Our MissionCollege Visions empowers low-income and first-generation

college-bound students to realize the promise of higher

education by providing advising and resources to promote

college enrollment, persistence, and graduation. College

Visions advances equal access to educational opportunities

in historically under-served communities.

Page 3: College Visions 2014 Annual Report

The future is always an unknown. When College Visions began,

we didn’t know what the next decade held.

With the amazing support of friends like you, I founded College

Visions in 2004 with 10 students and a borrowed desk. It was a

humble beginning and the premise was simple: with personalized,

high quality coaching, low-income students will make it to college

and earn a degree. But it wasn’t easy.

We were up against structural inequality, decades of apathy, and harmful myths about the

deep disparities in college attainment.

Back in 2004, you and I knew better. The future was an opportunity to empower

disadvantaged young people to graduate from college. Together we’ve changed the narrative

and built something beautiful.

Because of you, in 2009… College Visions launched the Kolajo Paul Afolabi College Success

Program, the first community-based college completion initiative in the state. Your generosity

now extends to support young people to persist through college all the way to graduation.

Because of you, in 2010… College Visions moved into a beautiful new teen-friendly,

technology-rich 1,600 square foot office in the heart of Downtown. Have you visited?

Because of you, in 2014… 325 College Visions students are on the path to a college

degree. You know the need for College Visions is great, so you’ve helped us grow every

single year.

Because of you, there are now 140 College Visions college graduates who are

bankers, educators, engineers, designers, lawyers, nurses, science researchers, social workers,

and even college advisors. Think about the impact you’ve had on our students, their families,

the RI economy, and beyond. It’s profound.

The future is still an unknown. But momentum is on our side, and College Visions has big

aspirations as we enter our second decade.

Will you be there for the next decade of CV students? With your help, CV will reach

500 students annually by 2018 and celebrate our 500th college graduate by 2020. These goals

will only happen with you on our side. So I am asking you to step into the unknown and join

us for another decade.

Thank you!

Simon Moore, Founder and Executive Director

Letter from our DIRECTOR

Closing the gapIn 2012, 88% of high school seniors in Providence planned to attend college, but only 38%

enrolled right after graduation.* our goal is to close the gap by guiding 12th graders through

the critical but often confusing college admissions process. each year we work closely with 65

students to achieve impressive results. In 2014, 100% of students received an offer of admission

and 97% enrolled in college immediately after high school. *Statistic compiled by RI Kids Count

How do we do it? 1-On-1 AdmIssIOns AdVIsIng

Bi-weekly meetings with staff advisors enable students to develop polished application materials

and navigate the admissions process. In 2014, CV 12th graders submitted an average of 7.5

college applications.

explOrIng OpTIOns

CV enables prospective students to visit colleges across the northeast and beyond. Also, many

colleges hold info sessions and admission interviews at CV. In 2014, 57% of CV 12th graders

participated in at least one campus visit and 56% attended an info session at CV.

getting to college is a family endeavor, and CV engages parents and guardians through

individual meetings, an open house, and various planning workshops. In 2014, 87% of families

participated in at least one session with CV staff.

Since I was about eleven years old, I have wanted to be a nurse.

I felt overwhelmed by the college process—it can be scary for someone without financial security

and a good support system. I am not sure if I would be where I am today without College Visions.

I had to put in the time and effort to be successful in school, but College Visions has been an

amazing support system over the last five years and I will be forever grateful.

The experiences and skills I gained through the help of CV allowed me to successfully complete

my degree in nursing. Having people that were knowledgeable and concerned with my struggles,

made the college experience that much better!

I graduated in January 2014, then completed and passed my licensure exams to become a

registered nurse.

“CV gave me the opportunity to explore my different

options and ultimately gave me choices on where I

wanted to attend college.”

Getting in is great. But getting through is the goal. The Pell Institute reports a mere 11% of

low-income, first-generation students who enter college earn a bachelor’s within 6 years. In

response, College Visions launched the College Success Program in 2009. A unique initiative in

Rhode Island, the College Success Program is now supporting 260 students to persist through

college from enrollment all the way to graduation. As a result, our students earn bachelor’s

degrees at more than 5 times the national rate.

How do we do it?1-On-1 suCCess COACHIng

Advisors provide college students with individualized coaching sessions at College Visions, over

the phone, and online. Many sessions also happen on campus at schools like Brandeis university,

guilford College, McDaniel College, Rhode Island College and university of Rhode Island. Success

coaching empowers students to solve problems, take advantage of campus-based resources and

stay on track to graduate.

AFFOrdABIlITy

The College Success Program ensures that students have the financial support they need

throughout college. Advisors assist college students with completing the fAfSA, creating

budgets, and much more. Additionally, CV provides small emergency grants to assist students

with critical needs like books, transportation, and even eyeglasses.

TrAnsFer COACHIng

The majority of CV students who enroll in community college aspire to earn a bachelor’s degree.

Advisors assist them in selecting transferrable courses and navigating the transfer admission

process. As a result, CV students have transferred from Community College of Rhode Island to

schools such as Mt. Holyoke College, McDaniel College, Rhode Island College, Rhode Island

School of Design and university of Rhode Island.

why we support College visions

“As a first generation college student from a working class immigrant

family, I absolutely know how important it is to be prepared for what lies

ahead in college, academically and socially. I was not well prepared; the

first years at college were extremely challenging to me, and not always in

a good way! College was a real shock, in fact. I’m a university professor

now and I want to see more first generation students in my classrooms.

I know College Visions is contributing to this in a big way, getting young

people ready for college and helping them get into college.”
