COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
June 15, 2014 Trinity Sunday
ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME
Silent Prayer
Righteous God, we seek your Word, in humility,
recognizing our powerlessness to fulfill our high intentions by ourselves.
Like children, who much depend on others for their well-being,
we come to you for spiritual nourishment and freedom from bondage to sin
and death. In this time of worship may we find life and true peace. Amen
Prelude
Welcome and Announcements
We welcome you in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ! Please sign the
guest book in the narthex so we can send you a welcome packet.
Gathering of Prayer Concerns and Joys
Please raise your hand to share your joys or concerns to be included in
the prayers of the people this day. You may also write your concern on
the pink sheets and hand to the Pastor. Please mail a prayer card from
the narthex to your loved one.
Centering Music - “Gather Us In” STF #2236
*Please stand for items marked with an asterisk.
Call to Worship Leader: Come together, disciples of Jesus who dwell in the shadow of the Most High. People: God is our refuge and fortress. We not fear the daytime threats or nighttime terror. Leader: God promises to keep you wherever you go. There is nowhere that you can go that God is not. People: Surely God is in this place. This is the house of God and the gate of heaven. Leader: Let us worship God.
*Hymn - “Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken ” PH #81
*Prayer of Confession Leader: All of us share in the sin of humankind that separates us
from God, others, and our own best selves. Let us once again seek that gift of grace as we remember and renounce our failure. All: Forgive us, O God for making our lives too busy to include you. We forget to say thank you for quiet miracles of your constant presence and creativity. We hurt others with our words and our actions. We forget that others depend on us for attention and guidance. Help us to be better friends, partners and parents. Forgive us for our lack of faith and our commitment to you, O God. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
*Assurance of Pardon Leader: As a father loves his children, so does God love the creation. People: Longing to be in relationship with His children, God sent his Son for our forgiveness, Leader: Friends believe the good news,
People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
*Sharing of the Peace
Leader: The peace of Christ be with you.
People: And also with you.
PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD
Sacrament of Baptism
Statement on Baptism
Presentation of Shawn Ryan Ellis for Baptism and Membership
Profession of Faith
*Apostles’ Creed (unison) I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
Prayer
Baptism Prayer & Laying on of Hands
Welcome Shawn Ryan Ellis to God’s Family!
(Children in Pre-K-5th grade will leave for Sunday School and can be picked up in Calvin Hall following the service. )
Special Music - “Let There Be Peace“ Men’s Choir
Keith Haines, Bob Marks, Will Powell, Paul Young
Old Testament Lesson: Proverbs 4: 1-4,10-18 (page 576)
Psalm 89:15-37 (responsive) Leader: By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all their host by the breath of his mouth. People: He gathered the waters of the sea as in a bottle; he put the deeps in storehouses. Leader: Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. People: For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. Leader: The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples. People: The counsel of the Lord stands for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations. Leader: Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage. People: The Lord looks down from heaven; he sees all humankind. Leader: From where he sits enthroned he watches all the inhabitants of the earth— People: he who fashions the hearts of them all, and observes all their deeds. Leader: A king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. The war horse is a vain hope for victory, and by its great might it cannot save. People: Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.
*Hymn - “Of the Father’s Love Begotten ” GTG #108
Gospel Lesson: Luke 15:11-32 (p. 953) Sermon: “Heavenly Father, Earthly Dad ”
The Rev. Dr. Katherine G. Killebrew
RESPONSE TO THE WORD
Offering
“How do we follow Jesus? We try to live our lives as he did – the example of the perfect steward. Stewardship is discipleship. It is the care and use of all that we have been given by God and
is often explained in terms of talent, treasure and time.”
Musical Offering
*Doxology #606 “Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.”
*Prayer of Dedication
Prayers of the People Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Let us pray,
Leader: On this day we recognize our fathers and stepfathers, those who have nurtured and guided us in our lives. People: We thank You, O God, for those who have been fathers to us. Leader: We honor our grandfathers, our uncles and brothers, those who have demonstrated love and care to us in our lives. People: We thank You, O God, for those who have been like fathers to us.
(continues on next page)
Leader: We appreciate our teachers, leaders and pastors, who
have been both male and female, but we especially honor
those who have extended fatherly tenderness and love in
our lives in our past and present.
People: We thank You, O God, for those who have fulfilled a
fatherly role in our lives.
Leader: Loving God, You have been both Mother and Father to us.
Abba, Father, we remember how Jesus called out to You on
earth, recognizing that You are closer to us than our earthly
parents. Your love and care for us are felt in the ways we
are loved and cared for by others. We thank You for all the
male figures in our lives who have shared Your love with
us. We ask that You guide and nurture new fathers and
fathers-to-be. We seek Your forgiveness for fathers who
have fallen short, for models of fatherhood that were
limiting rather than embracing, for that is not Your model.
You are our ever-loving Parent, Father of us all. Grant Your
wisdom to all fathers and fatherly figures to love their
children as You have loved Your children.
People: We thank You, O God, for fatherhood and mother
hood, for the blessing of parents in our lives.
Leader: Abba, Father, we pray with those who are mourning the
loss of fathers today, and for those whose fathers were
absent or abusive. Ease their pain on this day, loving
God. May they know Your embrace, and that You are
more than Father or Mother to us–You are the all-
loving, all-caring Parent, Creator of heaven and earth,
who knows the hairs on our heads.
People: We thank You, O God, that You are always with us,
that You will never leave us or forsake us.
Please join us downstairs to
dedicate our newly renovated gym!
Leader: We thank You for this day, and ask that You bless all of
Your children with Your love, as a wonderful father
loves their child.
All: Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil:
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory, for ever. Amen.
GO IN GOD’S NAME
