Dear Friends of GW Athletics: Select company, the NCAA Tournaments are. The men’s tourney is 65 schools, the women’s tourney is 64. And more than 300 colleges and universities field Division I teams. Of course, large state universities, with equally-large budgets, dominate the tourna- ments’ landscape. Then there are schools such as GW: private rather than public, smaller in enrollment, eager to excel in both men’s and women’s basketball, well-coached and highly competitive. GW was one of just nine private universities in the nation to see both its men’s and women’s teams qualify for spots in the 2007 NCAA Tournaments. Others to do it this season? Duke, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, Gonzaga, Belmont, Oral Roberts, Marquette and Stanford. Pretty nice company. Our administration and, indeed, fans are proud of our teams and their coaches, Karl Hobbs and Joe McKeown, and their hard-work- ing assistants for achieving such good things for a third straight season. And how about reaching the 20 victory plateau? The men did it this year for the third straight time, a first for their program. The women have now done eight straight seasons. 1940Basketball’s Arnold (Red) Auerbach ofWashington, legendary coach of the BostonCeltics, died last Oct. 28 at the age of 89.Just three days before his death, Auerbach, aNavy veteran, received the Lone Sailor Awardfrom the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington.
