AimsAims

• Understanding Colourful Semantics

• To gain information about this approach and what it can be used for

What is Colourful Semantics?

• An approach founded by Alison Bryan

• Aimed at helping children develop their grammar but it is routed in semantics (the meaning of words)

• Reassembles sentences by cutting them up into their thematic roles and colour coding them (good for visual learners)

Why use Colourful Semantics? Why use Colourful Semantics?

• Encourages wider vocabulary• Making sentences longer• Helps answer questions or generate responses to questions• Use of nouns, verbs, prepositions and adjectives• Improves story telling skills• Can be transferred to written sentences• and written language comprehension

• Can be carried out individually or in small groups

The Colour Coded SystemThe Colour Coded System

• Introduce each component separately starting with WHO • Introduce the WHO sign (see www.makaton.org • Do not move onto next one until child consistently understands WHO• Introduce the symbols• Encourage use of the ‘little’ words e.g. The man, A dog is…

• WHO is the subject – names of people and animals

Page 6: Colourful semantics training - I.T.S

• Introduce the DOING sign (see www.makaton.org)

• Look at a range of photos and pictures of people doing actions

• Introduce the colour (yellow)• Introduce the (WHAT) DOING symbols• Use the sentence strip to generate WHO

(WHAT) DOING sentences

Page 7: Colourful semantics training - I.T.S

• Introduce the WHAT sign (see www.makaton.org)• Look at a range of photos and pictures of people

doing actions to objects• Introduce the colour (green)• Introduce the WHAT symbols• Use the sentence strip to generate WHO +

(WHAT) DOING + WHAT sentences

Page 8: Colourful semantics training - I.T.S

• Introduce the WHERE sign (see www.makaton.org)• Look at a range of photos and pictures of places• Introduce the colour (blue)• Introduce the WHERE symbols• Use the sentence strip to generate WHO + (WHAT)

DOING + WHAT sentences

Page 9: Colourful semantics training - I.T.S

• Introduce a picture which requires the child to use all parts of the colour coded sentence

• E.g. The man is eating in the kitchen

GeneralisationGeneralisation

• Generalise Colourful Semantics to everyday life• Use throughout the curriculum• Reinforce during literacy• Model sentences using the framework• Questions and Answers• Look at photos from home and identify the key

components to produce grammatical sentences using the sentence strip
