For many holiday shoppers, Black Friday marks the official kickoff to the gift-buying season, but the following day, November 28, is Small Business Saturday, and can be a more satisfying way to shop for gifts for loved ones.
At a time of year where big box retailers offer deep discounts, this annual opportuni-ty to show local businesses your support is also a great way to score unique items while benefitting the local economy.
Here are some retail trends and other things to consider as you shop at your fa-vorite small businesses.
The Local Economy
By supporting small businesses, you are supporting local job creation. In fact, small
Go shopping this Small Business Saturdayfirms accounted for over three-fifths of the new jobs created between 1993 and mid-2013, according to government statistics. With the National Federation of Indepen-dent Business (NFIB) and American Ex-press reporting that $14.3 billion was spent with independent retailers and restaurants on Small Business Saturday in 2014, spend-ing your holiday shopping budget locally strengthens Main Street and can help your community’s economy thrive.
New Technologies
A common stereotype of mom and pop stores are that they are antiquated and overpriced, but many small businesses are adopting new technologies to streamline their operations; which can be an important
consideration for shoppers in a hurry or on a budget.
For example, new Android based point of sale terminals, such as the ergonomi-cally designed V-R7000 and V-R7100 from Casio have widescreen LCD touch panels, and an intuitive, high-resolution interface for faster sales and fewer transactional snafus. For instance, these terminals come equipped with a battery to protect memory data in the event of a power failure, and of-fer efficient store operations by eliminating common hardware problems experienced with PC based hardware.
Such information terminals are helping to transform retail management by offering small businesses a chance to better compete against their big box counterparts.
Exclusive Items
Make a splash with one-of-a-kind and un-forgettable gifts this season. From the gift shop with handmade crafts made by neigh-borhood artisans to the bookshop selling the works of local authors, shopping at small businesses means encountering items on sale that you won’t find elsewhere.
If you are shopping for someone who seemingly has everything, going local can help you get inspired.
Consider doing your holiday shopping a bit differently this year, by making a point of supporting small, local businesses on Small Business Saturday and beyond.

On Thursday, Dec. 3, after school, children in the area will be treated with free pizza and pop at the King and Proud Roadhouse, Oregon, MO, courtesy of Chamberlain Funeral Home. Will Stuck, well-known storyteller from St. Joseph, MO, will entertain, and then Santa will arrive at 5 p.m. Picture This by Sheila will capture the images.
According to his website, Will Stuck has worked in the public library set-ting for more than two decades. The last fifteen of those years have been spent working in Children's Services. His work isn't limited to the youngest library pa-trons. He plans and performs programs for preschoolers through senior citizens both in the library and throughout north-west Missouri. Will frequently is invited
to speak to groups of parents, teachers and childcare workers on "Growing Life-long Readers".
Oregon’s 26th anniversary of Christ-mas Around the Square titled “Away in the Manger” has something for everyone and begins at 9 a.m. that morning, Thurs-day, Dec. 3. Christmas music from the

courthouse speakers sets the mood with a variety of vendor booths set up in two locations. The popular Adelpha Cookie Walk and nativity sets on display will be located in the Holt County Museum and Research Center. The annual historic themed collectible Christmas ornament will be sold at the T.J. Hall Building.
South Holt carolers around town and hot chocolate at the Oregon Library Open House will set the mood, while a soup and chili lunch to raise funds for the Or-egon pool and a pulled pork supper pre-pared by ACE Club will fill the stomach. Surrey rides around the square courtesy of OFM begin at 5:15 p.m., with the cel-ebration ending with Candles and Carols at the Christian Church at 7 p.m.
Prior to the event, visit Oregon busi-nesses, banks, offices, courthouse and restaurants to enter in drawings for mer-chandise and services. During the event, $10 vendor dollars will be drawn at 10 a.m., 12 p.m,, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.. Those dollars must be spent at one of the ven-dor booths that day. Entrants must be present to win.

BE SURE TO VISIT US FOR YOUR CHRISTMAS GIFT NEEDS!
It is not the holiday season until homes, stores and town centers are decorated in lights and tinsel. When entire neighbor-hoods are enhanced by bows and animated figurines, the celebratory tone is set and decorations can trigger happy feelings as-sociated with holiday gatherings.
Some people find holiday decorating enjoyable and eagerly anticipate taking out storage containers and sorting through all of their memory-laden trinkets, while others are less enthusiastic about ready-ing their homes for the season. No matter which group you fall into, the following are some simple tips to make holiday decorat-ing easier.
• Plan to decorate on a day when you do not have any other responsibilities. Choose to decorate on a day when you can devote your full attention to decorating, avoiding a day when you might be distracted by other things. If you prefer to decorate alone, ask
a friend to watch the kids or have a spouse take them out of the house for a few hours. If decorating is a family event, find a day when everyone’s schedules are clear.
• Take out the decorations the day prior. Hauling boxes and containers from the at-tic or basement can take a while. Take some time to move all of the decorating items to a main floor of the house the day or night before your decorating marathon. This way you won’t get discouraged or tired by the task even before the real decorating has be-gun.
• Put the tree up first. The Christmas tree is the a focal point of holiday decorations, so set up the tree and decorate it before you get started on decorating the rest of the house. If you do not get to all of your other decorating, at least the tree will be ready and your home will still have some holiday ap-peal. Once the lights are on, decorating the tree is a great activity for keeping the kids
Follow a fewstrategies to
make easy work of holiday
decorating.
Make holiday decorating easier this year
busy while you handle other jobs.• Divide and conquer. Nothing makes
holiday decorating go faster than delegat-ing decorating tasks. Assign specific tasks to your helpers. Put one person in charge of decorating the living room while another handles the outside lights, wreaths and in-flatable items.
• Turn on the tunes. Working to music frequently takes your mind off of the work and will help pass the time more quickly. Have your favorite holiday playlist at the ready and turn up the volume. Sing along to the carols or contemporary songs while you
are elbow-deep in decorations.• Take some breaks. Working hungry or
tired may lead to sloppy work or frustra-tion. There’s little chance of untangling a knot in the lights with your patience in tact if you haven’t eaten for hours. Plan some time for lunch while you sit and rest. Survey the work you’ve done and make a list of the next steps.
After the hard work of decorating, you’ll likely have a sense of accomplishment. Now it’s time to enjoy the holiday scene and prepare for the excitement of the weeks ahead.
