P&C Association Meeting - Monday, 9 October at 3:00 pm in the library

Assessment Policy As assessment due dates approach for term three, I would like to take this opportunity to remind students and parents/carers of the schools policy regarding attendance and the submission of assessment.

Assessment Calendar All students are provided with a copy of their assessment calendar at the start of the term. Assessment calendars are also published on the schools Facebook page and website.

Absence If a student or parent/carer is aware that the student will be absent in advance, they need to complete a ‘Request for Extension’ form. These can be collected from the office or printed form our website.

If a student is absent on the due date of an assignment or an examination without prior notice, the following procedure applies.

Where possible, deliver the assignment in person or via email.

A parent/carer is to call the curriculum Head of Department to explain the exceptional circumstance resulting in the student being

unable to meet the assessment conditions.

A parent/carer is to provide a medical certificate or explanatory letter to the curriculum Head of Department upon return to school

as proof of absence.

A parent/carer is to complete a ‘Request for Extension’ form on the students return to school.

Extension The curriculum Head of Department may grant an extension where exceptional circumstances exist.

These circumstances may include but are not limited to:

Extended absence due to illness which is supported by a medical certificate or documentation relating to an existing medical

condition.

Absence due to a family bereavement or special circumstance supported by parent/carer communication.

A student physically unable to participate due to an illness or injury.

A student has been suspended.

Students seeking an extension must:

Apply to the curriculum Head of Department by completing a ‘Request for Extension’ form as soon as practicable or at least three

school days prior to the due date.

Provide details or drafts of work completed up to the time of seeking the extension.

The curriculum Head of Department will determine the merit of the application and advise the relevant classroom teacher/s and other curriculum Heads of Department of their decision.

If an extension is not granted, the student must submit the assessment task by the due date.

Assessment Policy The schools Assessment Policy can be found in full on our website.

PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE

PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE Cont…. Attendance This year the school has focussed strongly on improving student attendance and ensuring that every day counts. I am extremely pleased to announce that the recent School Data Profile released by the Department of Education and Training highlights the improvements made in the area of 95% to 100% rate, increasing from 30.5% of students to 42.6% of students. This is a fantastic result and a real testament to the strategies the school has implemented and the commitment of students.

Unfortunately, there was no improvement in the area of less than 85% attendance rate with an increase from 23.2% of students to 24.8% of students. As a result, the school has reviewed how we work with these students and their families and we are implementing a range of new strategies to support these students.

Facilities As previously mentioned, early this year the school was awarded a substantial amount of funding under the Advancing Queensland State Schools program to refurbish our science laboratories. Unfortunately, there has been some delays to work commencing due to tenders within the allocated budget not being received. I am pleased to announce we have managed to secure more funding and the work on the laboratories will commence over the school holidays and run into term four.

We have also been successful in obtaining a grant submission of $23000 for the purchase and installation of an electronic sign for the school. This sign will be able to display images and multiple messages for student and parents to keep up to date with what is happening at school.

P&C News The next P&C meeting is Monday 9th October at 3.00pm in the school library. I hope to see you there.

Yours sincerely,

Heather Murry Principal

COLOUR RUN

FUN

Everyone had so much fun at the Colour Run, Saturday 19th August, organised by the Collinsville State School P & C. The event was well attended by staff and students and by all accounts everyone enjoyed themselves. Thankyou to the Collinsville State School P & C for putting together this great event and a huge thankyou to Nick Upton for sponsoring all students entry into the event.

Student VS Teacher Touch Football Thursday 31st August the students defeated the teacher and year 12 team 1-0 in a game of touch football. The teachers have already started planning their revenge in a game of netball next term.

Whitsunday Athletics Carnival

On Thursday the 17th of August, we took a team of 14

students to the Whitsunday Athletics Carnival. The event was

held in Proserpine for students who achieved 1st or 2nd in our

own Athletics Carnival. On the day, the students competed in

at least two events putting in their best effort. As timekeeper. I

watched a number of them race around the track trying to take

down the fierce competition. Mr Young and Mr Treagle were

on the High Jump and impressed by the effort of our students.

Cory Bye and Kristal Chapman were successful in making it to

the NQ Athletics trials in Townsville. A number of students

achieved personal bests for their respective events, which was

great to see. All students who attended competed and gave

their all. After a tough day like this, we briefly stopped in at

McDonalds for a nutritious feed and reward. Thankyou to all

students who attended, Mr Young, and Mr Treagle for

making the event possible and look forward to taking even

more student next year. Mr Yeo, HPE Teacher

Year 6 Transition The Year 6 students from the three primary schools have been attending a transition program to ensure the change from primary to secondary school is as smooth as possible. The program aims to give students a taste of high school life and includes a variety of activities. Students will be coming to the high school every second week until the end of the year to participate. Over the last few weeks, the students made some timber and acrylic items in Manual Arts and taken part in Health and Physical Education activities. In the coming weeks, they will have the opportunity to engage with all subject areas. We are pleased to welcome the students who attend the transition program and hope that it helps to make the change from primary to secondary school less daunting.

James Bond—Red, White and Black Theme Students are invited to attend our annual School Ball on Saturday 7th October, 2017.

Years 10 to 12 students are permitted to bring a partner upon request. Each request is subject to approval by the Principal.
