aspectacularvarietyof

featuresandactivitiesfor

parkvisitors.Acquiredin

1965,this685-acrefacility

includesscenicfrontageonboththehistoricDelaware

andRaritanCanalandtheMillstoneRiver.Recreation

facilities,prize-winninghorticulturaldisplays,and

pristinenaturalareasarespacedamidthebroadlawns

andpondsofthisdiverseSomersetCountypark.

LocatedwithinColonialParkisSpookyBrookGolf

Course;an18holechampionshipcoursewhichoffers

awideopenlayoutwithspaciousfairwaysandgreens.

ColonialParkofferstwo

picnicareasavailableby

reservationtogroupsof

50peopleormore.The

KnobHillpicnicareacan

accommodateupto150

people,andislocatedjust

offthemainparkdrivenearaplaygroundandother

familyrecreationfacilities.ThePineGrovepicnicarea

canaccommodateupto250people,andisadjacentto

asoftballfield.Additionalpicnictablesandgrillsarelocatedthroughouttheparkforuseonacasualbasis.

TheMorganPellowskiplaygroundfeaturesinnovative,

barrier-freeequipment.

A1.4milefitnessparcourseislaidoutalongapaved

pathusedbywalkers,joggers,andbicyclists.There

arefourpondsinthepark.EachyeartheNJState

DivisionofFishandWildlifestocksSpookyBrook

pond,offeringanglersofallagesprimefishing

locations.Asoftballfieldisavailableforcasualuse

friendlyballgames,aswellasbyreservationtoleagues

andtournaments.Inwinter,ice-skatingandcross-

countryskiingareofferedwhenweatherpermits.

ThePuttingCourseisa

challengingfamilyfunactivity,

whichoffersplayersfairways

from25to70feetlongin

naturallylandscapedwaterand

gardensettings.ThePutting

Courseisfullyaccessibleto

accommodateplayerswith

physicaldisabilities.Thepopular

paddleboatsarelocatedonPowderMillPond,andare

availableforrentforacruisearoundthewater.Aboat

withhandpedalsisavailableforpersonswithlimited

mobility.

Eightall-weathercourtsare

availableatthetenniscenter

forclasses,leagues,varsity

competitions,aswellas

walk-onmatches.

ColonialParkshorticultural

derGootRoseGardenoffersaformaldisplayofmore

than3,000roses.Theformalgardenisadjacenttoa

5.5acreArboretumthatcontainslabeledspecimensof

floweringtrees,evergreens,shadetrees,andflowering

shrubs.TheFragranceandSensoryGardenisdesigned

toencouragevisitorstolook,

touch,andsmellplantsthat

areeasilyaccessible.The

PerennialGarden,centered

aroundagazebo,isafour-

acregardenandapopular

siteforweddingceremonies.

Dogsandtheirownersvisitthe

threeacrefencedleash-freearea

inwhichdogsarefreetoroam

andplay.Thisleash-freeareais

locatedoffofMettlersRoadand

isaccessedviathesamedriveway

astheSpookyBrookGolfMaintenancearea.For

TheLoisHoweNatureTrailisaremnantoftheoak,hickory,and

beechforestswhichcharacterized

thisareainthepast.Amaintrail

andseveralsmallerbranchtrails

leadvisitorsintoareasrichin

variedplantandanimallife.Trees

andwaterareasprovidehabitatforbirdsandanimals,

andwildflowersbloomamongthelowfoliageonthe

forestfloor.TheareaaroundPowderMillPondisa

wildliferefuge,withtrailsandblindsdesignedsothat

visitorsmayobservewildlifeintheirundisturbed

settings.Woodedareasandopenfieldscompletethe

richvarietyofnaturallandscapeinColonialPark.
