We are pleased to feature local desert resident MarkWoodforde and his doubles partner, Todd Woodbridge, akathe “Woodies,” on our cover. Both received the PhilippeChatrier Award, highest honor of the International TennisFederation (ITF), presented at the 2014 ITF WorldChampions Dinner on June 3. The award, named for theformer player and ITF president, was introduced in 1996and is awarded each year for outstanding contributions totennis. Woodforde and Woodbridge become the firstdoubles team to receive the award, joining fellow Australianrecipients Rod Laver, Margaret Court and Neale Fraser. PastU.S. winners include Martina Navratilova, John McEnroe,Billie Jean King and Chris Evert.

The Woodies formed one of the greatest doublescombinations in the history of tennis. Together they won 11Grand Slam titles and five straight Wimbledon trophies. They also won Olympic gold in Atlanta in 1996 and silver inSydney in 2000. Woodforde retired in 2000 with 67doubles titles, 61 with Woodbridge. The only one of his 12doubles majors that he didn’t win with Woodbridge was hisfirst — the 1989 U.S. Open, which he won with JohnMcEnroe.

Woodforde’s left-handed baseline play withWoodbridge’s quick ref lexes at the net led them to theirinduction in the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame in 2010.

Accepting the Philippe Chatrier Award, Woodforde, who called it an unexpected honor, said, “I’m moved sodeeply that Todd and I will be joining such grand championsand following in the footsteps of the other Aussies to receivethis accolade.”

Woodforde is a resident of Mission Hills Country Club inRancho Mirage, California. He continues to coach and is alsostill involved in broadcasting. Learn more about this tennisgreat starting on pg. 12.

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the latest on golfin the desert in this issue, most notably the lack of interest bycorporations in the sponsorship of the former Kraft NabiscoChampionship. Word currently is that the LPGA and IMGMedia will split the expense for the 2015 event if they are notable to secure a new title sponsor. Many thought that KiaMotors might step in; however, the company’s sponsorshipof the Kia Classic at Aviara Golf Club in Carlsbad, California, will stay in place. There is still hope that the LPGA will find asponsor to keep this event at Mission Hills Country Club fora long time to come.

Additionally, many desert residents and golfers are upsetby major changes to Tour events in the Coachella Valley. Astournaments opt out of celeb-am formats, there’s a questionas to whether Tour professionals are a big enough draw ontheir own. Lacking the glitz, glamor and entertainmentvalue supplied by celebrities, for example, is the $30,000price tag for participating in the Humana Challenge toohigh?

Only time will tell if these events are shooting themselvesinto oblivion. We all hope the celebs and the entertainmentcome back!

Since retiring, tennis doubles legend and Rancho Mirage resident Mark Woodforde hasserved the industry as a commentator, coach and tournament director. In honor of his

continuous commitment to the sport, the International Tennis Federation recentlypresented him the Philippe Chatrier Award.

Every now and then a special occasion arises in a person’slife, leading him or her to pause momentarily, ref lect onpast achievements and reap the rewards of years of hardwork.

For 17-time Grand Slam champion Mark Woodforde, one halfof “The Woodies,” arguably the greatest doubles partnership of alltime, three occasions stand out in particular: the days in which hewas inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the SportAustralia Hall of Fame and the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame.

But his most recent recognition – the Philippe Chatrier Award, renowned as the International Tennis Federation’s highest honor –is held in the same regard as his Hall of Fame inductions.

“When I was notified about the honor, it blew me off my feet,”says Woodforde. “To be recognized for my results on the tenniscourt, as well as my services to the game, led me to stop and think,‘You’re kidding me, right?’”

The 48-year-old Woodforde, along with his longstandingdoubles partner, Todd Woodbridge, received the award on Tuesday,June 3 at the ITF World Champions Dinner, held at Paris’s Pavillond’Armenonville, in the midst of the 2014 French Open.

“The Woodies” became the first doubles team in history to beacknowledged as Philippe Chatrier Award recipients. They alsojoined Rod Laver, Margaret Court and Neale Fraser as the onlyother Australians honored with the award, named after the formerpresident of the International Tennis Federation and presentedevery year since 1996.

“I have been to a number of World Champions Dinners in thepast and watched as the Philippe Chatrier Award was handed outto some of tennis’s greatest players,” Woodforde continues. “Notever did I think we would be honored like that someday.”

Although Woodforde and Woodridge may have been surprisedby the honor, no one else within the tennis world was. After all, thepartners captured 11 Grand Slam men’s doubles titles, 61tournament victories and an Olympic gold medal in 1996, all whilecompiling a 508-137 career record. Winners of all four Grand Slamtitles, “The Woodies” remain the only men’s partnership in theOpen era to win five consecutive Wimbledon championships.

But the Philippe Chatrier Award is not only presented to tennisprofessionals based on their career accolades alone; it alsocelebrates long-term, dedicated service to the sport on and off thetennis court.

Since retiring in 2000, Woodforde has worked for Australia’sChannel 9, Fox Sports Australia, and BBC Radio 5 live as acommentator, sharing his knowledge and insight at each of theGrand Slam tournaments. He has also served as the co-tournament

director of the South Australian Open and has established theWorld Tennis Challenge, a tennis exhibition held in Adelaide,Australia, which attracts former and current tennis professionals.

In addition, he has coached tennis professionals, from NovakDjokovic, ranked world No. 1 since winning at Wimbledon by theAssociation of Tennis Professionals, to Marinko Matosevic,Australia’s second-highest ranked tennis player. His leadershipskills have also been utilized in team settings, while serving as thecoach of Australia’s Fed Cup team and captain of Australia’s JuniorDavis Cup team.

“Each of these roles allows me to remain active in tennis, whilealso having enough free time to be at home with my wife andchildren,” says Woodforde. “I love what I’m doing.”

A 24-year resident of Rancho Mirage,California, and a member of Mission HillsCountry Club, Woodforde was firstintroduced to the Palm Desert area afterparticipating in the Indian Wells Masterstennis tournament in the late 1980s. Herealized that he needed a home base in theUnited States and decided to purchase acondo at Mission Hills a few months afterhe captured the 1989 U.S. Open men’sdoubles championship with his formerpartner, John McEnroe.

“I was mesmerized by the weather, country clubs and location near LosAngeles,” Woodforde says. “Not tomention, it was a hotbed for tennis playersas Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, andPete Sampras were members. I wasespecially hooked when I learned RodLaver lived nearby.”

When he is not broadcasting orcoaching, he can often be found at MissionHills’ water park playing with his children,or frequenting some of his favorite RanchoMirage restaurants.

“The River provides plenty of dining andentertainment options, including movies, which my family and I enjoy,” Woodfordesays. “I’ll try anything, really, thanks totraveling the world. No Da Te is my favoriteJapanese restaurant—hands down—whileJohannes Restaurant offers the bestschnitzel outside of Austria and Germany.”

Although he treasures every momenthe spends with his family in RanchoMirage, he doesn’t expect to retire from thetennis industry anytime soon. In fact, heintends to maintain his current schedule.

“I love travelling to commentate at allfour Grand Slams, to coach Tour playersand to mentor the Junior Davis Cup team,”he says. “My passion for the game has ledme to remain involved in the game today –as a commentator, tournament directorand so forth. That passion will likely neversubside.”

No matter what happens from this point with thetournament that was the Kraft-NabiscoChampionship, it is clear that the first, long, gloriouschapter to that story has been written—and the page

turned. Kraft Nabisco’s run as sponsor of the LPGA Major endedwith the final putt of the 2014 tournament.

From the days of the 1972 Colgate-Dinah Shore Winner’sCircle offering an unheard of $110,000 first-place check, sales andmarketing were actually calling the shots in terms of sponsorship. Then and for many years a major producer of home-basedproducts had a huge stake in the tournament. In the early days, theColgate-Palmolive sponsorship was not only about getting thecompany’s message through to women across the country, but alsoabout making those women feel like it was behind them. In thiscase, it was backing a major women’s professional golf tournament

in such a way that it would evolve into a major championship.Dinah Shore was a big part of the process in the early years. A

bona-fide Hollywood star whose marketing value had already beenproven, Shore was close to being universally well known and wellliked. While the golf bug didn’t bite Shore until she was in her early50s, her passion for the game of golf, her marketability and thedesert scene laid the foundation for the successful marketing mixin the early 1970s.

The Women’s liberation movement, which bloomed in themid-60s, was well established. Women were generally on the movein society, claiming long-latent rights. They were assertingthemselves professionally and were perceived as being more equalthan ever in life partnerships.

They’d always called the shots at the grocery store, but nowthey seemingly had more input than ever in other family aspects.Women felt socially empowered enough to ramp up theirparticipation in what had always been a man’s sport. Thatmovement, combined with Shore’s star power, desert glamor,Colgate-Palmolive’s financial backing and desire to reach this new, empowered generation of women, created the ideal environmentfor the tournament to f lourish.

As the tournament evolved, so did its format and relationship tothe sponsors. When Colgate-Palmolive moved off the sponsor’s

marquee after the 1981 tournament, Nabisco quickly stepped inwith renewed enthusiasm, an increased purse and lavish vendorgalas. It also perpetuated the relationship between the tournamentand companies that provided products that reached the consumerthrough grocery stores.

For nearly 20 years, through name changes (includingdropping Shore’s name from the title in 2000), ownership changesand even hostile takeovers, Nabisco stuck with the tournament. In2000, the last major change of the tournament’s original form

came when Philip Morris bought Nabisco and combined it with itsKraft Foods division, paving the way for the long relationship withNabisco and grocers to continue. From the tournament’s

beginning in 1972, its main marketingmission was to get sponsor products ongrocery store shelves. And, back in the day, there were many, many grocery outlets toconsider.

In addition to putting on a first-classmajor golf tournament, Kraft Nabisco’smission, and Nabisco’s before that, andColgate-Palmolive’s before that was to getthose grocers to Rancho Mirage everyspring, while many of their stores werecovered with snow, and properly wine anddine them in the swanky SouthernCalifornia desert. Pro-Ams, unlimitedaccess to product samples andhobnobbing with the competitors andHollywood stars during nightly partieswon over many an independent grocer, who left each year convinced that KraftNabisco products should get all the shelfspace they needed.

Over the last three decades, however, the grocery industry, like many othersectors of the U.S. economy, has changedand consolidated dramatically. And thechange has accelerated over the lastdecade. There are now basically fivenational grocery giants (Walmart, Kroger,Albertson’s, Safeway and Costco), with afew substantial regional chains (Winn-Dixie, Food Lion, Piggly Wiggly). Underthe current circumstances, Kraft Nabisco’sparent company, Mondelez, only needs toconnect to the large chains and large

regionals, and it’s the big boys’ purchasesthat typically set the buying plans for thesmaller regional stores and independents. In other words, if Kroger is giving certainproducts plenty of space, smaller chainsand grocers take note and usually makesimilar proportional purchases.

Toss in the global financial disaster oflate 2008 and the resulting period ofcorporate austerity, and Mondelez andKraft Nabisco were soon approaching thebreak-even point related to theirinvestment in the tournament and thebenefit they were receiving for theirsponsorship—particularly whencompared to the grocery-party heyday ofthe pre-consolidation era.

So, as the chapter closes, the moral ofthe story so far is that the changingbusiness climate has had its effect on theKraft Nabisco, or what was the KraftNabisco, Championship. While thepowers that be in the LPGA say they arecommitted to doing whatever it takes tokeep the championship going, at this pointmany questions remain.

One thing, however, is certain:whatever the tournament is in the future,it will be determined in no small way byexternal business forces commanded bythe invisible hand of the world economy.

Professional golfers know that when analysts expect to seetheir name on Sunday’s leaderboard at a major, life is good. And when the analysts expect to see a 19-year-old’s nameon the leaderboard going into Sunday’s round, life is great!

Alexis “Lexi” Thompson quietly works her way around a golfcourse with precision and stealth, portraying a calmness that evenveterans envy. She is tan, slender and fashionable. Her smile hasslyness to it, as if to say, “I might be only 19 years old but I’m here towin!”

And win she has, taking in over $2.5 million in career earningsto this point. Thompson’s story is one of love for the game andconsiderable determination.

Growing up in a family of golfers, Thompson was homeschooled and graduated in 2012. At age 12 she was the youngestgolfer ever to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open. She turnedprofessional in June 2010 at age 15. In 2011, Thompson set a newrecord as the youngest-ever winner of an LPGA tournament.Three months later, she became the second youngest winner onthe Ladies European Tour. And that same year, she became a

member of the LPGA. Then in 2014, she won the Kraft NabiscoChampionship, making her the second youngest women’s majorwinner to date. In total, Thompson has four wins and 19 top-10finishes.

Recently Thompson tied for seventh at the 2014 U.S. Women’sOpen, raising the question: Is she where she thought she would beat this point?

“I always set my goals pretty high as a kid, so I wouldn’t say I’mahead of where I wanted to be, but I’m very satisfied with mysuccess,” she says. “In golf there’s always room for improvement, and I look forward to accomplishing more of my future goals.”

There are other things in life that Thompson wouldn’t mindthe media asking about. “Anything other than golf really—music, leisure activities, family, food, etc.” Thompson’s bucket list includesskydiving, playing a round at Pebble Beach and f lying an F/A 18fighter Jet.

The one question she wishes the media would stop asking heris, “Do you plan on playing on the PGA tour at any time?”Thompson rolls her eyes and leaves it at that.

But she lights up when asked about her family. “I rely on themthe most for just being there for me after every round, whether it’sgood or bad. I know I can go to any of my family members and theywill be there to get me through certain times in my life,” she says.“At the Kraft Nabisco, that whole week was pretty special. To haveboth of my parents there supporting me every day and makinghome-cooked meals was amazing. Jumping into Poppies Pond withvery special people in my life was a moment I’ll always remember.”

Recalling that day she adds, “Having the Marines be ourstandard bearers was very special to me also.”

Born in Coral Springs, Florida, Thompson has yet to have anythoughts of leaving the state, but admits to thinking about movingto West Palm Beach or Jupiter. “Not out of Florida for sure!” shesays. Her favorite team is the Florida Panthers.

While many people are star struck at meeting Thompson thesedays, she is enjoying a few star-struck moments of her own. Onesuch moment was meeting Tiger Woods, and another occurred ona media tour after her first win on the LPGA in 2011, when she metactors Taylor Lautner and Jonah Hill. She doesn’t mention whetherthe celebrities asked her for golf tips.

Because her days are filled with appointments, practice roundsand managers, Thompson is adamant about scheduling familytime as well as time for herself. She clearly has a handle on what istruly important in life. But her lighter side comes into play whenasked who would make up her ultimate foursome.

“Tiger Woods, Michael Jackson and Channing Tatum,” shereplies, f lashing that winning smile.

There are the famous and the not so famous. Then there’sthe person everyone seems to know, causing everyone elsein the room to ask, “Who is that guy, is he famous?” MeetKyle Burton. At 89 years young, he’s a regular at the gym, a

regular around the golf course and every Monday through Fridaysince 1979 he’s a regular at Keedy’s Fountain Grill in Palm Desert,California.

Sitting with his same group of guys every morning with coffee inhand, Burton banters with his friends about world issues, family, whateveryone is doing that day and the game of golf.

If there is one thing Burton knows a lot about, it’s golf. Born in Antioch, Tennessee, Burton and his family soon moved to

Nashville. Times were hard. Burton’s father was a security guardmaking just $17 a week. At the age of 10, Burton got a job as a caddyearning 40 cents for 18 holes plus a dime tip if his player didn’t lose a

ball. Finding clubs here and there, the young caddie had his own setby age 12 and started teaching himself how to play.

It would be fascinating to document Burton’s life year by year, including caddy fights, his time as a boxer, life in the service, playingon the European Tour for nine years, marriage and family. However,we barely have enough space to talk about his friendship with SamSnead and how it all started over a breakfast Snead bought him. Orthe famous players he’s quietly helped with a friendly chat and a fewrequested suggestions. There’s also his job at Spalding and hisprofessional tenure at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

And then there was the career in his late 40s at the famousVintage Club in Indian Wells, California. Enjoying retirement,Burton was convinced by developer Mick Humphreys to move tothe desert to work with Tom Fazio and, ultimately, to become thefirst director of golf at the Vintage Club. From 1979 to 1996, Burtonhelped create this awarding winning facility, was instrumental in the

Vintage Invitational, played golf with presidents and swapped golfstories with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.

Burton is not one to boast about playing golf with PresidentEisenhower, or the honor he received this year at the Vintage Clubfrom Tom Fazio and the community. What he does mention is thathis Vintage membership status is the same as former PresidentGeorge H.W. Bush and that he enjoys driving around Vintage in a golfcart and keeping up with things.

His son has worked at Vintage for 33 years. “He got out of theMarines, I gave him a job and they just kept him on,” Burton says.

The stories Burton tells are fascinating. He uses the phrase “off therecord” often. “I knew probably the best player in the world that noreally knew about,” he says suddenly. “He came out of Europe and hisname was Flory Van Dynck. He won more tournaments that youcan shake a stick at but wasn’t well known because there was another

European player at the time getting all the attention, SeveBallesteros.”

When asked about today’s golf industry, Burton thinks for amoment. “It’s gotten so big, it’s harder for the older person like myselfto understand it,” he says. “It used to have more tradition than there isnow, and I really think that back then the players were morerespectful. But the game itself, there can’t be much change to it. Youstill have to go out and hit the ball; they just hit them a lot farthertoday than we did back then.”

With a glance at his watch, the retiree realizes he has things toattend to, but not before answering one last question: Who wouldmake up his ultimate foursome?

“As long as I’m in it,” he says with a laugh, “ I’d take Jack Nicklaus,Gary Player and Flory Van Dynck.”

Here’s the question: You livein California and you’recontemplating: Which wouldbe the most difficult course toaccess for a round of golf? You’reprobably thinking CypressPoint, Los Angeles CountryClub, The Tradition or TheMadison Club in theCoachella Valley. Good

choices, but you’d be wrong. All ofthose clubs have members who can invite you as their guest.

The answer is actually Sunnylands. “What?” you say. “Where’sthat?” Sunnylands was the home of Ambassador Walter Annenbergand his wife, Leonore. It is a 200-acre estate in Rancho Mirage,California, where the media baron and his wife lived for many years. The estate’s course has seen a few guests since it opened in the early1960s. Among those who played this nine-hole beauty are ninepresidents of the United States including presidents Nixon, Reagan,Obama and both of the Bushes. Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra werealso regular guests. On one occasion, the Queen of England, whostayed with the Annenbergs, took a tour of the golf course.

You may think that a round at Sunnylands is out of the questionand that would be fairly accurate. However, there are regular toursof the estate for the public, which include a cart ride around thecourse. I was fortunate enough to be invited along to view the golfcourse recently.

Sunnylands Golf Course was renovated some three or four yearsago and it is certainly a very good course (by the way, it is possible toplay 27 holes by playing off several different tees).

Although it unlikely to land on the list of Top 100 courses in theworld, it is no slouch. Large, gaping bunkers protect the greens.Sweeping fairways and large established trees, with the occasionallake, set up the ‘eye candy.’ And, no surprise, there is not a divot to beseen!

What is to be seen, however, is acollection of unusual artifacts andsculptures, which are carefully spacedthroughout the course. Close to the firsttee, for example, is the magnificent DelosBench. It was hewn from exquisite whitemarble. It is massive and it is heavy—soheavy, in fact, that it had to be transportedto the grounds by helicopter.

During my tour, our guide pointed outthe Eisenhower palm trees, the only twopalm trees that exist on the golf course. In1966, Walter Annenberg was playing withPresident Eisenhower. The presidentnoticed that there were no palm trees onthe course and commented that he foundthat to be very unusual for a golf courselocated in Palm Springs. The followingweek, two substantial palm trees wereplanted, bordering one of the fairways, which actually added a little more strategyto the hole.

A couple of holes later one comes uponthe Chinese Pavilion. It’s a good place totake a little shade, and I imagine that abutler once provided afternoon tea withfinely sliced cucumber sandwiches in thiscool setting.

On the following hole a striking 30-foottotem pole rises out of the semi-rough, just

short of the green. Apparently it was the work of Henry Hunt,Canada’s first native artist. Moving farther down the course, wethought, “Hello, what’s this? Are we at St Andrews?” The originalarchitect, Richard (Dick) Wilson, had designed a massive doublegreen.

As we approached the end of our tour, I asked our guide if therewere any other unusual features he could point out. He didn’thesitate.

“Yes, sir. Do you see that magnolia tree over on the left of thatfairway? That was a gift from President Nixon.” It actually camefrom a cutting of the magnolia tree on the lawn of the WhiteHouse. The original cutting came from President AndrewJackson’s estate, just minutes away from downtown Nashville. That’s one well-traveled tree!

So, there it is—a whirlwind tour of one of the most exclusivegolf courses in the world. Next time you’re in the Palm Springs area,it is worth taking the time to book one of the tours (just sevenpeople at a time can be accommodated on each cart). These toursare very popular so make sure you do your homework and bookwell in advance.

Is 2014 the U.S. team’s year to win back the Ryder Cup? It’s afeat that has not been accomplished since 2008 at ValhallaGolf Club in Kentucky, and since 1993 in Europe. ReveredGleneagles Golf Club hosts the 2014 Matches, but not on its

fabled James Braid courses. Instead, this year’s Cup will becontested on Jack Nicklaus’ signature parkland layout for bighitters, the PGA Centenary Course, originally named theMonarch’s Course.

Many Europeans are dismayed that the Matches aren’t on oneof Scotland’s famed links.

Initial Matches were played at Gleneagles in 1921, withBritain/Ireland winning 9-3. Seed merchant Samuel Ryder, anardent spectator and golfer, launched the Ryder Cup at tea in 1926.In 1979, with U.S. teams dominating the Matches, Jack Nicklaussuggested changing the format and team selection to includeEurope. Since then, Europe has won nine Matches, America four, and there has been one tie.

On paper, the United States was predicted glory on ArnoldPalmer’s spectacular design at Ireland’s K Club in 2006, and again in2010 at rain-drenched Celtic Manor in Wales. In 2012, theEuropean team prevailed yet again, this time at Medinah CountryClub in Illinois with a sensational Sunday singles win that has cometo be known as the “Miracle of Medinah.”

Needing a turnaround from these losses, the U.S. revised itsstrategy and named Tom Watson 2014 captain. Loved by the Scotsas a native son, Watson brings a depth of unrivaled experience and afocus from a “winning” generation, and he has no fear of doingthings his way to win, as he did in 1993 as captain—the U.S. team’slast victory on European soil. Watson has chosen Andy North andRaymond Floyd as vice captains.

Ireland’s Paul McGinley, Europe’s captain, isn’t a householdname, but he has been a perennial vice captain in the Ryder CupMatches and a victorious captain for many Seve Trophy teams.McGinley also made the winning putt against Jim Furyk at TheBelfry in the 2002 Matches. He has chosen Scotland’s victorious2002 Ryder Cup captain, Sam Torrance, and Ireland’s Des Smyth ashis initial vice captains.

Both captains have three picks, which will be criticalconsidering the multitude of new, young talent available for the 12-man teams. Some Ryder Cup veteran players could be lackingpoints.

Graeme McDowell, whose triumph over Hunter Mahan in2010 secured the Cup, believes competition will be fierce. “There

are going to be two or three guys who miss, quality players,” he says.“McGinley’s wild cards will be very hotly contested. [It will be] atough team to get on, and for America, too.”

Zach Johnson agrees. ”All are grinding. They want to make theteam.”

Is Tiger a lock? Not like before. Potential newbies for the U.S. teamare Jimmy Walker, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed and Harris English.

Europe’s Victor Dubuisson, Henrik Stenson, Jamie Donaldsonand Thomas Bjorn appear in. It’s hoped that Scot StephenGallacher will qualify so McGinley doesn’t need to use a pick.

Retouched by Nicklaus for the Matches, the par-72 PGACentenary Course now stretches 7,243 yards. The 18th holereceived the most changes in preparation for the Matches. “It’s nota very difficult hole. It’s exciting. I’m very proud of it,” Nicklaus says.

Host Europe controls course set-up, which is always critical, butwill be even more so if it’s a “wet” Gleneagles. The European Tour’sJohnny Walker Championships have also been contested hereannually, thus advantage Europe. But, it’s a big-hitters course, andthat gives the U.S. team more advantage.

“Gleneagles is a very unique course, creating a challenge initself,” Arnold Palmer notes. “I think America’s success will dependon how seriously they approach the Matches, if their mentaltoughness equals or betters [that of] the Europeans.”

NBC/Golf Channel Ryder Cup commentator, England’s TomAbbott, says, “The stretch from the par-4 14th on is testing and willbe tough. The par-5 16th is risk/reward and bombers can go for itin two. The 18th is a good finish but isn’t that tough.”

As for Captain Watson, he’s old school. He only wants guys onhis team “with heart and guts.”

Game on at Gleneagles, Sept. 23-28. _________________________________________

Thunderbird Country Clubdoesn’t host a big bi-annual golfshindig or intra-clubcompetition to mark its Ryder

Cup history. But the Matches are never farfrom the minds of the members or the staffregardless of the year or the day.

“We all know when it’s time,” says headgolf professional, Nick DeKock. “TheRyder Cup is always something special forour membership.”

While there are commemorativephotos and other paraphernalia related tothe 1955 Matches played at Thunderbird,

that’s just one of many historic events thathave taken place at the club, the first 18-hole facility to be constructed in theCoachella Valley.

There’s only so much wall and display-case space at the club, and many walls andcases are filled with photos ofThunderbird’s development, when therewas very little else around and Highway111 was a two-lane blacktop. There’sphoto after photo of famous members:Don Hutson, Ralph Kiner, HoagyCarmichael, Phil Harris, Johnny Dawson,Bing Crosby, Desi Arnaz and LucilleBall...the list of Southern California’s mid-century stars who called the club home isextensive and impressive. So much so thatits attachment to Hollywood’s elite mayhave eclipsed the 1955 Ryder Cup as adrawing card for the club.

“We were fortunate enough to play apiece [of video] for our members duringour Phil Harris Member-Guest earlier thisyear, and it was neat for the members to beable to see what life was like here back inthe 50s and 60s,” DeKock says. “If the wallscould talk...”

However, the club did make a dramaticaddition to the grounds earlier this year inhonor of its Ryder Cup past. A new four-sided clock commemorating the U.S. team’s8-4 win over the Great Britain/Ireland teamwas unveiled in the courtyard just outsidethe pro shop, on the footpath from theputting green to the first tee.

Thunderbird benefitted from theexposure and buzz the event generated, asdid the surrounding valley. The relativelylunar location was a striking change of pacefor golfers from both teams, and somehistorians credit the novelty of playing in

the desert as one of the factors that helpedsustain the event when the United Stateswas winning regularly and handily. Thecombination of international exposure, the prestige of hosting the game’s topinternational competition and the fact thatHollywood was in the process of falling inlove with the serenity and seclusion of the

desert came together to makeThunderbird one of Southern California’shottest properties in the 1950s.

Further testimony to the success of the1955 Matches came in 1959; the very nexttime the competition was played in theUnited States, it was contested just downHighway 111 at Eldorado Country Clubin Indian Wells.

The club and competition owe a debtof thanks to Robert Hudson, the Portlandgrocery magnate and Thunderbirdmember who financed the British team’strip to the States for the 1947 competitionat Portland Golf Club, where Hudson wasalso a member. In part because of WorldWar II, the Matches had not been heldsince 1937, and when the Portland Openwas cancelled for financial considerationsin 1947, Hudson moved to have the RyderCup at Portland Golf Club. He arranged forthe British team’s passage to the UnitedStates on the Queen Mary, accompaniedthem on their cross-country train ride toOregon and paid all their expenses.

When the Brits traveled to Pinehurstfor the Matches in 1951, the British PGApicked up their tab. But Hudson wasalready working behind the scenes tobring the event to Thunderbird in 1955,an effort that eventually succeeded.

“The course had just opened in 1951,so it was pretty amazing to have a major

international event just four years later,”DeKock says. “To maintain and preservethe history of that event is vital to the club.”

For golfers, raising money forcharity has never been easier. AtBighorn Golf Club, charity andgolfing go hand-in-hand thanks to

Randall Dee Hubbard (R.D. to his friends),an exceptional chairman and managingdirector who set the bar high on day one.

Opened in 2006 to rave reviews for itsspectacular homes and two championshipgolf courses, Bighorn Golf Club in PalmDesert, California, set out to grab the golfworld’s attention with such events as the

Skins Games, U.S. Senior Match PlayChallenge, Battles at BIGHORN and theLPGA’s Samsung World Championships.

With great success branding the club, and having rendered unforgettablemoments for its members and the world tosee, Bighorn quickly established itself as aviable player in the world of high-end, golf-course living.

Perhaps more impressive is what goes onbehind the scenes, particularly related tofundraising. Bighorn Golf Club Charities, with the full support of Hubbard, hassurpassed all expectations within thecommunity, and the nonprofits on thereceiving end could not be more grateful.

Since its inception in 2006, BighornGolf Club Charities has gifted over $5million in funding in the Coachella Valley. This includes Bighorn BAM (Behind aMiracle), which helps fund breast-cancerprograms, as well as other fundingsupporting education, the arts and thebuilding of the Bighorn Golf ClubCharities Veterans Resource Center atCollege of the Desert for the 400 warriorsattending the institution.

Already boasting staggering numbersfor funds raised and gifted, the charity’sgiving continues to grow as it expands itscommunity program to include a new, grassroots component: giving up to$500,000 annually to qualified nonprofitsin the Coachella Valley. Bighorn Golf ClubCharities developed this program to fundspecific projects of local nonprofitorganizations that demonstrate a need andare making a real difference in the quality oflife for the people they serve. The focus of

the program will be nonprofits that aidvalley children and shelters, and thatprovide assistance for those who require ahelping hand in order to seek a better lifeand a brighter future for themselves, theirfamilies and their communities.

Anyway you look at the tremendoussuccess of this charitable organization, allcart paths lead back to Hubbard, the manwith a mind for success and a heart forgiving.

This is the same man who formed theR.D. and Joan Dale Hubbard Foundation, which is dedicated to providing andimproving educational opportunities forstudents of all ages, and the ShoemakerFoundation, named for legendary jockeyWillie Shoemaker, to help raise funds forhorsemen suffering from catastrophicaccidents or illnesses.

While Hubbard himself is very low keyabout his charitable accomplishments, they did not go unnoticed by the HoratioAlger Association of DistinguishedAmericans, Inc., a nonprofit educationalorganization honoring the achievementsof outstanding individuals and

encouraging youth to pursue their dreamsthrough higher education.

In April 2014, Hubbard was inducted asa member of this prestigious association, joining eleven other outstanding businessand civic leaders from across North Americain receiving this honor. Since 1947, thisannual award has recognized exceptionalleaders—all with a commitment tophilanthropy and higher education—whohave overcome significant personalchallenges to achieve success.

Regarding the award, Hubbardcommented, "It is a wonderful honor to beinducted into the Horatio AlgerAssociation and to be recognized for notonly my professional accomplishmentsbut also the humble beginnings thatshaped my character. I believe in the powerof hard work, determination and havingpassion for what you do in your career. I amproud to become a member of anorganization that not only believes in thosesame principles but helps to instill them inyoung Americans."

With heartfelt emotions from many inthe Coachella Valley who have greatlybenefitted from the generosity of theBighorn Golf Club Charities and Mr. R. D.Hubbard, we salute Bighorn’s ingenuity, congratulate Hubbard on the muchdeserved induction and thank everyoneinvolved for showing the Coachella Valleythat it’s possible to make a difference andhave a heck-of-a-great time doing it. _______________________________

This issue’s golf instruction article comes from the 17th hole onDesert Willow's Firecliff Golf Course, where I spent some timewith Head Professional Ryan Szydlowski. Golfers frequently get insituations where they don't know what type of chip to play ontothe green. This tricky little chip to the side of the 17th hole onFirecliff is a good example.

Ryan will first run you through the chip-and-run option, and I'llcover the lob shot.

Chip and RunI determine where I need to land my ball before choosing a club.

If I have a ridge to carry or a short-sided pin, I’ll use a higher-loft clubto produce more carry and less release. If I have a lot of green towork with and minimal undulation, I’ll use a short iron to get theball rolling like a putt as soon as possible. I selected a 56-degreewedge for this shot because I need to carry the shot over a subtleridge, halfway to the hole. My ball position for this shot is on myback foot and I set up with a slightly open clubface. This allows meto hit the ball first consistently, and the added bounce I create byopening the clubface helps the club get through long roughwithout restriction.

I focus on keeping very soft grip pressure and use my shouldersto execute the chip. During every practice swing, I exaggerate ashort backswing to emphasize accelerating through impact. Ipractice a consistent swing tempo and use different length swingsto control distance.

Setting up with the ball on my back foot helps me hit down onthe ball through impact. I focus on finishing low through impactwith my clubface pointed at the sky. If my hands take over, I riskhitting low shots that are off target. In practice, you can draw a lineon your golf ball and point it down your target line. Most golfers

42 DeSertGolf&tenniS • Summer2014

Page 43: colo may june 06 - desertgolfer.comflip).pdf · Woodforde’s left-handed baseline play with Woodbridge’s quick reflexes at the net led them to their induction in the Australian

don’t realize they line up off target. This drill will help you getcomfortable with a proper setup and square clubface, and it willalso help you learn how your ball reacts to an open clubface.

The  Lob ShotThe first thing I like to do is to break a chip down into sections

or a grid ( 1/3, 1/2, 2/3 ).  This grid helps me establish the landingareas of the clubs I might choose. The lob shot will land at thebeginning of the 1/3 section as soft as possible.

In order to get the ball to land as soft as possible, I will go withmy 60-degree lob wedge. I will grip the club with what mostconsider a very weak grip, with my left thumb positioned slightlyleft of the grooves. With this weak grip, I want to open my stance somy bodyline is angled left of the target. This setup is very similar toa greenside bunker shot.

My backswing will be through a big shoulder turn, and then Ihinge my wrist to "set the club." This hinging in the wrist willactually create a 90-degree angle between the left arm and theshaft.

As I turn slowly back through the ball, I will maintain the hingein my wrist, which will help me get the golf club under theball, maintaining an open clubface. This open clubface throughimpact will help the ball pop out of the greenside rough very highand soft. You can see as I hold my finish how the clubface is angledstraight up into the sky and my body has turned through to thetarget. Using my body as the primary power source will help myarms and hands control the club.

The key is to practice these shots around the greens to get a feelfor how hard to swing through the ball to control your distances.

“There is no doubt that solar adds greatly to the value of a home,as well to the quality of life for those who live there,” says VincentBattaglia, CEO and president of Renova Solar in Palm Desert,California, which provides solar panels for residences andbusinesses. “[Homeowners] not only enjoy the considerablesavings on their utility bill each month, they also have thesatisfaction from using a clean, renewable form of energygeneration.”

CALCULATE THE SAVINGS, LOCATE THE DISCOUNTSTo help calculate the cost of solar for your home relative to the

monthly savings on your electric bill and the ultimate payoff, youwill need to weigh the initial costs and maintenance costs of a solarsystem against yearly savings and home valuation. This will helpyou to decide if the investment in solar is worth the payoff or ifleasing equipment is a more viable option.

An online tool operated by the California Energy Commissioncan help you with the appropriate calculations. It’s available athttp://www.gosolarcalifornia.org/tools/save.php.

You should also check with your city, state, county and localpower companies for incentives or financing programs. The realdiscount is the 30-percent federal tax credit that expires at the endof 2016. It’s a credit against federal tax liability, so whether a personhas the tax appetite or not is a major factor in whether it’s better tobuy or lease.

Good news for homeowners is that lease and finance optionsare expanding according to David Herrlinger of Hot Purple Energy,a solar-energy solutions company in Palm Springs, California. “It’sclear solar still saves you money even with an interest component,so the options will continue to grow,” he says.

In the Coachella Valley, owners can take advantage of a PropertyAssesses Clean Energy loan program to fund home and businessenergy improvements, including solar. The money is loaned to theproperty, not the owner, and is paid as a part of the property tax bill.

SOLAR and YOUR HOME VALUEPart of your decision may come down to determining how

adding solar will increase your home value. Some appraisers are stilllearning how to value solar, but a common formula is 20 times theannual savings. As researchers continue to study data, the resultsare becoming as clear as the sun on a cloudless day. LawrenceBerkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) analyzed data on homeswith photovoltaic (PV) systems from 2000-2009 in the study,“Exploring California PV Home Premiums,” and the results showthat solar boots a home’s resale value. The LBNL report estimatedthat each 1-kilowatt (kW) increase in rooftop solar system size adds$5,911 to a home’s resale value.

“Our analysis offers clear support that a premium exists in themarketplace, thus PV systems have value and their contribution tohome values must be assessed,” states the report. You can readmore at http://emp.lbl.gov/publications/exploring-california-pv-home-premiums.

DO RESEARCH, GET MULTIPLE BIDSOnce you decide that solar energy is cost effective and you want

it, the biggest decision to make is whether to purchase, in essencebecoming your own power plant, or have a company install solarpanels on your roof and retain ownership while you make a fixedpayment each month that will be lower than what you were payingfor traditional energy. There are plusses to both options. Theoption requires no money out-of-pocket because installation is free, while purchasing generates substantially more savings over thelifetime of the system.

Whichever system you choose, using the best equipmentbacked by the best manufacturer is a good way to ensure that thisasset produces the desired energy—and thus savings—for decadesto come. All solar panels and solar leases are not created equal, so it’simportant to shop around. SunPower, for example, a U.S.manufacturer, makes solar panels that deliver 44 percent morepower than conventional panels of the same size. That means fewerpanels on your roof, a more attractive array and room to expand inthe future should you get an electric car.

Saving With Solar—Real-Life Examples

This three-bedroom, two-bath home in Palm Desert, California, features 3,196 square feet of living space as well as a pool and spa. Yearlysavings are estimated to be $7,967, with monthly electric paymentsdropping from an average of $766 to just $102. This purchased system willpay for itself in a little over five years. Using a formula based on thesavings, it can add up to $159,000 to the home valuation, bringing theestimated value of this home from $733,000 to $892,000.

In Rancho Mirage, California, this horse property, with stables, haseight bedrooms, seven baths and 9,554 square feet of living space on nearlyseven acres. Monthly electricity payments were about $2,000. It’s believedthey’ll drop to about $60 because there was room for enough solar to offset97 percent of the electric usage. Yearly energy savings are estimated to beover $24,000, with a payback period of just under six years. This solarpurchase could increase the value of the home by $480,000, to a currentestimated value of $2.5 million.

Page 50: colo may june 06 - desertgolfer.comflip).pdf · Woodforde’s left-handed baseline play with Woodbridge’s quick reflexes at the net led them to their induction in the Australian

Still, you have to do some research and ask questions to determinewhich product and which company is right for your home.

Asking some key questions upfront, for example, will helpensure that the company you choose will do a quality job. First, askfor qualifications, licenses and client references. You can check withthe California State License Board, The Desert ContractorsAssociation and with the North American Board of Certified

Energy Practitioners (NABCEP), which certifies solar installers. Aswith any home improvement, work only with licensed, bondedand insured contractors.

It’s also important to receive multiple bids. Established localcontractors are your best bet as they have relevant and accessiblereferences as well as equipment that is tailored to desert heat. Takeyour time choosing; proper and careful installation is critical ascutting into the roof of your home can have major consequences ifnot done correctly. It would be a shame for all of your savings to godown the drain because of a leaky roof. Of course, reputable solarinstallers utilize techniques such as double f lashing as needed andbring in qualified roofing companies that will offer their ownwarranty for their work.

Solar Energy has proven itself to be reliable and less expensivethan grid energy, but there is no one-size-fits-all approach to sizing asolar system or determining if it’s better to buy or lease. And even ifyou have run the numbers in the past, check them again. Pricing onequipment and installation has dropped dramatically in recentmonths while electric rates continue to rise.

Putting the sun to work for you could just put some green backin your pockets, so why not do a little research to find out? Youmight be pleasantly surprised at what you discover.

The extraordinary reputation ofthe people of Thailand is notexaggerated. From the simplestfarming communities to cities

such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai, Thaipeople are genuinely kind and sincere. Andthey are always smiling. That warmlywelcoming attitude is contagious.

Still considered by some a bit ThirdWorld, Thailand actually enjoys a strong

economy. The value of products and ahigh-quality lifestyle remain inexpensivethere by comparison with much of the restof the world. Accommodations at even thebest hotels are affordable, and most comewith the luxuries any world traveler wantsand expects. The mantra we found inThailand was “live our lifestyle.”

Aside from rich cultural offerings,Thailand is one of the few places in the worldthat you can visit and enjoy a lifestyle thatwould come at a much higher price almostanywhere else today. Food, accommodationsand, yes, golf are still inexpensive in Thailand,as are a multitude of luxury services includingfamed Thai massages. For many tourists, aprimary benefit of visiting this incredibleplace is the lifestyle that can be enjoyed at arelatively modest price.

For golfers, the benefits are even greater. This gorgeous, exotic country is home tosome of the most beautiful golf courses inthe world. According to the Thai GolfAssociation, there are more than 200 golfcourses just from Phuket to Pattaya and onto Bangkok.

Interestingly, caddies at all golf coursesin Thailand are female. The caddy whoholds your umbrella to protect you fromthe sun or fetches your favorite club willalso gladly massage your back and find acold towel for your neck. And she’ll dothat while also providing accurate yardageand reading your putts. The cost for thislevel of service is a mere 400 baht—approximately $13!

Most golf courses also offer a high levelof amenities. In Thailand, for example, afterfinishing a round of golf, it’s normal to

shower and change into clean clothes inthe clubhouse. Most facilities areexpansive, providing more than 30 privateshowers and large, beautifully appointedlocker rooms.

And then there are the coursesthemselves. Siam Country Club in Pattayahas three championship golf courses. Thequalifying course for the InternationalBMW Championships is one of the newerlayouts and, as one would expect, it offersexceptional golf. Siam Country Club is thefirst privately owned golf course inThailand and the first facility in thecountry to host an LPGA event. Itsstunning contemporary clubhouse haseverything.

Owner Prasertchai Phornprapha, affectionately known as Khun Chai, is

proud of his club and of the lifestyle that hiscountry offers. “Here it’s all about how welive,” he says. “Where else can you live the

lifestyle we enjoy? Manicures, pedicuresand massages are just a few of the luxurieseasily afforded here. Thailand offers alifestyle found nowhere else.”

Another first-class facility is LotusValley Golf Resort. This Gary Player designis about an hour’s drive from Bangkok.Opened in 1998, Lotus Valley is a 7,015-yard championship layout with a modernclubhouse complete with Japanese baths.Greens fees vary from about $50 to $120per round, depending on the time of day, season, etc.

The Kingdom of Thailand offerschampionship golf with water features, fruittrees and much of what you would findanywhere in the world. One golf course, however, also includes monkeys. Seriously, monkeys everywhere. Bangpra Golf Clubnorth of Pattaya was built in 1958 andupdated in 1988. This mature facility is oneof the prettiest courses in the area, and it canbe played for approximately $35-$90,depending on time and day of play.

In Chiang Mai, in northwesternThailand, Chiang Mai Highlands Golf andSpa Resort offers every conceivable

amenity. This family facility provides forspectacular mountain golf atapproximately $100 a round for visitors.Opened in 2005, the Lee Schmidt andBrian Curley design plays to a par 72 at7,003 yards.

Another excellent hotel in the area isSiripanna Villa Resort & Spa, with just 74spacious, luxurious rooms and villas.Gorgeous teak furniture throughout andan abundance of luxury touches make thisa property not to be missed.

Chiang Mai is famous for the MaesaElephant Camp, a conservation centerwith some 70 elephants on property that

have been trained to entertain thousandsof visitors from around the world. Mostimpressive are the Guinness World Recordand Ripley’s Believe it or Not notedpainting elephants. These highly-trained-pachyderms-turned-highly-paid-artistscommanded $50,000 for a painting titled“Lanna,” purchased by a Thai-born U.S.businessman. Daily painted canvasses sellfor as much as $100. The Elephant Campis a must see when visiting Chiang Mai.

The Coachella Valley currently hassome 500,000 year-round residents, andeven though summer temperatures canhover in the low 100s, the restaurant sceneis bustling. Maybe it’s because the AC isfree and residents don’t want to turn ontheir own stoves to create more heat. Butmost likely it’s because the CoachellaValley has rising stars on its impressive

culinary scene and a slew of fabulousrestaurants to match.

Balisage Bistro (145 N. Gene Autry Trail,Palm Springs; 760.406.4565) is around thecorner from Palm Springs InternationalAirport, next to Atlantic Aviation, a privateand charter-plane airport. It cleverly derivesits name from the French term for runway

lighting, since the airport’s runways are astone’s throw from the restaurant.Chef/owner Daniel Villanueva is a recenttransplant from Hollywood, where hecatered to movie sets and movie stars, and hehas already won the hearts and stomachs oflocals and jetsetters.

Balisage offers breakfast, lunch anddinner, its menu showcasing the familiarand familiar-with-a-twist. Fresh-bakedbreads and pastries and locally sourcedingredients turn into exceptional meals.Fresh buttermilk pancakes with berrycompote butter and organic blue agavesyrup, and poached eggs on brioche withlobster Hollandaise are two of the tastybreakfast items. The fresh pastas are handmade daily, and the Mozzarella and Stracciatella aremade fresh regularly. This is a great spot fornibbling and sipping. A snack menuincludes a cheese board with walnut bread, local honey and strawberry preserves;crispy calamari with spicy romesco sauce;pea and prosciutto arancini; and marinatedoctopus with lima beans.

Jaguar is mixing things up. In the new F-Type Roadster, they’ve combined speed with design to give any sports caron the market a run. The roof line swoops. The rear end iscurves. The front end dips. The roadster is different than

your typical Jaguar sedan. You’ll find hints of the Jaguar DNAcoming through in the interior and grill, but there’s not muchelse to suggest the family tree.

The F-Type front end is sleek but hints at the muscle underthe hood. Small vertically oriented headlamps peer ahead like a

beast. Two air vents near the top of the hood add dimension andmuch-needed oxygen for the power plant below.

This is the most powerful production model to roll off theline in the distinguished history of Jaguar. The 5-liter V8 is bornwith 550 horsepower. Sadly, it’ll never see its full potentialbecause Jaguar engineers chose to limit the top speed to 186mph to keep from having to put tougher tires on the car. Atspeeds above 70 mph, a spoiler deploys to reduce lift by anestimated 265 pounds.

The look of the F-Type is classic sporty roadster. This is such adeparture from Jaguar’s typical design that some inside thecompany are calling it a game changer. Whether the game ischanged or not is left to interpretation, but the look is decidedlydifferent. If the Porsche 911 is the gold standard, the F-Type iscloser to matching it than any Jag in this decade.

The performance should win awards. A zero-to-60 time of 3.5seconds puts the F-Type in an elite category. This is muscle witha refined finish. The V8 unleashes 502 pound-feet of torque at itsmaximum RPM. This is glue-you-to-the-seat, butterf ly-in-your-stomach stuff. The cornering is electronically controlled withsensors to keep tires from slipping or drifting, making it not onlyquick but safe.

The hydroformed aluminum frame is as rigid as a privateschool’s honor policy—the frame just does not give in the hard

turns. Beams run over the roof andthrough the mid section, essentiallyreplacing the B pillars. This rigidity helpsshrug the ultra-luxe label and add somestreet cred in the performancedepartment. The roof, incidentally, can bealuminum or full glass for stargazing.

Take a look at the backend of this beastand you’ll feel your heart race. It’s anunspoken rule that you’ve made a truesports car when you can make heartspound with an exhaust note and a taillight. The rear shoulders of the of the F-Typelook strong and sleek, the taillights are thinand lean.

Inside the F-Type Coupe the softer sideof Jaguar is still in full force. Supple leatherjuxtaposes against the recessed dashinstruments. The passenger gets a grabhandle, which leaves no doubt to the trueintent. Bucket racing seats aren’t the kindin which you’ll want to take a cross-country road trip, but your daily commutewill have no ill effects.

The fun of driving the F-Type isengaging the dynamic driving system,

which brakes the inside disc brakes onturns and locks up the differential to getyou through corners quicker. You can, ofcourse, disable the system if you want to doit alone, but there’s no doubt that the F-Type technology can drive the car betterthan you can. The dynamic braking worksbehind the scenes to keep you fromdrifting in corners, and the smart systempushes and pulls each wheel for maximumtraction in the corners.

There’s nothing ordinary about the F-Type Roadster. You’ll find the real deal herewhen you compare it with any sports caron the market. From performance to head-turn factor, this is a car your friends willenvy and you’ll not tire of driving.

Set aside about $100,000 for all theoptions to make this ride exactly what youwant. Get your name in with your localdealer fast before these are gone. TheJaguar F-Type Roadster will prove to you

that Jaguar is back in the business of sportscars.

The game has changed, there’s a Jaguarloose and the competition should beware.

Iconic American sage, scathing social commentator andsmarty-pants 19th-century author Mark Twain, aka SamuelClemens, once famously opined, “Golf is a good walk spoiled.”

From across the pond comes a rebuttal from award-winningUK golf-shoe designer Alex Bartholomew. “It is said you shouldinvest in two things: a good bed and good shoes, because if youaren’t in one, you are in the other.”

Bartholomew’s Royal Albartross Golf Shoe collection may nothave a royal pedigree, but it does have superior breeding in newtechnology for “those who like the finer things in life,” says

Bartholomew, listing the fine detail of “Shindo lace tips hand-rolledin Japan.”

Wow. We had many questions for this young entrepreneur, whose innovative line is just beginning to roll out across the globeexclusively to the most discriminating stores. Like Cinderella’s glassslipper, whether snazzy or signature style, these golf shoes are aperfect fit for pros and amateurs. AB It was named for the golfing term albatross (a double eagle). But that was trademarked so I added a few letters and the wordRoyal. My name AlBart is in there and my now husband Ross. Notplanned.  Meant to be!

DGT Why golf shoes?  Why not polo shirts and plaid pants withmatching visors?

AB Always a follower of fashion and shoes, it struck me that thisbeautiful game played by gentlemen and women in suchsurroundings was severely lacking on the shoe front. While atBrighton University, I came upon the industry by chance, workingfor a shoemaker. My final textiles/footwear catwalk collectionshowcased a men’s brogue that everyone loved and thought lookedrather golf-like. Having taken up golf, I found the choices forwomen were copies of clumsy men’s styles in smaller sizes. Itliterally went from there.

DGT What gives Royal Albartross golf shoes the edge on thecompetition?

AB The sport remained pretty unaffected by trends and technicaldevelopments in fashion apparel for a very long time while playersobsessed over the newest driver technology. And as a niche market, that left the door open to us. We walked right in. I was still new tothe business and success doesn’t’ come easy. We have modified our“last” (model) shapes and focused on comfort, never losing sight ofour brand message. We don’t compete with mainstream brands; weoffer a luxurious design-led golf shoe combined with superiorcomponentry and materials, down to the finest details.

DGT Workmanship is critical to your brand but isn’tshoemaking a dying art?

AB Our factory is in Montegranaro, Italy, the heart of the Italianshoemaking region. The area in particular encompasses years ofthe real art of manufacturing shoes and handwork. There aremaster craftsmen who know everything about materials, fit andcomfort with so many years of experience.  It takes eight weeks and70 hours to finish each pair.

DGT What are the detailing differences you mentioned?

AB The signature toe shapes, polished eyelets, silver lace tips. Theleather stretches in a certain direction; the seams are thinned toavoid abrasion. All trims are designed for heavy foot-traffic wearwith a moisture barrier and anti-microbial treatment protection. Each pair is a finely tuned and very practical work of art that arrivesin an RA shoebox, whether it’s a new riff on a classic saddle shoe ora sassy style in glossy patent leather or exotic snakeskin.

DGT Where does comfort come in?

AB People expect to have to wear in their shoes before venturingon the course and I really enjoy seeing their faces when they try ona pair of Royal Albartross for the first time. These shoes areremarkably comfortable; the linings are super soft and the insolesvery cushioned. We put this down to our factory’s secret materialand construction combinations—the shoes really do mold to yourfeet very quickly. We enjoy a technical partnership with Champ Q-lok cleats and receptacles for traction and support. I’d challenge anyserious golfer to find a better choice in golf shoes.

DGT What’s in the future for Royal Albartross GolfShoes?  Does her majesty wear them? What about celebs? Anybragging rights for awards?

AB The future is looking bright! Our soft-sole collection has beenso well received, and we have opened a number of key retailaccounts in the UK and the USA this year. We are also extendingthe collection to include further golf accessories. I don't believe wehave many golf-playing Royals in the UK, but if they did, I am surewe would be regarded! And here are a few of our Celeb-fans: JodieKidd, George Lopez, Anthony Anderson, Dougray Scott, MichaelCollins, Dan Walker, Anton du Beke, Clay Buchholz, Eric Gagne. We received the 2014 MyGolfSpy winner of best golf shoes inboth spikeless and spiked categories. Thank you for asking!

The strongest trends are often thosethat incorporate classic elements whileintroducing an attention-grabbing twist, especially in the world of fashion and finejewels.

According to Harper’s Bazaar andFashionAllure.com, one of the hottestjewelry trends for fall-winter 2014-15 isthe figurative cuff, crafted in differentshapes and worn on one or both wrists. Acuff has the power to transform atraditional look into a bold, stylish powerstatement.

CUFFSDavid Yurman has the trend covered

in two pieces that confidentlycomplement fall fashion choices. HisDiamond and Silver Starburst Bypass CuffBracelet showcases white diamonds (0.56tcw) with sterling silver, measuring 1.5inches wide and 2.5 inches in diameter, selling for $1,950.

His Labyrinth Double-Loop Cuff withDiamonds and Gold from the LabyrinthCollection is designed with a sparkling mixof sterling silver, 18-karat yellow gold andpavé diamonds (2.21 tcw). It retails for$7,800.

Both pieces exhibit the artistry ofYurman’s talent as a sculptor, the creativeimpetus that was the brand’s genesis.

Bulgari also weighs in with some iconictrend statements for fall, starting with theSerpenti Tubogas bracelet in pink goldwith semi-pavé diamonds, featuring thetrademark serpent that gracefully wrapsaround a woman’s wrist, for $34,100.

For a more modestly priced option, yetjust as cosmopolitan, there’s the BulgariBulgari gold bangle bracelet withdiamonds, available in pink or white gold. Both bangles are versatile enough to bef launted by a man or woman, and eachretails for $7,770.

CHAINS & CHUNKY DESIGNSGold chains and chunky pieces galore

also stood out at Fashion Week catwalksthis past Spring in Paris, Milan and NewYork, establishing dominance as seasonalmust-haves for fall and winter. Fashionistasare encouraged to layer their chains andbulk them up to accentuate the trend evenmore.

John Hardy has created a pair ofmatching pieces to fit the trend, whichannounce one’s entrance but won’toverwhelm the visual or the culturalsenses. The Naga Collection Ruby, Goldand Sterling Silver Medium Dragon

Braided Chain Bracelet displays a strikingsynergy of braided chains in wovensterling, clamped with the sharp bite of aBalinese dragon gleaming in 18-karatyellow gold and glowing with cabochonruby eyes. This seven-inch work of wristart is available for $2,600.

To accompany the bracelet, the NagaCollection Black Sapphire, Ruby, Gold andSterling Silver Dragon Ring is a statementpiece featuring a black-and-white-sapphire-encrusted sterling silver dragondesign accented with radiant 18-karat goldand ruby eyes. The ring is 1.4 inches wideand is priced at $1,695.

Italian jewelry designer Marco Bicegoprovides a variation on the gold-chaintheme with his 18-karat Yellow GoldNecklace from the Lunaria Collection.Measuring 18 inches in length andretailing for $7,410, the organically shaped18-karat gold stones compose a radiantand timeless design.

Bicego has artfully combined the goldtrend with another fall trend, dangling andlarge earrings, to create a look that’seffortlessly chic. Pendant and drop earringsthat cascade close to the shoulders suggesta sense of self-controlled elegance anddignity.

Marco Bicego’s Lunaria Diamond andYellow Gold Drop Earrings, $2,450,feature a disc of 18-karat yellow goldengraved with rich, radiant striations. Itsstriking detail is showcased within a frameof diamond pavé (0.21 tcw) and displayedon a wire of white gold, a drop of 1.15inches, and width of 0.75 inch.

RINGSFashion editors agree that bold rings

remain a trend, especially when theyexhibit precious stones.

Temple St. Clair features its Diamondand Yellow Gold Vine Ring for $5,500,from the Classic Gold Collection. Agorgeous 18-karat yellow gold vine isedged at either side with glitteringdiamonds (0.8 tcw).

David Yurman’s Starburst MediumRing with Diamonds blends sterling silverand pavé diamonds (0.50 tcw). High styleand stunning in its simplicity, it retails for$1,650.

Bulgari’s day-into-night Intarsio ringshowcases a mosaic of shapes, combininground and squared insertions of pavédiamonds and onyx elegantly outlined bywhite gold, for $8,150. The Intarsio collectionreflects Mediterranean architecture, deeplyinfluenced by the arabesque movement.

And, just to ensure men can get in onthe trend, Marco Bicego’s ‘Cairo’ CigarBand Ring has a minimalist logo-etchedsetting which adds sleek balance to anartistically textured band, hand cast frombright 18-karat gold and priced at $3,370.

To really rock the styles for fall, keepaccessories simple to make a trendy piecepop. The bolder a specific piece, the betterit is to downplay complementary pieces.
