ANNUAL YEAR END REPORT

CLC’s band and music program had another successful year. In addition to performing a few concerts locally they also had a band trip to Minneapolis and put on the musical, High School Musical.

This year we held our fifth Annual Photo Gala of Excellence, featuring our photography, fashion and visual art students. It was another huge success and showcased student creativity and talent.

Or school sports programs continue to build on the levels of success we have seen in the past few years. The CLC girls soccer team won the zone championship and finished fourth at the Provincial Championship; the varsity girls’ basketball team won the zone championship and finished fourth in the Provincial Championship; the boys’ golf team won the zone championship; and, the CLC track team had over 20 athletes qualify for the MHSAA Provincial Track and Field Championships! All this success speaks to the level of commitment by the students and the staff that support the students in the other half of education.

Over the course of the school year, students have participated in several learning opportunities outside of the class that support growth and awareness in social justice issues, both locally and abroad, as well as, French language opportunities, leadership development skills, peer support, etc. Some of these activities include (to name a few): Festival Théâtre Jeunesse Fifth Annual Photo Gala of Excellence Terry Fox Run Peer Support Programs: Aboriginal Youth Internship Program Day of Pink Healthy Relationships Several Musical Concerts and Performances Evening of the Arts Tutoring Mental Health Awareness Day Sharing Circle Peer Helpers Several hosted sports tournaments GSA Conference RespectEd Brandon Jazz Festival for both Band and Choir TJ’s Gift Presentation Year 6 of CLC GSA group Xello—Career Planning Drug Awareness presentations Concours d’art oratoire CLC Social Justice raising funds for various charities

As students have taken part in these wonderful and exciting educational opportunities, they have gained experience to support learning to create socially responsible citizens.

Our Mission To provide a safe, positive, inclusive learning environment incorporating the unique qualities and skills of our students, parents, and staff, while exploring and celebrating the cultural diversity of our community, thus empowering our students to become productive, fulfilled citizens.

CLC School Plan l Culture and School Community Increase Language Proficiency

With a determined focus on increasing the amount of oral French within school, and creating authentic opportunities outside the school, our students have been given many opportunities to use French in a variety of settings. Staff development continues to focus on building academic vocabulary en Français.

Other strategies to support language proficiency include providing a wider choice of independent reading material, more small group collaboration, explicitly teaching study skills, reading strategies, vocabulary, and visuals such as word/vocabulary walls.

Improving Teaching Effectiveness and Learning Experiences

CLC teachers have been working together to learn different ways/strategies they can use to incorporate more accountable talk and writing to learn opportunities in their daily lesson planning and implementation. We are already noticing our students are thinking more critically and have a deeper understanding of the content they are learning.

Nine teachers, including our student support team, participated in reading apprenticeship this year. Reading apprenticeship is a framework for teaching literacy in disciplinary settings. These teachers participated in the provincial open institute to learn the foundation of reading apprenticeship. To continue their learning, the teachers also participated in collaborative learning days with other teachers in reading apprenticeship in our division. As well, teachers have school-based meetings to connect, reflect and learn with their colleagues. Through these learning days, teachers had opportunities to share what they have tried, learn more deeply about disciplinary reading, and plan units / lessons with their colleagues. The framework we are continuing to explore includes personal, social, cognitive, and knowledge-building dimensions all surrounding metacognition (thinking about their thinking). Teaching literacy in this way has helped students learn to read like a mathematician, like an historian, like a scientist, etc. Next year we will have four more CLC staff participating in apprenticeship.

As part of our professional learning this year CLC teachers had the opportunity to participate in sessions around critical thinking. This connected with Reading Apprenticeship and helped to support our learning intentions in deepening comprehension and metacognition through accountable talk opportunities and in writing.

Improving Teaching Effectiveness and Learning Experiences (continued) Professional learning of teaching staff was again focused on making improvements on

instructional methodologies that impact positively on student learning. School staff worked with students, both in and out of the classroom, to facilitate and to support the development of writing skills and accountable talk to deepen student understanding.

CLC’s Instructional Coaches (IC) worked directly, and collaboratively, with teachers,

supporting, and learning alongside the classroom teacher. This collaboration has proven to have an impact on learning, and specifically impacting improvements in stu-dent reading. Some of the learning was visibly evidenced by:

Students able to identify the learning goals and success criteria for the lesson/activity they are engaged in.

Students can identify strategies that they can use to meet their learning goals.

Staff professional learning sessions centered around critical thinking and Reading Apprenticeship.

Rich real life learning experiences relative to student interests in all subject areas.

Teachers using strategies in the classroom that support the development of academic vocabulary.

Professional learning days used to work collaboratively through co-planning, focusing on common goals, and improvement in teaching methodologies.

Visible evidence in the classroom include: anchor charts, word walls, clearly identified learning outcomes, clearly identified success criteria, descriptive feedback and assessment driving instruction.

School Culture and School Community

Many of our students engaged in Social Justice action to better the lives of others. We also have Sharing Circle and Fire Spirit groups related to aboriginal issues.

Several of our students were involved with workplaces in our community and beyond. These students, whether in Apprenticeships, work experience practicums through Lifeskills, or the Aboriginal Youth Internship Program, gained valuable skills in an environment outside the school. We would like to thank all of our partners in this endeavour.

Several Student Leadership activities were offered throughout the school year to provide students opportunities to gain leadership skills, as well as, provide all students with opportunities to build upon a positive school culture.

The number of students receiving high school credits through the CLC Apprenticeship

program this year totals 34. Number of graduates for June 2019 =

119.
