Principal’s News This week, we welcomed back our Prep and Year 1 students. It was so exciting to
see their happy faces, and on their parents faces. Our students have been very
settled and the transition has been very smooth. Approximately 150 children in
these year levels are attending, which is fantastic. We can’t wait until we have all of
our students back with us. Our focus is on student well-being and re-learning
school routines and procedures so that they are all ready for learning.
A huge shout out to our parents for demonstrating smooth drop-off and pick-up
procedures. Just a reminder if your child/ren are not there when you arrive, please
do ‘a lap’ and come back. Parents must stay in their vehicles. Thanks to the
parents who have been walking their children to and from school, as this alleviates
the congestion.
Reporting for Semester One
All state schools have been given the flexibility to modify the assessment and
reporting requirements for Term 2 and Semester 1, to reflect the adjusted nature of
learning during this time. Each year parents are provided with two written report
cards. This year, Semester 1 report cards will be emailed to families a little later
than usual, on Friday, 31 July 2020. This is week 3 of Term 3. This change in
timeframe, will allow teachers time to modify assessment and to gather
assessment evidence and information about students’ learning progress, taking
into account the changes to schooling.
Report cards will also be modified for all students for Semester 1 2020, as they will
be based on information developed from a modified program of learning in the 4
learning areas of English, Mathematics, Science and Health and Physical
Education. While we are modifying aspects of the curriculum, when students return
to a normal timetable, we will implement all learning areas of the Australian

Curriculum.
To ensure that parents/carers receive their child’s report card, we need to ensure your family contact details
are correct. Where students reside in two homes, it is important that all family members have the correct
information listed so both parents/carers will receive a report card via email. The email addresses on file are
currently being used to distribute our school newsletter electronically each week so if you are not receiving the
newsletter or you would like to change the email address, you will need to update your details with the school.
This can be done simply and easily by contacting the school office
To ensure you receive your child’s report card, it is recommended that you add the following email to your
safe senders list so the report card email isn’t sent to the junk folder:
Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month
May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month. The Education Department's campaigns, Know the
Signs and Not Now Not Ever, reminds us that there are many forms of domestic and family violence.
Financial, social, physical, sexual, psychological and image-based abuse are some of the types of abuse
used to cause fear and control a partner, ex-partner or family member. Schools and workplaces are
encouraged to use Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month as an opportunity to look at the positive
ways in which we can prevent domestic and family violence in our communities. If you or any one you know is
suffering from Domestic Violence please visit https://www.1800respect.org.au/ to seek help. You are also
welcome to contact me at any time.
Student Code of Conduct
The Student Code of Conduct replaces the:
Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students
Statement of Expectations, and
Code of School Behaviour.
Queensland state schools have the full 2020 school year to develop and consult with their community on the
new Student Code of Conduct. Until a school finalises their Student Code of Conduct, the existing
Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students continues to apply.
The Student Code of Conduct clearly sets out expectations about staff responsibilities to support students to
understand and meet discipline expectations of the school, and guidance on the application, where required,
of disciplinary consequences. This document will be available on each school's website and provided to newly
enrolled students and their parents. Our school will be collaboratively developing our school’s Student Code of
Conduct. We will be regularly engaging with our parents and community in the development of this document,
through our monthly P&C meetings.

CHAPPY CHAT "In the rush to return to normal, use this time to consider which parts of normal
are worth rushing back to." Dave Hollis
How has isolation been for you? As a parent myself, I understand there have
been amazing, memory making moments. There has been the need to do the
washing but also the thought "we don’t need to be anywhere, l'll do it tomorrow"
because playing cubby houses is more important that day. There's been the
feeling of wanting a small amount of time by yourself, just to regroup but at the
same time loving everyone at home and being able to do the things you
previously haven't had time to do as a family.
The above quote has me thinking, what do I need to change and what do I need to have stay the
same as now. I encourage you to also ask the same. I love how some people have discovered a new
kind of 'normal', through online meetings (actually might be a great way for more people to be
involved, who haven't been able to attend meetings before), or discovered new creative ways to keep
in contact with people and show you care like 'mail a hug' by drawing an outline of your children to
mail to family or friends, writing letters/cards even if its snail mail because it’s a personal touch, or
discovering you can now afford to have your child do ballet/ guitar lessons through amazing free
online lessons.
As the world around us starts up again, as our Preps and Yr 1's get back into a routine of school, as
more workers are able to return to work, what of the good from the last month, or more, can we hold
onto? How can we continue (as I heard once), on a journey of not just being a "human doing" but a
"human being"?

COMMUNICATION CORNER
Hi families and students!
I hope you’re enjoying your time learning at home. It’s been fantastic to welcome back the Prep and Year 1
students this week.
Today I wanted to talk about cooking – this is a great family activity with lots of learning opportunities!
Cooking is a wonderful experience for children; it’s hands on, lots of fun and has a yummy outcome at the
end.
Some of the things you can practice while cooking with your child:
Practice different describing words and concepts, such as “wet” and “dry”, “big” and “small”, or “hot”
and “cold”
Practice maths skills like counting, measuring, weighing, shapes, and number recognition
Practice fine motor skills with rolling, kneading, cutting and sorting
Practice social skills like turn-taking, sharing and working together
For the older students, cooking can be a great way to practice following instructions, reading recipes and
learning new vocabulary.
Once you’ve finished cooking it’s a great time to practice a retell – talking through all the steps of what
you’ve just done.
I’d love to hear how you practice some of these
skills in the kitchen. Let me know what you make!
Have a great weekend,

Cooking with Mrs Cuthill Yesterday, Mrs Cuthill was joined by Samantha from Prep Blue and Miah from 1D to assist in cooking rock
cakes (something Mrs Cuthill used to make with her grandmother when she was a girl – a long, long, long time
ago). The girls’ names were drawn out of a hat, to celebrate the return of our Prep and Year 1 students.
Recipe for Rock Cakes
Ingredients
2 cup self-raising flour sifted
2/3 cup caster sugar
1 1/2 cup sultanas (or you could use dried cranberries or blueberries)
125 g butter melted
2 egg lightly beaten
1 tsp vanilla essence
1 tbs milk optional (we needed a bit more – maybe because we weren’t exact with flour)
METHOD
1. Preheat oven to 180C.Grease baking trays.
2. Combine flour, sugar and sultanas in a bowl. Make a well in the centre.
3. Add butter, eggs and vanilla. Stir gently to combine. Mixture should be slightly sticky. Add milk if the flour
does not completely combine.
4. Drop heaped tablespoonfuls of mixture onto greased trays, allowing room for spreading.
5. Bake for approximately 12 minutes, or until lightly golden and firm to the touch.
6. Stand on trays for 5 minutes.
7. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
