You can download the latest edition and view the calendar on our website.

A notice from Rita; There will be a Coffee Morning for Macmillan in the Village Hall on Friday 28th September 10:30-12:00noon. Please join us for coffee and cake. Have you taken the time to look at the postcards in the phone box? If you’re going away, you can send a postcard to the phonebox, c/o Simon Longson 4 Collingham Road, LN6 9LP. Prizes for the shortest and longest distance travelled. Did you know there’s a Coffee Stop every Monday morning 10:30am-12:00 in the Church? Come and join us for a natter—everyone welcome. Note! Cake on 24th September :-) A message from Geoff Lloyd: Keep the Home Fires Burning – Friday 9th November. The number of poppies being made is multiplying daily, thank you to all those involved. If you want to help patterns are available in the church, phone kiosk or on-line. At the beginning of September, we are finalising the programme for the evening. If you wish to contribute please email [email protected].

Extensive research has been carried out on those members of our community who were killed in action in WW1. The majority of the information is on the internet. However, because over 60% of WW1 records were lost during WW2 we are having difficulties finding information on Percival Haunsell and George Wood. (Spellings of the names may be slightly different for example Woods rather than Wood). If you can help please contact Geoff Lloyd or Grant Fillingham.

Finally, we hope there will be displays in the church over the weekend of the 10th-11th November. If you had a relative who served in WW1, regardless of where they lived, then please contribute to the displays. We would also welcome information on the roles undertaken by any of your female relatives during this period. It doesn’t have to be extensive two sheets of A4 with some key facts including a photograph which we can display on the pews would be much appreciated. I’d like to thank all the people who donated to the LinkUp this month both through their JamJar collections and through donations. I’d also like to thank everyone who has donated to the magazine in the past and our ’regular’ donators for their continued support and generosity. These donations really do help and if you enjoy reading the LinkUp and find it a useful village resource to have and haven’t donated before it’d be lovely if you could. Every £1 helps with the cost of printing. Please support your Link Up Magazine. The magazine is brought to you free by a team of local volunteers. Could you contribute content? Could you collect loose change or make a donation to cover printing costs? Do you use our advertisers? Don’t forget to contact us to advertise your events. (Copy date 20th of the month.)

[Business advert rates: Annual: Full page: £120 Half page £60, Quarter page £35] Jam Jar Appeal

Could you take an empty jar and fill it with loose change? When it’s full hand it to me and the donation helps cover the cost of printing the magazine. We rely on your generosity and the support of our advertisers. Thank you.

The copy date for the next Link Up will be 20th September at 5pm. Please note that all articles in the Link Up are taken in good faith. We cannot and will not, take responsibility for any legal queries resulting thereof. The articles do not necessarily reflect our views. We reserve the right not to print some submitted articles.

SCRABBLE The Scrabblers meet every other Tuesday in the Plough at 7pm. We feel very welcome, a lovely log fire, ’bit of banter’ We usually play 2 games, ’nothing serious’ put the world to rights, home for around 9.30pm. We range in ages & ability but always have a good time! See the Plough page to find out when the next meeting is. GOOD COMPANIONS Swinderby Good Companions Club promotes social interaction and friendship for the senior citizens of the village. Regular monthly meetings are held in the village hall between 2pm and 4pm on the second Thursday of every month. Games are played and afternoon tea is served by volunteer hostesses. Outings are organised during the year along with an annual fund raising garden party. BOWLS CLUB The bowls club meet during the summer months at the bowling green (behind the village hall.) I have been informed that sadly member numbers are down this year and as such the club is beginning to struggle. It would be a shame if we lost this club in the village. They are on the look out for new members to go along for fun and friend-ship. Have you been thinking of joining for a while, would you like to see what it is all about and have a try? No experience necessary. No one too old or too young!! Everyone welcome.

THE PLOUGH GOLF SOCIETY Open to all and anyone can join. Playing on the last Fri-day of the month. Contact Adam 86 or 07895 483108 BOOK CLUB The book club meets every six weeks or so. Members read and discuss the books. It’s very informal and a great way of coming across new authors. However, as we meet in each other’s houses, there is a limit on numbers. The current one is full but there is a waiting list. Or how about setting up another group? Contact Mikela 8 SWINDERBY PHONE BOX has been lovingly restored by Simon Longson. It is regu-larly decorated by villagers to celebrate certain times of year. Look out for the next decoration and get involved. The more the merrier.

CHOPS Central Heating Oil Purchasing Scheme is a simple organisation designed to save us all some money on our central heating oil. I collect orders about 6 times a year. On my buying day, I get the best price possible and advise everyone where the oil is coming from and the current price. The saving comes from the bulk delivery into the village which normally means at least one full tanker load and 25+ deliveries. Payment depends on the supplier, but the worst scenario is that they phone for a debit card prior to delivery (they all charge a premium for Credit Cards). I do not handle any payment and have no vested interest in any oil company. If you run out of oil between deliveries, you can make your own arrangements and I am not in the least bit offended. The whole enterprise is 100% above board and I make or gain nothing from running CHOPS (apart from a few headaches usually related to deliveries!) If you want to 'join' just let me have name, address and post code as well as your phone number and I will add you to my list. Please note the minimum oil delivery is 500 litres (as designated by the oil suppliers). You will find forward delivery dates and other information in the Linkup. Call David Gardiner

NOTES FROM A SMALL PARISH - JULY 2018 What, it's August already. Where is this year going? It seems like only yesterday when.... Ah well, better get back to the report.

Public Forum There were no members of the public present so we jumped straight to the Community Lincs Senior Rural Officer. She gave a short brief about Neighbourhood Planning explaining that they enable local communities to have greater influence over changes and developments in their villages and neighbourhoods and are a way of enabling local communities to influence the planning of the area in which they live and work. Planning works on three tiers, 1. National, 2. Strategic (i.e. County or District level which in our case is the Central Lincolnshire Local Plan) and 3. Neighbourhood Planning. There are currently 6 completed (called MADE) and 9 submitted (called emerging) neighbourhood plans on the NKDC neighbourhood plans site. The problems with neighbourhood planning is that it takes a lot of time and a lot of money. Normally it takes about 12-18 months to formulate a plan although one village plan took almost four years. If you have no-one on your parish council that has done this sort of thing before, the costs come from hiring a consultancy firm. However, as the government are looking to devolve power down to local levels, there is £22.25 million funding available with each PC able to unlock £9000 each of this funding in stages. (Isn't it funny that they have a £22.25 million funding for this but then say councils are short of money?) Anyway, the long and short of it is, all the members of the PC have been given a questionnaire to complete individually, this prevents us making a collective decision where one party may influence another. The questionnaires will be collected and the answers will be presented at the next meeting. The result of that will decide if we want to go ahead and start our own neighbourhood plan.

Plans to consider an emergency plan Unlike neighbourhood planning, this one is relatively straightforward as there are lots of examples of emergency plans around. We are going to contact LCC to obtain a template document and look to where we could adapt it. For example, we have a very low risk of flooding, however we do have (had) problems with sewage on Station Road so we can cherry-pick the risks that may affect us.

Villa Farm Animal Rendering Plant You may remember that at the end of the last meeting we wanted to know the date of the planning meeting and the procedure during the meeting, i.e. who could attend, who could speak etc., well we have the official line from LCC. As such there is no date set yet for a planning committee meeting as additional information was has been requested from the applicant. When the applicant has submitted the information needed, a further consultation period will follow, the responses all collated and then a date will be sent. However, this means that whilst all the to-ing and fro-ing are going on, if you haven't yet objected to the application, you can still make one. When the planning committee have a date they will let us know. When the meeting is convened they allow two speakers to make their presentations, one for the plan and one opposing it. In a case such as this where there is likely to be a lot of public interest, the planning committee encourage people to come together and nominate a spokesperson to represent their case. The places to speak at committee are allocated on a first come first served basis, but nobody can register to speak until the committee date is known. In the Parish Council's opinion, the best group to speak against the proposal is the Witham Valley Park Preservation Group and as such we will not be requesting to speak to the committee but we will let the WVPPG know the views of our parishioners.

Commemorations of the end of WW1 and the Suffrage movement The PC have

Page 13: COLLINGHAM SHOW & PLOUGHING MATCH 2018...COLLINGHAM SHOW & PLOUGHING MATCH 2018 Saturday 15th September -Begins 9am Larksfield, Newark Road, Collingham, NG23 7RD By kind permission

13

granted up to a maximum of £200 towards costs of the commemorations. In addition County Cllr Mike Thompson has suggested we contact the Armed Forces Covenant to see if there is any other funding available.

Plot of land opposite the crescent This is where the two bird seats used to live. The land registry has the current use listed as 1 grit bin and two seats. The PC has agreed that this is where the new history plaque would be best placed so we intend to request a change to the registry to remove the words 'grit bin' and insert 'history plaque'.

Bulpit Lane Whilst the majority of the larger potholes on Bulpit Lane have been filled there is still some work to be done. With that in mind we have been told by LCC Highways that parts of Bulpit Lane will be closed for approximately 9 days between the 20th of August and the 5th of October for 'in situ carriageway recycling works'. This means that parts of the carriageway will be dug up, crushed and relaid as a base for a new surface.

Some dates for your diary

The next Big Swinderby Litter Pick Sunday September 23rd Meet at the village hall at 10:00am and collect your bags, gloves, litter pickers and hi-vis vests. Dress appropriately for the weather and tea (and possibly cake) will be provided on completion. Now this takes place on the same day as the Ride to Save Lives so you may see one or two bikes whilst you are picking.

Ride to Save Lives Sunday September 23rd up to 500 motorbikes will be starting at the Newark showground and touring around villages in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire to raise money for the Air Ambulance. They should be getting to Swinderby via Newark Road, Collingham Road, High Street and Station Road by about 11:10-11:15am so get out and support them. There will however be a collection tin in The Plough if you miss them.

Next meetings The dates of the next meetings for your diaries are available on the PC website at http://parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Swinderby/ but for those not connected to the t'interweb they are, Mondays 3rd of September and the 1st of October. All meetings start at 7:30pm and are held in the small room at the village hall. As usual, all are welcome to attend.

CHOPS Report

I have just placed the order for the 24 August delivery – 36k litres @46.55p per litre + 5% VAT. The supplier is K9 Fuels and this is the first time they have supplied CHOPS.

The oil market has been up and down since I last reported. American pressure on countries to stop buying from Iran later this year, together with a Saudi cutback in production may lead to shortages and subsequent price increase. To balance that position, current oil stocks appear to be high, so who knows what the next few months may hold?

I have now changed my email address. The reason for this is that all the CHOPS emails get mixed in with all my other emails and at the time of ordering, it makes it quite difficult to sort through to ensure that no one if left out. Please ensure that you use this address on all future orders and communication. Thanks, David [email protected] 8 (yes there are 2s in the middle)
