A Resurrection Kinda Life A Survey of the Book of Colossians(II)

Last time, we were in Colossians 1-2 and we saw that the Apostle lift us

into the throne room of heaven as we saw The Risen Christ. We saw in particular three huge points:

    1. The Person of Christ [1:15-23] 2. The Ministry We Have as Believers in Christ [1:24-2:7] 3. The Danger of False Teaching About Christ [2:8-23]

We covered a lot of ground and all that was necessary, because in this

study, we will build on that foundation to consider The Risen Life.

Why do I call these two short chapters The Risen Life?

    Colossians 2:12

Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with himthrough the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him

    from the dead.

We've been raised with Christ! Just as we have the righteousness of Christ(2 Cor 5:17-21), we also have the same resurrection life He has by the Spirit(Romans 8:11)

And so, in chapter 3, Paul starts us off with a call to get on the resurrection

    program:

The Command to Live the Risen Life v. 1-2 The Cause for Living the Risen Life v. 3 The Crown for Living the Risen Life v. 4

So there's a command to live in the resurrection's power, because we'vebeen identified with Christ in His death and resurrection and the reward

awaiting us in the end is the glorious day when we'll be with Christ. BUT what does the risen life look like?

    1. The Risen Life Affects Our Personal Conduct

    2. The Risen Life Affects Community

    3. The Risen Life Affects Our Speech

    4. The Risen Life Affects Our Friendships

The Risen Life Affects Our Personal Conduct [3:5-17]

The Apostle talks about two areas in which our conducts needs to bebrought in line with the resurrection programme:

    A. The Lust of the Flesh fornication, uncleanness, passion, evildesire: those things which spring from the desires of the fallennature

    B. The Love of the World covetousness and idolatry: those thingswhich spring from the desires of the fallen nature to be accepted bythe world

Both these elements are called out by the Apostle John:

    1 John 2:15-17

15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 Forall that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the

eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he thatdoeth the will of God abideth for ever.

These things incur the wrath upon those who are unbelievers (3:6-7).

Just what is the wrath of God:

    Romans 1:18

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all

    ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth inunrighteousness;

    Ephesians 5:6

Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these thingscometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

God's wrath is not the idea that God is some off-the-handle guy with thetemper to end all tempers. Rather it is God's justified displeasure atanything and anyone who dare challenge His holiness.

Since that wrath is both a future and a present reality for the people of thisworld yet God, through His Gospel, has delivered from us from that, howdo we then walk?

    1. Walk distinct from those in the world because of who you are inChrist v.5-11

    2. Walk in the light

    1. Walk carefully

    2. Walk wisely

That walk isn;t lived out on its own its lived out in community.

The Risen Life Affects Community [3:18-4:1]

Every Christian lives in two communities: The Church the community of saints The Church the community of blood

And as people on the resurrection programme, the resurrection life affectsboth the church and the home v.15

TO THE CHURCH: We live in a:

    1. Word-based community v.16a

    2. Worshipping community v.16b

    3. Thanksgiving community v.17

    TO THE FAMILY:

    1. Wives are to lovingly submit to their husbands v.18

    2. Husbands are not dictators, but are to love their wives v.19

    3. Children are to obey and honour their parents v.20

    4. Fathers are not to use their authority to provoke or vex their children v.21

    5. Employees are to serve their employers as though they work for the Lord v. 22-25

    6. Employers are to remember they are under authority and so bemindful of how they trust their employees 4:1

The Risen Life Affects Our Speech [4:2-6]

Jesus spoke of how what we say is a reflection of the heart:

    Matthew 12:34

O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

And Paul starts with the heart first v. 2-5

As believers, our speech is to be (v.6):

    1. Gracious

    2. Wise3. Able to answer anyone at any time

The Risen Life Affects our Friendships[4:7-18]

We won't exposit these concluding words, but as we wrap up, see how Paulcares for those relationships in his life. Further, see how God, whoinspired the Scriptures, felt we need to know this.
