Forever Free Traveling Exhibit

Jan. 4, 2007 – Feb. 23, 2007 Make your plans to visit the “Forever Free” Exhibit! It is the traveling exhibit of Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation developed by the Henry E. Huntington Library, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and the American Library Association’s Public Programs Office with funding support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. The Aurora Public Library will be the only library in the State of Colorado to receive the exhibit.


The “Forever Free” exhibit provides an opportunity to learn more about President Lincoln, this crucial time in our nation’s history and how it impacts subsequent events and actions. The use of genetic testing in genealogy work has been growing rapidly for the past few years. The testing itself requires specialized equipment and skilled workers. Testing for genealogical purposes became available about the year 2000. The customer doesn’t need to know


how the testing is done, but it is a significant task to interpret the results to genealogical advantage. The range of services available has been expanding rapidly, and with it the customer database has been growing. The size of the database is important because genealogical progress comes from comparing one person’s results with another’s. The number of genealogists who have had these tests done is now in the neighborhood of 100,000.

Genetic genealogy, of course, involves genetics, a complex and rapidly changing field of science. Fortunately, most genealogists don’t actually need to know much about genetics. A similar situation with document-based genealogy is that sometimes it would help to be a lawyer. Another example is with computers where we sometimes wish we had the skill of a computer engineer. The solution in all of these cases is to rely on others to help us through the hard parts. More of a problem than genetics is probably the need for statistics. The information we get is inherently statistical in nature and many people are uncomfortable dealing with uncertain information. A hope for this new workshop is that we will find ways to help each other. There is now a wealth of information relevant to genetic genealogy on the Internet – so much that it is hard to know which part needs attention and which parts can be ignored. In such situations it is helpful to be able to ask someone and point to specific problems. We tend to have different situations and therefore different problems, but it should be possible to find ways help each other.

A Brief Review of the Basics

Genetic testing for genealogy purposes involves either the Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. Only men have a Y-chromosome – it is what makes an embryo develop as a boy. Clearly sons get their Y-chromosomes from their fathers, and most of the time it arrives without change. But changes (mutations) do sometimes happen and they are important to tracking ancestry. When a boy gets a changed (different from his father’s) Y, the change is small, but it is passed on to the boy’s sons. If a father has more than one son, the sons are likely to have very similar Ys. By comparing the mutations it is possible to infer something about how men are related. There are two forms of tests routinely done on Y-chromosomes – they are called STR and SNP. It is not necessary for the genealogist to know what those capital letters stand for. The STR test is most useful for genealogy because the mutation rate is about right for genealogically interesting time frames. SNP mutations have a very low rate. SNPs are being actively investigated as a tool to learn about very ancient (thousands of years) movements of people. In special cases they can be used to indicate relatedness in genealogically interesting times. Y-chromosomes have a few genes controlling male specific things like sperm production. The main function of a Y-chromosome is simply to cause maleness. Both the STR and SNP tests measure properties which no longer have a function. They are just copied along with everything else when a sperm is created. Mitochondrial DNA has thousands of copies in each cell, and they are essential for life. The sperm cells are too small to carry so much material, so a child’s mitochondria comes from mom. When following the mutations in this form of DNA,


the female line of inheritance is all that matters. From a genealogical point of view this form of testing has the problem that the mutation rate is low and it is mainly used for looking at ancestors thousands of years ago. What genetic testing is NOT

This form of getting ancestral information is generally unfamiliar and mysterious. It is common to make some fearful associations. First of all, there is no grave-robbing involved. A man’s Y-chromosome disintegrates rather quickly on death. Mitochondrial DNA can survive for several thousand years in suitable circumstances. But it is rare that anybody would want to dig up grandma. Different testing companies have a variety of ways to collect a DNA sample, but unlike a few years ago, none of them use blood. The sample can be easily collected and sent through the mail. Communications are almost all done through the Internet. It is now common in police work to use DNA testing to identify individuals. A few years ago the news media reported conclusions with a statement about how unlikely it would be to have a match just by accident. Now, such tests are regarded as easy and definitive (at least on the TV shows). There is no longer a need for a probability statement, because if two DNA samples “match” then it is “certain” that they came from the same person. The testing for genealogy is nothing like that certain. On the other hand, we have the ability to look far back in time. Another common form of genetic testing is the “paternity” test. This kind of test works as well for mothers, but normally everybody knows who the mother of the child is. In favorable circumstances this form of testing can be extended to grandparents, but that is about as far as it can go. Every ancestor contributes to the genetic soup

and after a few generations the puzzle is too complicated. The Y-chromosome and mitochondrial DNA both come from only one parent so the mixing is not a problem, but testing does not identify either parent with certainty. What can be accomplished by genetic testing?

Some folks hope that genetic testing can remove the need for all those hours at the archives. It falls short of that, but what it can do is provide a peek over the proverbial brickwall. Sometimes, it is possible to bolster a shaky genealogy, or perhaps help find that distant cousin who has already worked out your ancestry. Where it is possible to test a large number of men with the same surname, it is useful to be able to divide them into groups representing different origins of the name. For instance, with some luck it might be possible to cleanly distinguish the New York Byrds from the Virginia Byrds. Interpretation of the genetic data can be quite tricky, but it is a team sport. We don’t all have to be good at everything.

A new service was recently found by CIG member Barbara Walker. OnePage Genealogy prints pedigree charts on one sheet of paper. Barbara cannot say enough good things about them. She received her first “OnePage Genealogy” chart in less than a week. Ordering a chart is a 3-step process:

Step 1: You will need a GEDCOM of your family. A GEDCOM is a file format that holds genealogical information. All family history programs allow you to export your genealogy to GEDCOM, usually by using an Export command commonly found in the File menu.

Terry Quirke Wins NGS Award

At the February CIG workshop meeting, The

Master Genealogist user group was pleased to

have Terry Quirke as their speaker. Terry

recently won the 2006 Award for Excellence:

Genealogy and Family History Book by the

National Genealogical Society. Terry’s book,

Quirke Genealogy and Family History of

Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland; India,

New Zealand, England, Australia, South Africa

and the United States begins in 1787 with

Michael Quirke of County Tipperary, Ireland.
