• After a 14-year struggle, during which time Simón Bolívar's Venezuelan troops won the battle of Boyacá in Colombia on Aug. 7, 1819, independence was attained in 1824.

• Bolívar united Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, and Ecuador in the Republic of Greater Colombia (1819–1830)

Colombia: Historia

• In 1899, a brutal civil war broke out, the War of a Thousand Days, that lasted until 1902.

• The following year, Colombia lost its claims to Panama because it refused to ratify the lease to the United States of the Canal Zone. Panama declared its independence in 1903.

Colombia: Geografía

• Colombia is bordered on the northwest by Panama, on the east by Venezuela and Brazil, and on the southwest by Peru and Ecuador.

• Colombia stretches over approximately 1,140,000 sq. km (439,735 sq miles), roughly equal to the area of Portugal, Spain, and France put together.

• Colombia has the longest

coast on the Caribbean sea (1,000 miles).

Colombia: La comida

• Medellin and Antioquia are known for the Bandeja Paisa. A huge concoction of arepa, ground beef, beans, rice, avocado, an egg and chicharron.

• Another dish that is tamale. A chicken or pork, carrots, peas and corn flour. The ingredients are wrapped inside a palm leaf and steam them very gently for several hours.

• Other examples of typical Colombian food include empanadas, corn flower pies filled with ground beef or potato, onion, tomato, salt, garlic and cilantro that is used extensively here.

• The music of Colombia is an expression of Colombia culture which contains diverse music genres, both traditional and modern.

• Cumbia is a mixture of Spanish, Native Colombia and African music.

• Porro is a musical style and dance from the Caribbena region of Colombia. It is a Colombian cumbia rhythm that developed into its own sub-genre. It is played mostly by brass bands or orchestras and danced in couples.

• Every month of the year, the country of Colombia offers at least one major festival. Such festivals also highlight Colombia’s complex national fabric, such as the cultural influences of the Spanish, Africans and indigenous people.

• Iberoamerican Theatre Festival takes place in the capital city of Bogota every two years, typically during the months of March or April. The festival usually runs for 17 days and draws approximately 2 million visitors.

• Rock al Parque is an annual rock music festival held every year in Bogota. The largest rock festival in Latin America.

• Festival Internacional de Cine de Cartagena held every February or March, The International Film Festival of Cartagena remains the oldest Latin American film festival, dating back to 1960. The festival lasts for one week, featuring both traditional and open-air screenings.

• The annual Bogota International Book Fair runs for two weeks, drawing an estimated 400,000 visitors. Typically held in April or May, the festival dates back to 1988. The event plays host to vendors, authors, journalists and publishers, often highlighting more than 100,000 different titles.

• The Hay Festival began in Wales before expanding to other countries around the world, including Cartagena, Colombia. The four-day cultural festival celebrates literature, poetry, art and music.
