COLLINGTON ORGAN PRESENTATION BY MARILYN HASKEL, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21, 3PM – CHAPEL: Collington has a lovely, small organ in the Chapel, but how many of us have heard it? On Sunday, in the Chapel, Marilyn Haskel will speak about the organ, play some interesting selections that are suited to our instrument, and even lead everyone in singing a few hymns. Marilyn is president of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada and an organist who retired from Trinity, Wall Street, New York City before coming to Collington. Come spend a delightful hour with her and learn about the extraordinary gift of our David Moore organ.

GOOD READS: As the airplane climbed through the black and misty Casablanca sky, did you wonder what might be awaiting Ilsa Lund and Victor Laszlo in Lisbon? Their fate is for us to imagine, but what was happening in neutral Portugal and its capital city? Well, pretty much what was happening in Casablanca, but in a larger arena—refugees

fleeing Nazis, spies from allies and axis, bribery, duplicity, all happening with the dictator Salazar desperately and ably maintaining Portugal’s neutrality throughout WW ll. Read all about it in “Lisbon: War in the Shadows of the City of Light, 1939-1945” by Neill Lochery. The book is in our library’s History-WW ll section. THE FITNESS COMMITTEE NEEDS YOUR HELP: We are trying to assess the use of the equipment in the fitness room. This will help us to decide which pieces will need to be replaced before too long. Near the entry of the fitness room is a sign that asks you to sign in when you come to use the equipment. That applies to independent users as well as those who come for rehab. We know not everyone remembers to do so. So, one question is to all users: please sign in! We’ll also place next to it a sheet with the list of equipment and ask you to mark which piece(s) you have used or are going to use. We won’t be asking this forever, only for a limited period to get a reasonable estimate of the equipment use. We thank you for spending those few minutes to sign in and mark the equipment list. For the Fitness Committee, Jacob Kijne, chair. NEW TO US PETER LOVESEY BOOKS arriving soon. Look for them on the paperback and hardcover Mystery shelves. VETERINARIAN AT COLLINGTON: Our Collington Veterinarian will be here on November 5. If you wish a doctor’s visit, you must call for an appointment. Call the Pet Committee Chair, Pat Kirkham and state why with enough information to give to the Vet, so your pet’s previous file(this does not apply to a new animal patient) and correct equipment can accompany both the Vet and her technician on the day of their visit. It is important to call for the appointment at least three days before so the number of animal patients can be known before-hand by the Vet team. In advance, my thanks and I await your call. - Pat Kirkham, x7292.

PARTY BRIDGE: If there is a bridge person at Collington who would like to play (party bridge) on Saturday afternoon please call Peg McQuarrie at x7593. PET POLICY: It has again come to my attention that some residents (living not only in apartments but within all four districts and villas, both within various clusters and behind, around all the open areas) are letting mainly cats out whenever they or their owners wish their animals to be out and free. This continues to be not only a problem for those residents without any animals of their own but is also against the Collington regulations stated now many times in the Courier All dogs, cats, and any other like animal must be leashed. It is as simple as this. If those who are affected continue with this behavior, I will have already discussed this situation with security. The regulation is as important for the health of our community, as is the picking up of one’s animal’s waste product, which also continues as a happening against another Collington regulation. If anyone has a complaint in return I am more than happy to listen, debate, and discuss. -Thank you. ON-SITE DERMATOLOGY will be here on October 23, 2018. If you want an appointment, please call 1-877-345-5300 COMMUNITY OUTREACH: The Community Outreach Committee and the Bowie Food Bank thank all the kind Collington residents who have so generously contributed food and toiletries to those who struggle with budgets that do not always stretch to some basic needs. So please continue putting a few extra items in your grocery shopping cart. It makes all the difference to those in need. -Nadine Hathaway and Gretta Estey Community Outreach Committee Food Bank MORE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE OO GLASS CASES: We need several more apartment residents to become members of the OO Glass Cases (GC) Committee. Living in the apartments, makes it easier to respond to the many calls we receive from people interested

in seeing and hopefully buying something from the 2nd floor GC (by the Billiards Room) or the 3rd floor GC (in the Creighton Center by the Residents Association Office). Yoo-hoo….Holiday Bazaar? The annual holiday bazaar is fast approaching, and I have not heard from many people as to whether or not they want to participate, need a table (or more than one), will be contributing items to sell (e.g. baked goods, other food, crafts, etc.) and if anyone would like to volunteer to wo/man the tables. As always, most of the proceeds go to the Residents’ Association; the cost of materials may be retained by the participants. The Auditorium is reserved for Friday, 9 November from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM for the 2018 Holiday Bazaar. Tables will be set up by 9:00, so those dropping off food, etc. can do so between 9:00 and 10:00. Please let me know ASAP, if you have not done so already, if you are contributing items and if you will need a table (or two), so I can plan the layout and give the information to Jerome and Charlene. And, if you told me in passing in a hallway, please tell me again. Many thanks. Maja (I Live to Nag) Keech [email protected] Cottage 2004, x7253

Privacy Issues with Alexa

by Barbara Naimark

What once was only in your imagination is now a reality in the “cloud”!  Alexa, Google Home,

Echo, Siri, and Pillo can contribute to an easier lifestyle. They have many helpful features:

setting a timer, playing music, reading the news, checking the time.  Alexa or similar device is

attractive, unassuming, and small within the home environment; plus, it is very user friendly.

These digital recording technologies need internet which sends voice commands to cyberspace

also known as the cloud. The transmission of your voice to the cloud is allegedly encrypted.

The speech recognition which Alexa and the other devices use continually learn and add more

functionality over time.  The more you use them, the more adaptable they become to your

speech patterns, vocabulary, and personal preference. They can do this because the devices

can remember interaction.

As with all technology, there are some privacy concerns that effect you and Collington.

The downside of these devices is that they are always recording and have sent information to

unintended recipients.  To minimize risk to Collington and you, a policy has been established.

The policy will be in the updated handbook which is not presently ready for publication;

however, Pat Howard has assured me that the policy will be passed to Lois Brown.

The dual purpose for the policy is firstly to inform you that Collington will not be responsible or

held liable for any personal health information/resident privacy that is re‐disclosed. The risk is

yours to assume if information is exposed to others: secondly to uphold Maryland’s wiretapping

and electronic surveillance act. “It is unlawful to record a conversation without the consent of

all parties to that conversation.”  Staff, especially in the Creighton Center, should be informed if

you have an Alexa and may be recording a conversation.

Collington is on‐board for residents to have and use these technologies; however, please be

mindful of their potential privacy consequences.
