With many of our students arriving back to campus after the winter break with new devices and tab-
lets, we felt it timely to focus on sharing information regarding technology and safety. With technol-
ogy all around us and constantly changing, it is important for parents and students to stay on top of
how to be safe in our 21st century cyber-world. To better support both DMMS parents and students
we have added multiple articles and links on our webpage to provide you with up-to-date, valuable
safety information. Information includes: How to Set Up Parental Controls on Devices & Comput-
ers, A Parent’s Guide to Social Networking Sites, Preventing & Responding to Cyberbullying, Cell
Phone Safety, A Family Cell Phone Contract and information about a Summer Tech Camp.
Visit our school webpage, under Counseling or click on the link below, and then click on the Internet
& Cell Phone Safety link on the left side.

The Renaissance Movement
Student recognition for many years has tended to focus on top students. Although we
will continue to reward and recognize our top students at Dorothy McElhinney Middle
School, this semester we will broaden our recognition program to include students who
have taken action to improve our school. The students do not necessarily have to be top
students, but must clearly have made a difference on campus. This broader form of
recognition has been practiced in some local middle and high schools for several years.
Later this month, 2/7 we will hold our first Renaissance Rally which will be engaging
and student centered. The Renaissance Rally will be held in place of the traditional
Honor Roll assembly later this month. Students will be presented with Honor Roll
certificates by administration in their first period classes.

ATTENTION 6th
GRADE PARENTS!
AB354 Requires Tdap Shot for 7th
Graders
All students entering, advancing or transferring into 7th grade will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough
booster immunization (called “Tdap”) before starting school. This requirement applies to all public and private
schools. The requirement was signed into law in 2010.
In 2010, California experienced its worst outbreak of pertussis in more than half a century, with more than 9,000
confirmed cases and 10 infant deaths. The immuniza"on requirement is intended to help reduce the spread of
whooping cough among California’s youth. Most children are fully protected prior to entering kindergarten
because of the DTaP vaccine, a vaccine made for younger children. However, protec"on to these diseases wears
off and preteens and teens may be at risk for catching this dangerous disease without a booster.
The Tdap requirement affects all incoming 7th
grade students in California, so it’s important to avoid the back-
to-school rush and to get our children vaccinated now. Tell other parents with children in the 6th
grade about
the requirement and encourage them to schedule the shot early, before summer. Your incoming 7th
grade
student WILL NOT be able to register without proof of the Tdap booster, so get it early and avoid any delays
in registraon!
Remember, in addi"on to the Tdap booster, there are several important vaccines recommended for preteens
and teens including the meningococcal vaccine, a second chickenpox shot (if they never had chickenpox
disease), and the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine series. Everyone older than six months old is recommend-
ed to receive a seasonal flu vaccine.
The California Department of Public Health and the California Department of Educa"on have been working
collabora"vely on this important measure. Informa"on on the Tdap requirement, including informa"on on
where to get free or low cost vaccines, forms, and FAQs are available at www.ShotsForSchool.org.
