Orphan Train Rider Research Database

Ancestry.com now has records to help with researching an Orphan Train rider. The information is from two volumes of work. The first volume covers 13,000 children who resided in the Catholic New York Foundling Hospital from 1870 to 1925. The second volume covers only about 5,000 of the estimated 30,000 orphans from the Children’s Aid Society. Names were extracted from enumerations conducted at the hospital: 1870 and 1880 federal censuses; the New York City Police Census of 1890; the federal censuses of 1900, 1910, and 1920; and the New York State censuses of 1905, 1915, and 1925. Orphans are arranged chronologically by census, and then alphabetically. Most will provide the individual's name, race, sex, age, and status (inmate versus caretaker).

https://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=61639 (Note: Free search but pd. subscription needed to see view) Not all will be listed either.

New York, Orphans Placed in the New York Foundling Hospital and Children's Aid Society, 1855-1925 UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2018.

Original data: Inskeep, Carolee. The Children's Aid Society of New York: An Index to the Federal, State, and Local Census Records of Its Lodging Houses (1855-1925).

The New York Foundling Hospital: An Index to the Federal, State, and Local Census Records [1870-1925).

Two related databases are the New York, Census of Inmates in Almshouses & Poorhouses, 1830-1920 and the New York Hebrew Orphan Asylum records from 1860 to 1934.
