lived on Long Island. Their legacies include the pursuit of excellence and hard work, embracing diversity, kindness and belief in the innate goodness of people. Particularly now, with music education cuts across the region, and the need to empower young people with essential life skills, foster tolerance and good will greater than ever, the importance of the Home and its mission is clear.
